I wanted to outline some things that I have been thinking about the past day, and why I think the New Orleans game will be a win. Regardless of the outcome. I am not talking about a win in the column, but more of a mental standpoint.
The Texans find themselves in familiar waters coming into the third game of the season. 2 wins and 0 losses and on top of the AFC South. The one glaring difference, is Wade Phillips and the defenses mindset. At this time last year, the Texans were one of the worst defenses. Of course, we thought with time they would get better. Turns out after a 6-10 season, we were wrong. After nearly pitching a shutout against Indianapolis, and keeping the Dolphins from getting a TD on multiple red zone attempts. The defense is full of confidence heading into a game where the Saints can put up numbers, and in a hurry. I think, the offense is the ones that will have to show up Sunday. This game is going to be close, and a blow out for either side is not coming. Whether the score is 7 to 3 or 45 to 38, the defense is going to keep us in this game, and the offense will have to capitalize off every turnover the defense EARNS. If it does turn out to be the latter. Then there is no reason to panic, even if Brees puts up 500 yards. There is going to be shoot outs in the course of a season, and there is going to be defensive struggles. (This can be illustrated by the Green Bay Packers last year.) I think this game is going to come down to, not talent on the rosters, but how each team reacts to momentum shifts. Thoughts?

I think we have to approach this game similarly to how we would approach a Manning led Indy game in recent games. I don't think it's any secret that as Brees goes, so does the Saints. So far, I've not seen where Brees has been challenged much, if at all in the pocket.
Despite getting sacked 4 times over 2 games, he's still yet to turn the ball over... This against the likes of the packers and bears, who I have much respect for defensively. We HAVE to find a way to pressure him all game long. This may lend to Ingram getting more than his share of yards, but I'd much rather the latter. Compared to Miami's D, the Saints, while still no pushover, shouldn't be as challenging for the Texans to move on. If we can keep this game on the ground, I like our chances. |

The offensive line has to do a much better job in the second and third quarters though.

I think the Texans can run on the Saints and that it's vital that we do that. Long, time consuming drives that end in touchdowns are the real key to this. New Orleans is outstanding and they can crank out a lot of yards/score a lot of points. You play them the way you play the Colts with Manning I think. You try to keep Brees on the bench as long as possible and you do everything in your power to avoid falling behind because if you do you're dead. The moment you abandon the run they have you and Gregg Williams sets the hounds loose on you. We can't protect well enough to trot Matt Schaub back there forty times.
Ben Tate's gotta have a third straight big game. Our defense has to keep improving.

The Superdome is a tough venue to play at. I don't expect to win this week, but I will be happy if they do. The Saints with Brees are always a formidable team.

They have given up the same 4 sacks we have.

You are right with the running, the saints really struggle to contain the run up the middle. This helps us not only gain yardage, but also control the clock. It is also clear that Harper can't cover at all. If we can spread them wide and try to get Harper isolated on Casey or Daniels, they could make a big play. I have also seen them bite quite a bit on play action, so that will be nice for us.
The thing we have to watch out for is the big play. NO loves to take the slot receiver and send them deep, especially with Henderson. He is the fastest guy on their team, and if they put him in the slot, they almost always send him deep. If we can keep them to a short passing game and running the ball I will be happy. I think we have a good chance if we just have to out rush them.

The Saints are gonna take their 2 jumbo guards that average 'bout 330 and run the ball down the throat of our undersized DLine featuring NTs that average 'bout 295-300 lbs. Trust me Texans fans, it ain't gonna be pretty
and I'd just soon be a realist and hold out CB Joseph and other key injured players to get ready for Pittsburg the next week in Reliant Stadium which is a game that's definitely more winnable. |

They're all winnable. I don't think the Texans need to concede anything yet. Sure they can run on us. So could the Dolphins. I don't care if the Saints run up 150 yards on the ground against us as long as we can do the same or better to them. This is admittedly most likely a loss. It isn't a foregone conclusion though.

I'm still cautiously optimistic. Hoping for a big W! If we pull this game off, then I expect us to be 6-0 after week 6. The Ravens lost to the freaking Titans for crying out loud. Pittsburg has already shown their vulnerability. The Raiders got ousted by the Bills. I'm thinking things seem to be falling into place for us. I believe a famous coach said won time, "Being a champ takes a whole lot of skill, but a lot more luck." If they didn't, they should have.

The Steelers aren't as bad as they looked against Baltimore. Baltimore isn't as bad as they looked against Tennessee. Tennessee just happened to catch the Ravens at the right time. They aren't as good as they looked in that game either. There's not a team in the next four weeks that can't beat us. We could just as easily be 2-4 as 6-0 if we think we have any of these teams number. Hopefully our defense keeps improving as they get more experience in the system under their belts and we get a few breaks along the way. I'd like to be 4-2 (but 5-1 would be better) when we play our next division game (Tennessee).

Those sacks have come with 33 more pass attempts for them. I do like the matchup with their defense better than the Dolphins though, I like our chances of protecting Schaub.

Just like Indy, the best defense against the Saints is to keep Brees on the bench with long drives. Run it down their throats and wear out that Saints defense, which could greatly benefit the Texans in the 4th quarter when they need to make a game-winning drive. I think it will be a close game, and might even come down to who has the ball last. |

I'm going to really enjoy the next four Sundays, because we are going to find out a lot about our team. In the next four weeks we have the Saints, Steelers, Raiders, and Ravens. Three out of our next four are against what must be considered top flight teams, the Raiders are well....who knows what the Raiders are?
