Default Boo Birds?

I was reading the recap and PK from ESPN said fans were booing the team when they were only up 7 and the play calling from deep in their own territory wasn't to their liking.

Whats up with that?

A 3-0 team thats winning and we're getting booed?

I don't know when it happened, but it seems to happen way too often for my liking - Kubiak calls a draw play on 3rd and 15+ on our side of the field. I mean, does he have a super secret stash of tapes the rest of us never experienced where that play works? And so he keeps calling it? It's a give-up play, and everyone knows it. He just calls it to get a few yards to get some room for the punter. Tactically sound or not, it pisses off fans.

No idea if that was where he got booed. I don't remember any boos. But if there were any, that's my first bet on when/why they happened.

Well given the reaction on this board to our team, it wouldn't surprise me at all.

Maybe they have PTSD from too many bad seasons, I don't know.

You don't agree with a play call, you express frustration. We're all guilty of it. The fans did it in unison at one point. Not a big deal. Just like booing when we kneel at the end of the first half. It happens, whatever.

I think that was the reason why. As far as that play goes, I'm not a fan of it either. But it seems like every single team in the NFL runs a draw play in that situation as well. I've watched many games this year and when a team is in 3rd and very long, they'll run a draw.

Tin hat theory: college football is skewing NFL fans' logic. (Some) fans expect to score on every drive, put up 50 points, and gain 500 yards of offense. And if your team happens to be playing an inferior opponent, they had better win by 40 or more.

Miami game was totally different.

I didn't boo, but I shared their sentiment, the team looked flat & incompetent when those boos came out.

Yesterday, it wasn't the whole stadium. It was like it started & the boo birds understood their sentiments weren't as popular as they thought & it stopped pretty quick.

We (I was involved) bood the refs at least twice that I can remember. Martin's first down play, where they tried to rob us & the punt where the Titan touched the ball 7 yards ahead of where the refs originally spotted it.

My thoughts, if you really don't like the boo birds, go to the game & shut them up.

Your solution is for me to attend the game and attempt to quiet thousands of booing fans?

Give me a break, Houston fans look like entitled babies when they are booing their team the first game of the season barely into the 2nd quarter. That was downright embarrassing.

I didn't notice as much booing in yesterdays game but it does not surprise me in the least that there were Houston fans booing when we were up 14-7 and they didn't approve of not getting points on every single offensive possession. Especially after that team is already 3-0.

PK is still a gigantic bag of douche, but it's not out of line to make a comment about people booing their "first time in franchise history 3-0 and now 4-0 team".

And yes, I'll be at the Packers game trying to "shut them up" whatever that means. I take it to mean drink as much beer as possible but your definition may be different.

What sense would it make to run 4 wides when the defense knows you have to pass and have their dime package on the field and their pass rush specialists in the front 5?? Maybe you catch them selling out for the pass rush and pick up the 15... Orrrrr... maybe you're setting them up for something totally different in the second half when that down/distance situ comes up again.

Just a guess.

I'm not going to squabble with individual play calls when we're 4-0 and have been up by 20+ on everyone we've played so far.

Thats the bottom line .... The odds of converting that 3rd and a mile are slim. Rather give up on a drive than give up a safety , a possession and the field position associated with a free kick or a blocked punt for recovered for a TD.

The consequences of either a safety or a recovery for a TD can change the entire course of a game.

Safe plays in that situation are limited to draws and screens really .... And they do have the potential to be successful on occasion tho the odds are against it.

I don't remember any boos yesterday aimed at the team. I hate booing and it pisses me off, so I usually make note of them.

The only booing I remember was a punt that went out of bounds at the 12 and the ref's originally spotted inside the 10.

It was the Foster draw play and as stated already it was more of an "Awwwww!!!"

I felt it to because we went 3 and out and it felt like we had a number of plays that could have been more effective than conservative runs right into the hands of the defense. It felt like the Tacks coaches knew exactly what Kubes was going to call in that situation and Kubes stayed predictable.

I heard boos in reliant when I watched in shock as the Rosencopter unfolded before us. The only booing yesterday was the retarded spot by the ref.

PK quote on this, only part of an article:

Quote:
What I wonder: Boo whenever you like. But the Texans were still a 3-0 team with a seven-point lead early in the third quarter when the Reliant Stadium crowd was unsatisfied with play calling deep in Houston’s own end. It didn’t take long for Houston to find the plays to put the Titans away. So maybe a bit more patience would have been more appropriate?

Exactly. I have to explain this every week.

"WHY ARE THEY RUNNING THE BALL! WHY!?!?!"
"Umm...because it's 3rd and 11 on our own 5 yard line?"

Also I think Kubes has handled it well. One thing I am noticing against lesser opponents is very conservative playcalling. He knows that the only way we lose to the Titans or Jags is by beating ourselves. Against the Broncos though he aired it out. I'm expecting the same old conservative playcalling against the Jets since...their offense is not going to beat us, but if you give their offense short fields and turn over the ball then any team can beat you on any sunday.

This is why i love this forum. I am and will always be a diehard basketball fan and am a casual football fan. Post like these help me learn more about the game and why certain calls are made. Keep up the good work.

I'll buy this and I bet you we will see a much different look against the likes of GB, Baltimore and N.E. and to a lesser extent, Chicago and Detroit. I think Kubes has some tricks up his sleave he just won't expose until playoffs, plays he's probably used before, but hoping teams have long since forgotten about and maybe a few new gems. In my opinion, we have still been very vanilla against our first 4 opponents. TBH, I think Kubes would rather take an L against a team, then show a potential come back series of plays useful for a playoff type situation. We shall see.

Hey, 4-0 is great, but we really haven't played anyone yet. Although, I can imagine the 2010 Texans would be 2-2 right now and even the 2011 Texans might be looking at 3-1. I think we drop that game in Denver if it's not THIS year's team and I think the 2010 team drops it to the Titans once they brought it to within 7.

I love the focus and general TEAM attitude these guys have. No one complains about touches or how many downs they play, they just get it done. I freaking love this team and what they have built. Houston may not have the flashiest franchises, but they always build franchises you can be proud of.

We agree on the reasons behind those particular plays .... but I think the downfield shots Vs dink and dunk are more a product of what the defenses are doing .... particularly the depth of their safeties. When those safeties are playing up , those long plays are safe plays .... Very little risk of a turnover when they are in stride with a reciever. When they are playing back in a deep zone , they are able to make more plays on the ball sideline to sideline .... those deep throws become a bigger risk.

Jax played their safeties in another county .... and their LBers were at depth often too .... what we saw was the offense take advantage of that by pounding the ball on the ground and controling the clock.

Denver played their safeties up aggressively .... and they went deep often and with great result. Denver wanted to stop the run .... and paid for it.

The Tits were somewhere between the two , they took a downfield shot or two but the results werent what they were Vs Denver .... Schaub spread the ball underneath those safeties controlling the clock with a mix of runs and completions.
