Super Mario's Mock w/ explanation

My last "mock" rubbed YTF the wrong way, so this time around it will be layed out as more of a "who I think the Texans should choose", where I think they will be available with an explanation to boot. No trades or movement.

Here is a current list of my top 14 prospects. They will no be available in this MOCK with the Texans first round pick.

In no oder (1Sam Bradford, 2Matthew Stafford, 3Chris Wells, 4Andre Smith, 5Michael Oher, 6Eugene Monroe, 7Michael Crabtree, 8Brian Orakpo, 9Michael Johnson, 10Rey Maualuga, 11Aaron Curry, 12Malcom Jenkins, 13Vonte Davis, 14Taylor Mays)

I feel our biggest needs are at safety, guard, center, defensive end, tail back and cornerback. I feel our strengths are linebacker, offensive tackle, receiver, and tight end.

Round 1: With the 15th pick in the 2009 NFL draft the Houston Texans select: William Moore, FS, Missouri

Note: I dont think the Texans are desperate enough to draft Duke Robinson this high to replace Mike Brisel even though most feel an upgrade could be helpful. I think a good guard will be available when we pick in the 2nd. I also feel like unless we get a shot at Vonte or Jenkins the Texans need to look elsewhere with the pick. The Texans take a 6'1" 230lbs ballhawking safety who can lay the wood and come up in run support. He will put up some good numbers in the combine and should be the 1st or 2nd safety selected in the 2009 draft.

Round 2: Andy Levitre, OG, Oregon State

Note: I want a OC, or OG to help up front and I feel we will get a shot at a good one here in the 2nd round with Max Unger, Jonathan Luigs and Andy Levitre possibly available. I feel that the interior of the offense is built with good players in the 2nd or 3rd rounds, and since we have missed out on our 2nd round pick for the past 4 years we need to use it here. Max can play multiple line positions and his attributes point towards a zone scheme.

Round 3: Max Unger, OC, Oregon

Note: Again I am taking an interior lineman. Max is built for a zone blocking scheme as he is more athletic than most, but not as strong and will need the zone offense to hide his weakness. I am not as high on him as some who have him in the top 1-2 rounds, but think a zone team will scoop him up in the 3rd.

Round 4: Andre Brown, RB, North Carolina Sate

Note: With literally no shot at Shonn Greene, Javon Ringer, Rashad Jennings and CJ Spiller, the Texans draft Andre Brown out of NC State. A big body 6'0" 228lbs back who can catch the ball out of the backfield. A skill the Texans are going to want their running backs to have.

Round 5: Roy Miller, DT, Texas

Note: Roy Miller was the dominant force when Orakpo was out for a few games. The D-line was still productive only because of Miller. Miller is great value in the 5th round and will add some great depth.

Round 6: Tim Jamison, DE, Michigan

Note: Tim Jamison was poised to be the next great Michigan defender, but had a disapointing start to his senior campaign. The defense came on late and was a good unit. Tim might be overshadowed enough by Brandon Graham to drop. Unless he has a stellar combine, he should be available late.

Round 7: David Johnson, QB, Tulsa

Note: Threw for over 3800 yards with 43 TD's and 18 picks. At 6'3" 220 has the size and had great arm strength for most of his season. Should be a good project QB. And we all know the Texans like late value QB's.

Texans need to always improve even in areas of strength, OL. but doubt Gibbs will request another high pick or get one, more help earmarked for new DC, defense will be prioity (personally love Duke with 1st pick, he's 100% certified starting Guard material) question is Moore the bpa or safety on the board? #15 is too high for him, Mays probably not. while I don't trust USC product or Pete Carrol, Rhodes may be the right mentor for Mays who has elite speed. if they sign off on Moore they can should trade down similar to last draft & add 3rd. rd. pick that would be

Oregon State/Oregon Beavers & Ducks are you crazy? J/K pretty funny actually if you know the two programs hate for each other, anyway those picks would probably finish the Texans line, love him or hate em for the next decade. again would expect Texans to address defense or possibly a Forte type RB to compliment the ground game.

loved watching that Carolina program, some nice defensive players like Safety Trimane Goddard 5-11 195 does not have eltie speed but does have a nose for the football. he would be a great 4th rd. pick.

developmental picks in latter rounds maybe yes maybe no, other than QB I feel they are addressed earlier, more sense of urgancy.

Yea I really like Goddard as well. He does a good job reading plays and jumping routes. I think he had 7 INTs this year?

Moore did not impress in Mizzou's bowl game.

I liked this. I like the layout and the setup. You did an awesome job.

As for the picks, Moore played around 220-225, but it is pretty much a concensus that he needs to play around 210-215 like his Jr. year. The 230lb S is Taylor Mays. Moore needs to work on his angles, and may not be value at 15. Solid enough pick at a need position though.

I don't think Unger will slip like that. He has major versitility, and some team will snatch him up. I don't want him on my team. I think he is too diverse. I want a guy that stands out at just his position, and didn't make a name for himself by being a jack of all trades.

I don't know much about the OG from OSU at this point, but I'm not too keen on taking a non-defensive player in the second round.

I like Johnson late.

The Texans could trade down to the bottom of the 1st and still possibly pick up Moore. He did not have a good year at all. To take him at 15 would be a reach. He'll be available in the 2nd imo.

You also have the Texans selecting four offensive players, with three of the first four picks going to that side of the ball. Uh..ok?! Offense isn't the problem. Sure, a few upgrades can be made a C and Guard and RB. But the focus of this draft should be on defense, defense, and more defense. Take a RB in the 4th and maybe an OL in the 6th or 7th. Rest of the draft should be devoted to defense.

I'd like to see the Texans select Mays if he's available. If not, take Orakpo, Brown, Maybin, Raji, or Cody.

I could live with this draft with the exception of William Moore in the 1st round. I think he'll fall to the 2nd round after having a disappointing year. I saw 3 of Missouri's games this year and he just disappeared. I like the Andre Brown pick but I doubt seriously that we pick 2 O-linemen in this draft and especially that early.

I also think that whoever the new DC is, he'll get at least the first 2-3 picks of the draft. Kubiak will want to start off the new DC with players of his choosing to fit his scheme and improve as fast as possible.

Ok first of all, you are assuming that people are going to forget his junior year, and that he wont do well in the combine. If William Moore is available after 25 then I will eat my words. But I doubt you would put any money on that.

I took BPA IMO trying to stay close to our needs if possible. I am not going to take a player for need. Thats when you draft the Babin's of the world. Besides, I want to upgrade the OL, not get depth.

Mays was already selected in the top 14 along with Orakpo. I assume Brown is Everette, and I think he will go 3-4 like YTF has said. Cody could be a possibility.

I disagree with that. He might get a high pick, but he doesnt deserve the whole draft. He has a stud DE & MLB. Good young OLB in Adibi, Diles and Bentley. Decent tackles. Decent corners. He needs a better safety, and maybe shore up the CB position. Even Richard Smith strung together some good defensive outtings at the end of the season with this group.

I think that Max Unger will go in the early to mid second round or might slip into the late first round. I don't know much about Andy Levitre but I do like the Miller and Jamieson pick. I might also suggest DT Taylor from Michigan as an UFA or Dorell Scott from Clemson in the later rounds (if he falls that low) who is a strong, space-eating DT with speed and agility to rush to the QB.

I think the new Defensive Coordinator will have a key role in some of these picks- not the final say big he'll have a big word. At the end of the day, the pick will probably still go to the BPA, slightly skewed to certain positions.

I think it depends what kind of scheme the new DC, Kubiak and Smith want us to use. If we get a DC that's incredibly gifted with the secondary and uses/needs a versatile safety- I'd expect we'd try and focus on finding one of those early (Mays could easily go to N.O. or Denver). Or depending on how this scheme goes- we may need a certain kind of LB. I think most positions/players are open right now until we figure who that DC is, what he's going to do with our defense and what our defense lacks with what he wants to do. He may want a LB that can blitz better than one that's good in coverage, He may see everette brown available and say he's too good to pass up, I can easily fit him into a defense consistently where another DC may think, nope he doesn't fit. I'm really interested in this.

As far as Center goes, I'm with YTF. I want a true bonafide Center. Not a decent center and decent guard (1 player). I don't know enough about centers to tell you who would be better than who for us. However, I will say that I think the more this OL plays together, the better they will become.

Roy Miller just made himself alot of money and shot up the draft. There will be little to no chance to get him in the 5th after that game. I am going to have to spend a 3rd to get him now.

Maybin is a rSO, meaning he is 3 years removed, and draft eligible. He is a little light, but I don't think he would go in the first round. I think he is a little bigger than that, but I think he has the frame to fill out. If you look at him, he doesn't looked maxed on his frame like Orakpo or Brown who may only be able to carry another 5-10lbs over their career.

The 2 best centers in this draft are Mack and Unger. Mack is a solid all around center that plays srtong and holds his ground really well. You wont see him getting pushed back into the QB. The general consensus is that he will be one of the top centers in the NFL in a very short time. Some might think I'm crazy but I wouldnt be mad if we took him at 15. He is more of a sure thing than Mays at this point. My realistic wish list at 15

And I would take them in that order.

Unger isnt going to blow anyone off the line but is awsome at pulling and getting to the second level. Also hes a very good cut blocker. Just has a knack for for it. He would be perfect for the zone blocking scheme. That and the fact that he could play Tackle in a pinch makes him worth a second rounder to me.

I would love to have either one of them.

He was very close to bad. He did not have a good game, would have been a higher pick had he come out last season.
