2010 Draft Day Trades

This is something that will figure into all our Mock Drafts that we as fans have no control or knowledge over but will happen. The draft which is going prime time during the week, Thursday/Friday (will cost me vacation time) will be NFL football fans first taste of football since the Superbowl then not again until the pre-season. All this extra attention will add more pressure than ever for teams to impact rosters & create a buzz for their fan base. Also enhancing this years draft is a horde of underclassman trying to get in on possibly the last big pay day before a new barginning agreement can cap the rookie salaries. Making this the year to trade up & down depending on a teams needs (multiple/singular) for future considerations. Hence I expect Rick Smith & the Texans to be more aggressive from their past conservative approach.

Coveted prospects who could still be on the board around 20 who offer potential to pull big trade offers are IMO - C.J. Spiller, Dez Bryant, Sean Weatherspoon, Taylor Mays, Kyle Wilson, Patrick Robinson & Sergio Kindle to name a few. The idea would be to trade back not for future picks but for additional picks in this draft. If somehow the Texans could aquire an extra 2nd & 3rd giving Rick two picks in each rd. (without a 1st) I would give it serious consideration.

This could upgrade 4 positions w/new starters sooner rather than later. Kubiak needs to win now & become a legitimate playoff contender to satisfy this fan base that much we do know & the best way is to be aggressive in this years draft as I just don't see much depth to this years potential free agent market. Positions of importance are RB, FS, OL, CB, DL I know that's 5 but we're close. compare these two & tell me what you think?

Now that's a great idea! Trading out of the first round completely in order to get additional second rounders. Positively brilliant!

You'll find that there are alot of guys with a man crush on Toby Gerhart on this site. I'm with you though, not before the 3rd round.

As for Beerlovers trade and mock scenario, if we trade completely out of the 1st round I want two 2nd round picks not a 2nd and 3rd. I've done the math with two 2nd round picks from New England and it works out really close. This would give us three 2nd round picks and one 3rd round pick. As for your draft scenarios, I like the last one best. All four of those guys (Pouncey, Allen, Joseph, and Tate) are potential starters for the Texans. Doubt we trade again with the Titans & I don't trust the Patriots so the logical choice for me would be Tampa Bay. Texans #20 worth 850 points. Tampa Bay 35th 550 + 67th 255 = 805 throw in a 5th if you want worth around 40-45 points & there you have it. A player who they may covet but too early to take #3 overall is Jason Pierre-Paul, DE if he's still on the board @ #20 make the call & see what they offer?

I was thinking about New Englands #44=460 pts., and #53=370 pts. for a total of 830 pts., very close to our #20=850 pts.. Of course I know that trades don't always go by the trade value chart but I can always hope for the best.

They could be targeting Brian Price as a 3-4 DE, Sean Weatherspoon-OLB, possibly Roloando McClain-ILB, Brandon Graham-3-4 rush LB, maybe Dez Bryant-WR, Jermaine Gresham-TE, etc... I'm just thinking that the Patriots are a good team who has holes on defense and would probably like to make a run at the Super Bowl sometime soon before Tom Brady retires and they're forced to start rebuilding.

The Patriots have a 1st rounder at 22. If we pick at 20, the Bengals are all that separate the two. The Patriots may want to do this in case they feel like someone may not make it past the Bengals, or if they want two 1st rounders.

I could see the Patriots looking at Dan Williams, Spikes, Sergio Kindle, Patrick Robinson, Brandon Graham, Kyle Wilson.

I cant see the Pat's trading for an extra #1 - They tend to be a frugal franchise. I'd expect them to trade back for later picks rather than trading up and paying another player 1st round money.

The Pats have the upper hand in terms of picks, they've been feeding off trading down with weaker teams for years. The Hoodie is too smart to mess with & needs to be avoided at all costs teams who trade with them wind up losers, aka Oakland, Jacksonville, Tennessee, yes even Dallas & Philadelphia. With the picks they have another run is already in the making, barring injurys again. That is why Tampa Bay would be a more agreeable trading partner, plus those picks are at the top of ea. rd. usually where you find great value.

I would also point out the options are more plentiful if you expand your search to teams besides those who have TWO 2nds to flip....what about a 2nd & 3rd combined with a current player like Hillis from Denver?

Denver's 2nd #45 = 450 + 3rd #80 = 190 (640) plus Hillis value + 3rd (190) = 830 points vs the Texans 20th 850. If that is who you really wanted (a little weak for my taste) or straight up for Brandon Marshall (who is worth #20 but doubt Texans would be interested?).

I heard this on the radio yesterday and it really made me think hard about it. Would you trade this years #2 and next years #2 to the Rams for Steven Jackson? Two #2's is hard to swallow, but Jackson would solve our runninback woes and and vault us into being a dominant offense.

Gotta agree with Hou-Tex here .... While it might have paid off in the case of Schaub - thats a different & more important position - RB has such a short shelf life - Two 2nd's is just too steep a price to pay.

And its not very often teams get value in for a player via trade in the NFL.

Big frame to build, high motor can probably handle playing DE in 3-4

Then with three 2nd rd. picks they can address OLB (Alex Carrington) WR (Arrelious Benn) & OL (Vladimir Ducasse).

But I was really suprised last year when they passed on Connor Barwin too!

I agree that NE does not need a trade up. Draft too deep. I am looking at Dallas maybe, maybe interested in Taylor Mays at our pick. We hooked and reeled in Jerry once before on a QB, maybe we can do it again for a safety. Especially if we don't get greedy.

I'll take option #2. I really like Warren & believe we can pick up Morgan Burnett (FS/SS) in the 4th. Burnett would give us a similar player to Pollard at FS with real good size. It'd be real nice to have some size at the safety positions & still be able to pick up a potential starting CB in the same draft.

Joseph should give us the DT we've been needing to push the pocket.

New England picked up a Strong Safety last year early in the second round (34 overall). I'm not sure how well he is doing, but I kind of doubt they would spend two high picks in two years on the safety position.
