Default 2010 Draft Day Trades

This is something that will figure into all our Mock Drafts that we as fans have no control or knowledge over but will happen. The draft which is going prime time during the week, Thursday/Friday (will cost me vacation time) will be NFL football fans first taste of football since the Superbowl then not again until the pre-season. All this extra attention will add more pressure than ever for teams to impact rosters & create a buzz for their fan base. Also enhancing this years draft is a horde of underclassman trying to get in on possibly the last big pay day before a new barginning agreement can cap the rookie salaries. Making this the year to trade up & down depending on a teams needs (multiple/singular) for future considerations. Hence I expect Rick Smith & the Texans to be more aggressive from their past conservative approach.

Coveted prospects who could still be on the board around 20 who offer potential to pull big trade offers are IMO - C.J. Spiller, Dez Bryant, Sean Weatherspoon, Taylor Mays, Kyle Wilson, Patrick Robinson & Sergio Kindle to name a few. The idea would be to trade back not for future picks but for additional picks in this draft. If somehow the Texans could aquire an extra 2nd & 3rd giving Rick two picks in each rd. (without a 1st) I would give it serious consideration.

This could upgrade 4 positions w/new starters sooner rather than later. Kubiak needs to win now & become a legitimate playoff contender to satisfy this fan base that much we do know & the best way is to be aggressive in this years draft as I just don't see much depth to this years potential free agent market. Positions of importance are RB, FS, OL, CB, DL I know that's 5 but we're close. compare these two & tell me what you think?

1st - Kyle Wilson, CB
2nd -Toby Gerhart, RB
3rd - Mike Johnson, LG
VS
2nd - Maurkice Pouncey, C
2nd - Toby Gerhart, RB
3rd - Donovan Warren, CB/FS
3rd - Linval Joseph, DT
OR
2nd - Maurkice Pouncey, C
2nd - Nate Allen, FS
3rd - Linval Joseph, DT
3rd - Ben Tate, RB

You really think Gerhart is second round material ? I dont think I'd take him before the third.

You'll find that there are alot of guys with a man crush on Toby Gerhart on this site. I'm with you though, not before the 3rd round.

As for Beerlovers trade and mock scenario, if we trade completely out of the 1st round I want two 2nd round picks not a 2nd and 3rd. I've done the math with two 2nd round picks from New England and it works out really close. This would give us three 2nd round picks and one 3rd round pick. As for your draft scenarios, I like the last one best. All four of those guys (Pouncey, Allen, Joseph, and Tate) are potential starters for the Texans. Also I'd love to get Pouncey but he'll go early in the 2nd round and we'd have to trade up to get him. How bout this with three 2nd round picks.

2nd Maurkice Pouncey-C/OG
2nd Nate Allen-FS
2nd Perish Cox-CB
3rd Ben Tate-RB

Awtysst, we've all had this idea.

of course, if the right player is there a franchise might trade two 2nd's but I'm being extra safe & realistic, since alot of teams could have the same agenda. here is a list of traded picks from last year carryover to this years draft, courtesy of http://www.gbnreport.com/trades.htm

Quote:
2010

1st round

Denver has a #1 from Chicago (QB Jay Cutler)
Seattle has a #1 from Denver (2009 draft trade)
San Francisco has a #1 from Carolina (2009 draft trade)

2nd round

Kansas City has a #2 from Atlanta (TE Tony Gonzales)
New England has a #2 from Jacksonville (2009 draft trade)
New England has a #2 from Tennessee (2009 draft trade)
Tampa Bay has a #2 pick from Chicago (DE Gaines Adams)

3rd round

Philadelpha has a #3 from Seattle (2009 draft trade)
Washington forfeits its #3 pick (DE Jeremy Jarmon taken at 2009 supplemental draft)

Oakland has a #3 from New England (DE Derrick Burgess)
Cleveland has a conditional #3 from the Jets (WR Braylon Edwards; could escalate to a #2 depending on how many passes Edwards catches this fall)

4th round

Philadelphia has a conditional #4 from the NY Jets (CB Lito Shephard could escalate to as high as a #2 depending on PT)

5th round

Philadelphia has a #5 from New Orleans (2009 draft trade)
Detroit has a #5 from Denver (2009 draft trade)
New England has a #5 from Dallas through Denver (DE Derrick Burgess/DT LeKevin Smith)

Cleveland has a #5 from the Jets (WR Braylon Edwards)
Cleveland has a #5 from Tampa Bay (TE Kellen Winslow)

St. Louis has a #5 from Philadelphia (LB Will Witherspoon)
Kansas City has a #5 from Carolina (DT Tank Tyler)
Tampa Bay has a #5 pick from New England (TE Alex Smith)
Kansas City has a #5 pick from Miami (QB Tyler Thigpen)

6th round

Miami has a #6 from Washington (DE Jason Taylor)
Carolina has a #6 from Oakland (2009 draft trade)
Philadelphia has a #6 from Indianapolis (2009 draft trade)
Cleveland has a #6 pick from Carolina (DT Louis Leonard)
Buffalo from Philadelphia (OT Jason Peters).
Houston has a conditional 6th from San Diego (DT Travis Johnson; could escalate to a #5 depending on PT)

7th round

New England has a #7 from Philadelphia (WR Greg Lewis)
Miami has a #7 from Kansas City (2009 draft trade)
St. Louis has a #7 from Atlanta (CB Tye Hill)
Detroit has a #7 from NY Jets (QB Kevin O'Connell)
Tampa Bay has a #7 pick from Jacksonville (QB Luke McCown)
Other/conditional

Miami has an undisclosed pick from Kansas City (OGs Andy Alleman and Ikechuku Ndukwe)
Tampa Bay has a conditional late-round pick from Baltimore (DE Marquis Douglas)
Doubt we trade again with the Titans & I don't trust the Patriots so the logical choice for me would be Tampa Bay. Texans #20 worth 850 points. Tampa Bay 35th 550 + 67th 255 = 805 throw in a 5th if you want worth around 40-45 points & there you have it. A player who they may covet but too early to take #3 overall is Jason Pierre-Paul, DE if he's still on the board @ #20 make the call & see what they offer?

I was thinking about New Englands #44=460 pts., and #53=370 pts. for a total of 830 pts., very close to our #20=850 pts.. Of course I know that trades don't always go by the trade value chart but I can always hope for the best.

Now that's a great idea! Trading out of the first round completely in order to get additional second rounders. Positively brilliant!

Its almost as if someone suggested that very thought about a month ago. Now who was it?
Hmm.
Could it be this guy: http://www.texanstalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=69016

I'll take option #2. I really like Warren & believe we can pick up Morgan Burnett (FS/SS) in the 4th. Burnett would give us a similar player to Pollard at FS with real good size. It'd be real nice to have some size at the safety positions & still be able to pick up a potential starting CB in the same draft.

Joseph should give us the DT we've been needing to push the pocket.

I like it.

Compare Robert Johnson Utah FS to Burnett.

Toby Gerhart is not worth a 2nd round pick.

Mike Johnson will not last until the 3rd round. He is a mid-to-late 2nd round pick.

Donovan Warren will not last until the 3rd round. He will be gone in the first 40 picks.

This option is rated more on team needs in prioity of order rather than purely based on talent alone, if that makes any sense. The main point to be taken is a trade with Tampa would return a top pick @ the beginning of each round so in essence the first 2nd pick could be 1st rd. talent as the first 3rd. 2nd rd. talent. This is why the group is tightly rated together returning extra value.

regarding Toby Gerhart, Lance Zierlein just posted this on his blog -

http://blogs.chron.com/fantasyfootball/2010_nfl_draft/

Quote:
There seems to be a bit of a split on Stanford's Toby Gerhart. While nobody is blown away by him, I do think you will see some teams who prefer a more powerful inside runner take a look at him by the mid-to-late second round despite having a 3rd round grade on him. The thought is that while Gerhart has a limited ceiling, his floor is very safe and whoever drafts him should see a fairly consistent level of production

Speeding and driving with a suspended license, a lot of young men make dumb decisions and if he interviews well, I would give him a shoot.

I was referring to him being suspended for the Cotton Bowl game for missing curfew 2 different nights the week of preparing for the game. Plus the record shows his license was suspended for violations then he was arrested for driving after that anyway. http://www.newson6.com/Global/story.asp?S=11023391

I can't find the other link I read some weeks ago that said he blatantly violated several traffic laws but finally a judge had enough and suspended him.

Missed the curfew thing, again I would go to his coach and talk to him, and then to the young man, you can tell alot by the way the player owns up to the punishment in the interview.

Isn't Starks coming off a pretty serious injury?
