Foodservice Ups its Game

Ever since the first ticket was sold at a baseball game, foodservice was there. I don’t know what was sold. It could have been a hot dog or a beer since some things never change, but fans have been buying high priced, questionable quality fare at sporting events for a long time. That has been improving over the past few years at sporting venues all over the country, but the change is accelerating and foodservice and the fans are the winners. However, you know that you have hit the big time when the New York Times restaurant critic, Frank Bruni, weighs in on the subject with his opinion. And on the front page, no less!

Major league lineup at Citi FieldThe high rollers in the suites have had access to better food for years; now there is something for the rest of us. Concessions at many sporting venues around the country have been responding to fan requests for better and better food. And many times what they mean by better food is food from a place that they have heard of. Chili’s has a restaurant inside the American Airlines Center in Dallas. The Houston Texans at Reliant Stadium opened with many local restaurant venues, to the delight of fans. Famous Dave’s is now selling ribs at Coors Field in Denver.

Have the Texans "upped their game" on food service? maybe it was last year or year before that someone posted here about the food was not worth it (or maybe I am wrong)

Heck no...Reliant has not stepped it up. The food isn't bad...but it certainly is not great and don't even think about trying to buy something at halftime. The nimwits they have serving don't give a flying flip about being there and move slower than molasses.

The franchised food choices are decent.

They opened Reliant with Luthers, but no longer have them and the BBQ they have now is meh.

Papa Johns is okay.

Princes Hamburgers is an improvement over the old ones.

The best food options ever was at Compaq center before they moved to Toyota Center. They had mostly franchised food and it didn't taste worse than if you went to a restaurant. Various Pappas restaurants, Pizza Hut, Whataburger, etc.

The one and only time I've ever bought food at Reliant (open house 2002) it was from the Luthers inside the stadium. IT WAS HORRIBLE!!!!!

I've never bought food since and never will. Not just Reliant though, that's my rule for any stadium. I'll eat before or after.

And it's getting to where they can just keep their beer too. Went to MMP last weekend.....NINE FREAKING DOLLARS for a beer!!!! Screw that!

Every game I buy a Red River Dog and a coke. Sometimes the bun comes out all hard, but other than that, it's pretty good.

Hotdogs at the stadium, Pretzels, and nachos are the way to go. And the cokes and such are good

I went to a Dynamo game at Robertson stadium about a month ago. Those counter folks make the Reliant workers look like brain surgeons. I was honestly concerned about how the person serving me, actually got through each day of his life without harm.

Apparently there is a pecking order I'm not aware of, as far as the labor pool for staffing games.

Papa John's pizza if I need some carbs. Usually at the tailgates, my protein to carb ratio is off, thus needing some carbs to balance out the beverages for optimism energy.

The Prince's Hamburgers aren't bad, but usually I've eaten way too much red meat by then.

$5.50 for a pretzel. GAH.

in 70 games (or whatever), I can't recall eating at Reliant. It might have something to do with the previous 5 hours before the game starts, but generally I'm just not that hungry.

Normally that's true for me as well...but sometimes I want to get something for my daughter...or wife. Rarely do I need something for myself. If I go at halftime, sometimes its middle of the 3rd qurater before we get back to our seats which is absolutely unacceptable.

As far as the people behind the counter, aren't they volunteers from local schools as a fund raiser? I cut them a bit of slack. Just makes me laugh that if your order is $19.50 and you give them $20.50 they have a hard time with change!!!!

Yep... Load up before the game... By the way, it isn't rocket science to get a couple beers through that joke of a patdown... Not that I would ever try such a thing!

I always enjoyed the Luther's barbeque baked potato, but heard the ones from the new vendor aren't as good. I really like the Prince's hamburgers. Everything else is so-so except the baked funnel cakes leave a lot to be desired, fried please.

I like the barbeque beef sandwiches at Toyota Center, the chili dogs, and chicken strips, although I usually don't buy the four chicken strips unless I can share them.
