Default Big Lou's First Ever Texans Mock Draft

OK, so I figure if all the idiots out there that have thier own websites with Mock Drafts acting like they are the NFL Nostradameus, then I can post my sill thoughts. I think the Texans could end up with an OLB in the first, but I think a lot has to do with if they can trade down or not. Well here goes, don't laugh just comment if you feel like it!!!!

1. Clay Mathews
2. William Moore (I haven't given up on this guy yet)
3. DE (Johnson or Ayers or a sleeper like Sidbury)
4. Andre Brown (Maybe Glenn Coffee)
4. OG (Antoinne Caldwelle OG/C)
5. Pat White or Stephen McGee
6. RB (Speedster if we get someone with some bulk in the 4th)
7. WR or Blocking TE

1. Not bad.
2. Ehh I guess, but there are better choices at Safety. (I like Patrick Chung)
3. Maybe.
4a. I like Andre Brown more than Coffee. (I really like Rashad Jennings!)
4b. Sure.
5. No way Pat White is still available here.
6. With Slaton and Moats, I don't see the Texans drafting another fast RB.
7. Just go with BPA.

I'd be disappointed but not devastated with Matthews at 15. I don't see how Johnson or Ayers would make it to round 3 though I do like Sidbuy there. I'd love Stephen McGee in round 5 and I think it's possible. I don't like Andre Brown. I think there are a lot of really good RBs in this draft and would really like to get a couple of guys with more good tape. That being said, the basic framework of your draft looks good.

Also, I really think we will be trading down in the first. I think there will be enough interest in our spot to get at least a mediocre deal. Here are some candidates that may attract traders:

1. Sanchez- LZ assured his readers that he won't make it past 20. Since picks 17-19 all have QB issues, our spot looks good for someone wanting to secure him.

2. Speedy WR- Maclin, Bey, or one of the other guys may be sitting there and a number of teams might be in love with him. Many of the teams selecting in the 20s are looking for speed and playmaking ability from the WR position: Miami, NYJets, Baltimore, Tennessee, NYGIants, NO, Minnesota.

3. Moreno/Wells- one or both of the top backs could be sitting there. Again, a complimentary and explosive RB is something many of the playoff-caliber teams are looking for. A few of the teams could see a player like that as the guy to get them over the hump, so to speak: Arizona, Philadelphia, Baltimore, New England, SD?, Indy.

4. OT- if one of them slips. Look at last year's first round!

If that's who you like that's who you like. If you're targeting McGee might as well bite the bulilet and nab a TE with the fifth. Moore has worked out well recently. You're rolling the dice on him that he can heal up and be the Moore of '07, not of '08. Pick one in the sixth....pro days are rolling along.

I would not run screaming from the room but

1. Matthews is over reach for value at #15 but so will be everyone else. I'd like him better later in 1st or even 2nd round.
2. Moore had him on my mock in 1st round but he has fallen on boards. I also like Delmas in 2nd and Rashad Johnson in 3rd as FSs.
3. Brown, I did not follow but stats ok.
4. no comment
5. White who does he beat out? Our new back up QB FA? White is short for a QB. What receiver does he beat out? JJ who at least returns except when he fumbles?
6.RB check out Cedric Peerman5'10 216 4.45 combine run 40. May be here but I have him in round 5. I enjoyed your efforts.

I thought Moats looked fine. Especially against the Bears when they yanked Slaton. He had some nice runs.

Nice first draft, all the priorities seem good if not the players too.

Moats showed decent ability to make one cut and he GOOOOOOOOOES....I'd be interested to see he and Slaton burn a 40 yard dash side by side.

1. Matthews doesn't fit our 4-3 scheme, he's not a SLB, at best he's a 4-3 WLB but that's a stretch. He's never been in coverage.
2. He's looking better than he did at the end of the season but I'll pass, there are better SS available like Patrick Chung.
3. Any DE we draft will be a backup and I don't think we should be picking backups this early in the draft. We've got starter holes to fill.
4. I love both of these picks, Brown and Caldwell would be great for the Texans.
5. Since we signed Orlavsky I don't think we'll be going after a QB and White will be gone by this pick and I think it's to early for McGee.
6. No need for another RB but it's possible as long as they can play special teams.
7. We need a blocking TE.

Where did you get that from ? If they take him he'll be your primary back up for both OLB slots. So who in your mind would the will be covering if he is on the open side of the formation ? No one is going to be perfect at the fifteen.
I know your not suggesting that we move up an go get Curry....who is perfect. Everyone else has warts.

He's a quality backup, and a Slaton clone. In his runs he did have he looked great. Plus If I recall correctly, he's a good special teamer. Moats should make the team for next season.

Pretty much what you want in a third down back.

Matthews played the OLB/DE in college, he rushed the QB. He'd be good for a 3-4 team to play that position but he's never been a 4-3 SLB. He's never played in coverage of TE's or RB's, or taken on lead blockers to stuff the run on the strongside. I agree no one is perfect at #15, there just isn't any great value at that position this year. I'd love to have Curry, wouldn't that be sweet, but he'll be long gone by the time we pick. The second best SLB is Cushing, I'm not 100% sold on him either but at least he played the SLB position in college in a 3-4, he's played the strongside in pass coverage and run stuffing. In every player evaluation I've read and heard he's considered the second best SLB behind Curry, and coverage is what he's best at as well as stuffing the run. I know everyone has warts coming out of college unless your in the top 3. This years draft just doesn't have that many elite players but it has great depth of good players down to the 3rd and 4th rounds.

Honestly do you want to draft a backup player in the 1st round? We need starters in the first 3 rounds.

How could he have played OLB/DE and not taken on a lead blocker at some point?

Matthews is listed on Draftcountdown.com as an inch taller and 3 lbs. lighter than Cushing. Faster too. So I don't think size or speed is the issue between Cushing or Matthews.

Cushing is no playmaker in coverage either. Maybe he's got experience but he also has something else Matthews doesn't have: long injury report

Me too. I doubt Moats goes anywhere. Point one....he is a pro vet presence in the locker room. Point two he plays special teams ...well. Point three he's cap friendly. Point four....he is perfect for what he is....two guys are out and you 've got no one else.

and that is why....you go after one.....even though he isn't perfect.....with the fifteen. You do not gamble on something as fragile as our starting OLBs. What is it that you do not under stand ?...both guys are coming off an injury. Adibi missed eight gakes....Diles four. Your back ups are grey beards who are just that ,cap fiendly back ups. They try hard...work hard, but they are athletically limited.

He isn't in my estimation a back up player. What he is is a 4.65 guy who runs side line to side line....knows how to bull rush and defeat bigger line man....and can cover in space. I believe he beats out Adibi by October. They'll rotate him until they are sure....then make a move. He has a pass rush. If he gives us six....that would be fine. I mean if we're talking about a will here....the only one beter would be Curry.

Well Einstien he isn't going to play DE @ 240....in either scheme. Now is he ? At 4.65 he is one of he few guys on the board who has any hope of running with Chris Johnson. And although it is true that Adibi could...the whole point of the Mathews pick is you are never going to know which game(s) Adibi can and can't go. So would Mathews be worth the pick to you if you were certain he could help you sweep the titans ? Or would be able to run down MJD and make a sure tackle on the guy ? Just wanna know where your maddness ends at ? So you are perfectly fine passing up the two guys in the first who give us the best hope in the worst case OLB scenario and....taking a Coner Barwin.....and hope for the best. Or are you saying.....you're going to live with the injury history of the two starters and just hope for the best ? Draft a day two guy and groom him up for 2010 ?

Inquireing minds wish to know ?

Sounds to me like we've heard that tune before.....Pitts at LT, Okoye last year.....Ahmen Green last year. With our history and with the history of our two starters at OLB.... it's prety stupid not to back that up with the best player you can get your hands on....they didn't blow out the cap for
Carlos Danby.....here you are. What I saw in the Oakland game, the last thing they should want is one of the back ups currnetly on the roster chasing after MJD or Chris Johnson. I'd be happy with Barwin or Sidbury in the third round.....But I would never expect either one of them to come in and have sucess as a day one starter.. If that was the way things broke and Mathews was our starter....he would not only handle it . He would excell at it and make a veteran expendable. IMHO.

They must, get faster in the back seven...and also improve thier pass rush. That is key for this club. They are not moving Mario.....so that kils all of the 3-4 tweeners with a first step. They're not going to draft DBs....they have tied up time and cap already with who they've got. The only thing left which accompishes both goals..is draft a LB with pass rushing skills.....and rotate him in. You know of someone on the second day who can do both.....and be a starter day one....please do enlighten us all.

Default Re: Big Lou's First Ever Texans Mock Draft

1. Clay Mathews
2. William Moore (I haven't given up on this guy yet)
3. DE (Johnson or Ayers or a sleeper like Sidbury)
4. Andre Brown (Maybe Glenn Coffee)
4. OG (Antoinne Caldwelle OG/C)
5. Pat White or Stephen McGee
6. RB (Speedster if we get someone with some bulk in the 4th)
7. WR or Blocking TE[/quote]

I like takin william moore in the second (just because he had a bad year doesnt mean his whole career will be bad) especialy if he returns to his junior season form. I hear hes a firery player and u cant ever hav to many of those.

I would love Johnson or Ayers in the third although i doubt they will be there.

I like RB in the 4th although i like rashad jennings but idk wat round hes supposed to be taken.

It would be a dream come true if we got pat white. we could add a lil of the wild cat to our play book and he could play some reciever

In the first i would want to trade down and pick up a second (Giants they have 2) then we could take Johnson in the second who is who i realy want and possibly take alphonso smith or darius butler in the first.
