The Houston Texans select Earl Thomas DB University of Texas
The ability of Thomas to be a cover safety and/or potential even play corner makes him the pick here. The need is a defensive back with ball skills from either position. If Dunta Robinson goes via free agency then Thomas has the cover skills to play CB. If Robinson returns, then the okay, but not special Eugene Wilson becomes quality veteran depth. Earl's weakness is against the run, but paired with Pollard he would not be placed in a run support situation very often.

The Houston Texans select Ryan Mathews RB Fresno State
This draft falls very well for the Texans. Matthews has a good size ratio and a running style the seems perfect for zone blocking. Assuming he picks the pss protection game. No reason, he should not be able at minimium split time with the back already with the Texans, but probably would be the favorite for a starting/lead back spot

I would like those two picks... but overall does not seem a very realistic draft.

Thomas is best FS to fall to us but I like Kyle Wilson as a pure CB better.

I will particiapate in one more of these on another board in April. This site usually has a couple more during draft season that I may or may not be the Texans representative. When I am bored and have nothing to do I will post my results from a kffl.com group I have been mock GM with since either 2003 or 2004.

He was literally my other consideration at the spot, with CJ spiller as a wildcard BPA consideration. Pouncey crossed my mind there also.

An I really appreciate you doing so. I guess I was thrown off with the Redskins picking Berry. I dont think that will happen in any way, shape, or form and I had a jaundiced eye after that.

From your fingers to Rick Smith's draft card. I would kill for those two picks.

Solid picks on your part. My favs are Dan Williams out of Tennessee and Iupati out of Idaho, but both are gone by the time you pick. It would have been hard to pass up Spiller, but Thomas does fit a big need at FS/CB. I like the Mathews pick a lot.

Is he superman, no. But at 20 he is a solid pick. BTW Spiller is the only RB in this draft that I consider at 20. Adding Spiller to Slaton and Foster would give us a solid RB core. And then in the 2nd I would love for us to take Matthews, even if we take Spiller, if you don't want 2 RB this high, I go with Donovan Warren, CB, Michigan. Overall not a bad effort on your part |

I'm not a big Spiller fan. He just doesn't have the vision you look for, especially not in a one cut and go system. If there's not a hole 5 yards wide to run through he's always looking to bounce it outside or dance in the backfield.
I could take a flier on his athleticism in the second, but he is going to have to completely change his running style if he wants to be anything more than Reggie Bust 1.1 in the NFL.

Nice mock. don't you think with Ladainian cut the first priority for the Chargers would be the running back position ? And since Mathews is a local, they'd have him already pretty well scouted ?
I have no problem with Thomas. I'm thinking more and more that Iupati is going off the board to the niners with their sixteen. And I don't believe Mathews will fall that far.

I love it. Couldnt have done a better job myself.
Only other options you had were Donovan Warren or Perrish Cox in the 2nd. |
