Default Andre Johnson this season (old thread alert)

Just wanted everyone's thoughts on how improved yall think Andre will be this season at WR?Personally, hopefully he has been working on his hands, but knowing him he has most likely been working hard in all aspects........

Usually the 3rd year for a receiver is their breakout one. They often have the sophomore jinx.

Default I see improvements

He had a great rookie season, 65 receptions or thereabouts. I think he'll improve on that number. His main problem IMO last season was dropping some of the easier grabs. I also remember in the colts game where he forgot to drag his feet in the end zone, leading to an out of bounds call. I have a good feeling that he's going to eliminate alot of those "rookie" mistakes from his game and have a strong showing this season. Probably not anything groundbreaking, but he's going to be solid.

I hope he works on his technique of catching and putting his feet inbounds. Remember his down side was dropping passes out of college :-( I remember that post he ran in preseason game last yr perfect route for a TD and he dropped the ball my heart just dropped! Hope he won`t be 1 of the speed burners who can`t catch in the NFL. To be honest he gave the Patriots a gift last yr. With a drop down by the 20 and fumble of a end around!

I think this is last year to be an OK Receiver if even that. Last year he was a Good Rookie, this year a Good Pro, Next year a PRO BOWLER I hope I am wrong and he skips Good Pro but it will be difficult he has alot of improving to do but is right on track. I think this will be an AWESOME Year for Mr. Johnson

15.0 ypc it's a steep mountain to climb but looking at AJ I think he has the "Potential" to do it but the question is does he want it bad enough to work VERY VERY VERY hard 4 it?

I look for improvement and then a little cooling off from AJ this coming season. It seems to me that a lot of times recievers come into their rookie season with a case of nerves. AJ did drop a lot of balls last year that were apparently easy grabs and every year it seems like we see this from rookie recievers (and Corey Bradford). Going into 2004 I look for him to have settled down some and to start making more catches. Gaffney seemed to get a lot more reliable at the start of 2003 if you remember. At one point I was really getting pumped over how much better his hands seemed to be.

Then after he starts to get going something will happen. Maybe he'll get a little sure of himself or maybe he'll drop one for no apparent reason and his confidence will take a little hit. Maybe he'll start getting more attention from the defensive backs and things will get tougher all of a sudden. For whatever reason I expect him to cool off after about 6-7 weeks and then if he's as good as we all think he is (me too) he'll get his second wind and finish the season strong.

This of course leads into his third year where he's finally completely comfortable with what's going on and he starts banging cornerbacks like a drum on his way to the Pro Bowl.

That's how I think this is going to play out. I also think Gaffney's going to have a heck of a season this year. I'm counting on it.

That sounds about right

all I hope for is that Carr can stay healthy so they can continue to devolp a Manning-Harrison type chemistry.

I expect the tandem of Carr/Johnson to be an explosive one this season. I don't feel that Johnson can afford a sophomore slump this this year. As long as Davis is running like he did last year and Carr gets the proper protection there should be no reason for Johnson not to join the 1,000 yd. receiving club this year. Hopefully, we'll open this offense up a bit more, but that will depend on how the running game and protection is going though!

As the team improves as a unit, Andre Johnson will improve as a receiver. One thing that impressed me immensely last season was AJ's blocking ability; he is very active when he does not have the ball.

I wager we will see marked improvement in the chemistry with Carr and Johnson this season.

I was watching some games today that I had recorded and AJ is just amazing to watch once he's got the ball and turning upfield. He hits defensive backs, they don't hit him. He just mows people over.

Also Fiddy you should add that our blocking should be much improved in 2004. With Wade coming in and Brown coming back I expect the Texans to be stuffed inside the ten a lot less often than they were last year. Not that they were getting manhandled or anything but our blocking is going to get better and add that to another years experience for DD and I see some more "DOMANICK DAVIS AT THE 5! AT THE 1! TOUCHDOWN TEXANS!"

it all comes down to who is playing WR for us on other side, if someone not even his grandma fears...will be AJ playing tag you're it with double coverage.

A player that scares the defensive coordinator, we will see AJ post some incredible numbers.

I hate to use a Cowboys player as an example, my momma taught me better than that. but when Irvin had a legit WR they couldn't keep both guys on him and let other guy run downfield...We need our #2 WR to step up and make the D come after him to free up AJ

AJ's numbers will improve this year, not a whole lot but I think he'll put up the same type of numbers. The key is for him is to become the primary target in the endzone and if that happens his touchdown numbers will increase. A no.2 receiver will also help out Johnson.

what the texans should do is give him quick hitches every play. those work well plus they would benefit his numbers

Lot of talk about recievers 2-5 (including DD)taking the pressure off double coverage on AJ. Assuming that AJ is the primary target (which he will be on most WR plays) the 2-5 are check offs. Carr rarely has the time to check all the way down to the 3 and 4. Gaffney made some great plays when Carr was able to buy time, scramble and allow Gaffney to create. Carr has had D-lineman on him before he can take a 2 step drop. Im telling you if the O-Line were to give Carr a 3 step drop and 3 or 4 secs in the pocket consistantly many things would change.

Coaches would not be called conservative anymore

AJ will be a pro bowler

More recievers will be able to contribute

Carrs passing rating will increase

DD's numbers would increase

The D will not be on the field as long.

The Texans make the playoffs

I could go on forever it seems....

The first half of last season proved that to be true. Carrs numbers were OUTSTANDING. DD caused some problems and we lost a couple we shouldn't have. Give David time and we can light it up, but we need a complete TE and some sort of #2 to make it all fly.
