Default Here’s a surefire Hail Mary for the Jaguars

Can you think of a better image to sum up the Jacksonville Jaguars’ 2008 season than the center hiking the ball into his rear end and having an opposing player scoop up the fumble and trot in for a touchdown — on the first play of the game?

Priceless.

While local sports radio chatters on about why the Jaguars are such a disappointing team this season, let’s turn our concerns to the business side. Just what are the fiscal ramifications of a losing season for the Jags?

Well, first off, it’s going to be more difficult for the team to peddle the naming rights to Jacksonville Municipal Stadium. We’re going on two years now since Alltel Corp. chucked in the towel, and still we have no takers from Corporate America who want their name to grace our stadium by the St. Johns.

I have always been partial to the Google Bowl, but I guess we don’t have the high-tech cred to pull that off. How about the Kitty Litter Bowl? That works well, given how the team is playing.

What else comes with losing? T-shirt and jersey sales have to be suffering — how many Maurice Jones-Drew jerseys can you sell when the team has forgotten how to win in front of its hometown fans?

Season tickets? I’d rather be selling Hummers than Jaguars 2009 season tickets.

TV ratings? People have better things to do on a sunny November Sunday in Florida than spend three hours of their lives watching a Keystone Cops football team.

Sports bars? People like to eat and drink a lot in sports bars, and this team makes people ill. Not a good combination.

Shopping at the mall? The Jags’ lousy play could revive this fall Sunday afternoon pastime —if people had money to spend.

Which brings us to the critical timing issue. This, I bet, is what’s disturbing Wayne Weaver’s sleep, more than the millions he shelled out for wide receiver Jerry Porter.

Every team has its ups and downs, but why did the Jaguars have to collapse at precisely the same time as the economy? I know this isn’t true for everyone in Northeast Florida, but football tickets get purchased with discretionary income, which for a lot of people has evaporated.

What’s to be done? Only one possibility exists.

The Jags need to lose the rest of their games, somehow convince Tim Tebow to go pro after his junior year at Florida, and draft him. By whatever means necessary.

You have a better idea?
