i can't believe the NFL this year, we only get one shot to make it to the play-offs! how fair is that, i mean of course a win counts towards something in a sixteen game season, but to make it the ONLY chance our team and player's have at accomplishing anything is ridiculous! of course we should fire caper/palmer/CC, they didn't petition or fight for more games to give the texan's a chance to redeem themselves. all can say is BURGERFICKLE and BAHUMBUG with the way this season turned out. on the brightside though, at least we get that high draft pick everyone has been counting on/coveting. and here's to hoping the season gets extended to at least two games next year so we have the shot at a .500 season and a possible wild card play-off.

I'll give you one game doesn't make a season battle cry. But are you aware that this team put up a whole 120 yards and every single player that was there last year is here this year. By the way, J.P. Losman had a broke leg and missed the whole season. We made this bum look like the second coming of Joe Montana (ok, maybe not that extreme but you get my point). The penalties, miscommunication, poor tackling, drops, bad reads, poor coaching/game planning. They looked every bit of an expansion team. No strike that, they looked worse than an expansion team. They opened the can of quit on the first game of the season. Terrible sign. You can not try to spin this into something positive. For me to be positive about this season would mean a trip to Detroit. And since we don't have the Lions on the schedule, I think you know what I mean.

i guess i feel like since those are all correctable, then we shouldn't let the sky hit us on it's perceived path down to earth. watching the texan's play this poorly sucked BIG TIME, but since we have no control/influence on the team correcting these mistakes/miscues then i see no reason to get all "angry troll/ belligerent fan" like the board always gets after any loss, especially a loss like this. it takes away from the best things about this place: the intelligent football talk/very active mods/and supporting our team.

we all know that the team is capable of much more than they showed, and since none of us saw this train wreck coming, what makes anyone think we can see a great game on the horizon?

funny how we are trying to get so far away from that stigma, when the 49'rs and dolphins both had much worse years than we did last year and no one claimed they looked expansion-esq. i think it's impatient fans who grew up with microwave's and video games (yeah, i did too...but i've never called for heads to roll either) that think just because we have football in houston, we should be making our lombardi run in the fourth year of our existence. IMO we have grown steadily farther away from our expansion origins, but how far away is four years removed really? i agree with the idea that it will take closer to 8 years for us to be an established team built solely on the front offices drafts and FA moves. we won't have been just an expansion team throughout that time, but we won't have earned all our n00b lumps until then.

It's the lack of correcting those things which ARE correctable that frustrates the beginner, average and expert fan among us. These aren't NEW problems, they're OLD ones that have YET to be corrected.

Whoooah there! A LOT of us saw THIS one coming! We were beaten down by the hordes who claimed that our pitiful 1st team play in Pre-Season wouldn't carry over into the "real" games. This is the reality of our piss-poor preseason prep. From cutting the only guys we had returning kickoffs (thereby trying unproven commodities AND risking BOTH our RBs), to lousy decision making, to boneheaded penalties, we pretty much played EXACTLY like we had prepared in the Pre-Season.

Patience has nothing to do with it. Well.. I take that back. Im patient enough to sit through 5 more years of growth if thats what it takes to become a good team.

But the key word there is GROWTH. Our offense hasnt looked that bad since 2002. Even in our WORST LOSSES the last two seasons, our offense has not looked so inept. We havent taken a step backwards, we took a LEAP backwards.

We designed this offense to get the ball out of Carr's hands quickly so that he avoids getting pummeled again. He got sacked 4 times.

We designed this offense to create mismatches with Johnson and get the ball into his hands more. He had 2 receptions for 7 yards.

We designed this offense to run the ball effectively with Domanick Davis. He had 14 carries for 48 yards.

We designed this defense to have a better passrush and better coverage abilities from our inside linebackers. We got 1 sack and no real pressure.. and Buffalo's rookie QB picked our ILBs (and our CBs for that matter) apart.


This game was a complete failure in every phase of the game.. and this is the first time we have had no good excuse for it. We have always come out ready to play the first game of the season.

What bothers me isnt that we lost. Its that we showed NOTHING positive, we looked terrible no matter what we did, it was never even CLOSE.. we never even had a chance of coming back.. our only score came on a phantom unnecessary roughness penalty.

We were supposed to come out this season with something to prove. We were SUPPOSED to show that we have progressed to the point that you may actually mention our name and playoffs in the same sentence.. but we came out stale and confused. I just dont see how we can expect to make any strides this season (let alone the playoffs) when we cant even get fired up and prepared for the first game of the season.

I refuse to let the Texans become the Oilers.. or the Bengals.. or the Cardinals... or the Saints or Lions... You can tell a good team when you see one.. they go out there, not on "any given sunday" , but on "every freakin sunday" and play the game like they are supposed to. Win or lose, they do their thing and after 60 minutes you cant say "well they obviously didnt come to play". A good example is the Colts v. Ravens game tonight. The Ravens didnt score a single point till the 4th quarter, but at no point in the game did they look inept or beaten.

If we are going to avoid 20 years of wasted seasons.. then nip this problem in the bud now. Spend a little bit of money and get some coaches that you KNOW can make a difference.

When I say "you know can make a difference", just look at who we have. We have a collection of "second chancers". Our OC was the OC for a dismal Browns team. Our DC was the DC for the Colts.. one of the worst defenses in the league while he was there. Capers was a DC when we hired him because he had been fired from Carolina after they got their 10 minutes in the sun. All of these guys are failures that we took in. Im all for giving guys a second chance, but they have had it their chance and now its time to find a coaching staff that can win games.

McNair wants to be like the Steelers. He wants his coaching staff to stick around for years because that kind of "steadiness" makes for a good football team. But dont just take the first guy that walks through the door and make him your "franchise coach". If you want someone who we can keep around for decades.. then make SURE that it is someone who can take your team to where you want to go. Are YOU sure that capers is that guy? Im not.. matter of fact.. im pretty sure he isnt. And im DAMNED sure that Fangio and Palmer arent.

Fix the problem now so that we wont have to have this conversation for the next 4th of a century.

just like the colts 0-5 start had prepared the colts to bring the wood to the raven's 24-7 opening night. EXACTLY. RIIIIIGHT....pre-season was no direct indicator on our loss. hell, getting mollywhopped on opening day doesn't even mean you can't hold the lombardi later in the year (ie. patriots whupped by the bills, none the less, two years ago 31-0).

Hahahaha so from what you saw today? You think we got the stuff to go far this season? Jrock.... get real....

and no bottle-o-bud, i don't think we're "going far" in terms of a deep play-off run. i do think we will increase our win total again and i wouldn't put us past 9 wins right now. a few more shellacking's and offensive ineptitude might suggest i adjust my prediction a bit....fluke/rut until proven otherwise

i guess in the simplest terms, the progress made until this point can't be forgotten about because of ONE GAME, no matter how poorly played it was. every team has a dud in them, we just dropped our bomb on the first game of the season and not the first round of the play-offs. keep in mind that if this continues over a 2-3 game stretch, and we let pittsburgh or cincy or tennessee look as good as we let the bills look, then i would say we are "taking on" proverbial water. ONE GAME isn't hitting the iceberg, it's spotting it on radar and the plan of action that ensues. now we'll get to see how capers/palmer plan to avoid such a catastrophe.

and if i was even close to being a part of the captain's crew, enough to where i had any responsibility in keeping the SS Texan away from said iceberg, going down with the ship is more admirable than freaking out and jumping off the side. but since i am the equivalent of a bystander (not directly involved) in the ship's demise, i would read the report in the paper from land and go "what a shame, such a magnificent ship piloted to it's doom, i was really pulling for it to make it" and then look for the next incarnation of the SS Texan to root for and wish it clear skies and godspeed.

Since you literally ASKED for it, your Colts / Texans pre-season comparison isn't valid FACTUALLY. I mentioned nothing about pre-season win/loss record for good reason, it doesn't matter! What DOES matter (and what I said) was that our FIRST TEAM stunk up the place. Those guys at the TOP of the depth chart didn't perform worth a flip, and continued that lousy play right into the regular season. Our QB rating actually went up from his last two pre-season games, but that was more a product of playing four quarters and accumulating a few more yards.

If you can show me that Peyton and the 1st-team Colts Offense was equivalently piss-poor to the Texans in Pre-Season, but managed to "turn it around" in the regular season, I'll consider myself "spanked" and be done with it. Deal?
