I know infantrycak & I discussed the reduction of penalties by the Texans from ’03 (121) to last year (106) in a previous thread. What we couldn’t find at the time was a breakdown of offensive vs. defensive penalties. I’ve gone back through the Texan gamebooks of the ’04 season to ascertain just who committed those infractions. The following list indicates 57 offensive penalties, 28 defensive penalties, and 23 penalties committed by special teams units. That’s 108 penalties, so I don’t know where the 2 penalty difference between my count & the NFL’s comes from. Here are the offenders & their crimes:
Chester Pitts (13) – False Start (8), Offensive Holding (3), Personal Foul (2) David Carr (11) – Intentional Grounding (5), Delay of Game (5), Personal Foul (1) Billy Miller (6) - Offensive Holding (3), False Start (2), Illegal Motion (1) Robaire Smith (5) – Offside (2), Encroachment (1), Face Mask – 5 yards (1), Personal Foul (1) Gary Walker (5) - Encroachment (2), Personal Foul (2), Offside (1) Milford Brown (4) - False Start (3), Offensive Holding (1) Mark Bruener (4) - False Start (2), Offensive Holding (2) Petey Faggins (3) - Pass Interference (1), Defensive Holding (1), Personal Foul (1) Aaron Glenn (3) – Pass Interference (2), Illegal Contact (1) Deshaun Polk (3) - Offensive Holding (2), Illegal Block (1) Todd Wade (3) - False Start (3) Seth Wand (3) - Offensive Holding (2), False Start (1) Zach Wiegert (3) - False Start (2), Tripping (1) Joe DeLoach (2) - Face Mask – 5 yards (1), Personal Foul (1) Jason Bell (2) – Punt Return Interference (1), Offensive Holding (1) Troy Evans (2) - Offensive Holding (1), Illegal Block (1) Jabar Gaffney (2) - Offensive Holding (1), Illegal Touch (1) Andre Johnson (2) - Offensive Holding (1), Offensive Pass Interference (1) Shantee Orr (2) - Illegal Block (1), Illegal kick (1) Antwan Peek (2) - Personal Foul (2) Bryan Pittman (2) - Offensive Holding (2) Dunta Robinson (2) - Pass Interference (2) Corey Sears (2) - Offensive Holding (1), Face Mask – 5 yards (1) Jonathan Wells (2) - Illegal Block (1), Personal Foul (1) Derick Armstrong (1) - Offensive Holding (1) Jason Babin (1) – Personal Foul (1) Jarrod Baxter (1) - False Start (1) Corey Bradford (1) - Personal Foul (1) Kris Brown (1) – Kickoff Out of Bounds (1) Marcus Coleman (1) - Illegal Block (1) Glenn Earl (1) - Personal Foul (1) Marlon McCree (1) - Personal Foul (1) Quincy Monk (1) - Offensive Holding (1) JJ Moses (1) - Personal Foul (1) Matt Murphy (1) - Offensive Holding (1) Seth Payne (1) - Tripping (1) Jamie Sharper (1) - Personal Foul (1) Marcus Spears (1) - False Start (1) Chad Stanley (1) - Delay of Game (1) Todd Washington (1) – Tripping (1) Fred Weary (1) - False Start (1) Kailee Wong (1) - Offside (1) Punt Team (1) – Illegal Formation (1) Punt Return Team – 12 Men on the Field (1)

I can handle most of those but the False Starts and Delay of Game penalties are inexcusable.

1st blush reaction, 11 penalties by the TE's is too many. Pitts really needs to improve on this--13 penalties by him alone is 4 more than the other four starting OLmen combined. Brown's total is horrible as well with 4 penalties in the limited time he played. Carr shouldn't have been tagged for that many intentional grounding calls--he has plenty of arm to get the ball past the line of scrimmage and played with it way too much last year. There were a couple more plays he could have been called for it, although there was also one blatant penalty where AJ went another direction and no call should have been made. Just address those areas and the Texans are a top 5 least penalized team. Sounds doable.
No frame of reference for this comment but it seems like the special teams total is too high. Lucky did you happen to note how many were when the Texans were on kick coverage and how many were while they were returning?

David Carr's personal foul penalty was the most exciting.

The O-Line with the exception of Pitts weren't penalized too much. There's still room for improvement, but its still helps us out alot if we don't hurt ourselves with stupid penalties.

The starting right tackle didn't get called for a hold the entire season? That's interesting.

Our two starting tackles are both in their 20s and totalled 6 penalties last year?!! Umm, I think we're in for good things with those two.
I relieve believe that a good amount of the OLine problems last year were a result of Palmer and his need to send 5 people out on pass routes every play and to have Carr take almost exclusively 7 step drops. That kind of predictability and exposure can only be overcome by superior talent and execution. We aren't there. However, I think reigning in Palmer this year will make a remarkable difference with pass blocking. |

The ones I like:
Kailee Wong (1) - Offside (1) Seth Payne (1) - Tripping (1) Jason Babin (1) – Personal Foul (1) Petey Faggins (3) - Pass Interference (1), Defensive Holding (1), Personal Foul (1) Dunta Robinson (2) - Pass Interference (2) ----These show that our defense is tough, Smart and crafty enough not to get caught doing what they do most of the time. The one I don't like: Antwan Peek (2) - Personal Foul (2) ---Peek played what 60 snaps all last season? and he got these many fouls? That's not good. Peek needs to learn to center his Chi or whatever crap is going to keep him from going Waterboy on a QB who has already thrown the ball. The one I don't get: JJ Moses (1) - Personal Foul (1) --What on earth could 5'6'', a buck and a quarter JJ Moses do to get a Personal Foul? Pants a Referee? Sing with Janet Jackson in the Superbowl? Arrange for Ashley Simpson to sing in the Orangebowl?

Great post - looking up and correlating these stats is a nice off-season exercise.

Is anyone else suprised how clean the o line plays? Besides Pitts all the other starters only had 3 each. Just wondering did Steve Mckinney not commit any penalties or is he not on the list?
