Default Well's Haters

This really gets me! Wells for the second time put up a decent showing against a good run defense (ranked 6th), and he gets **** for it... Come on folks.. Get off his back. He put up a touchdown, over 100 yards (not including the TD called back due to holding). Give him some credit... The zone has opened up some routes for him he didnt have in the past, and the O-line is now helping him... He aint a bad player, get off his case...

Who's givin' him ****? He has gotten perhaps more than blame than he deserved over the past few years, but everybody seems to be giving him his well deserved props today.
After a few years he is developing into exactly what we thought when we drafted him. It took him a while to warm up at Ohio State, too.

One comment in another thread was:

1. Wells was running well but was RARELY going for more than about 4 yards. His numbers can be attributed to a few good runs, and a slew of average ones.

There have been a few others around.

I saw him fighting hard for yards... I only saw 1 time he really hesitated, and for being a third string running back, I thought he did a very good job stepping up and in.

Yeah... My hate on the guy has a reason to simmer down, now... I guess the horrible line and rookie inexperience were to blame. We have three good backs, each with a very different style.

Default Believed in him since we drafted him....

If you could pull up the old MB you could check out my support of J.Wells from the start. I am a Big D.Davis fan because he is from LSU and wish him always the best but I wish that for all our players...I have only voice dislike of one player because he sucked....STEVENS!!!! That boy couldn't play on my High School team(Cy~Fair FIGHTING BOBCATS!!!). Anyway, I am really glad he has stepped up and ran hard over the past few games that he has gotten his second chance.

good game by Wells!!! I am glad we got to step it up when we needed it.

I stay even keel on this.. I don't think we have a runningback that strikes the fear into opposing defenses at this moment... but if we don't fumble we have some backs that can make woody hayes happy (ole 3 yards and a cloud of dust)

He's our 1st 100 yard rusher this season. On top of that he did it against a defense that was 6th in the NFL against the run, which says alot about both the blocking up front and Wells himself. I'm happy for the guy, he played a big part in the win.

I have liked the efforts of all 3 backs this year. Injuries do play a part. As I have mentioned before, I'd like to have a big ol' power back that could guarantee 3 yds every time he touched the ball in a short situation. Wells may come to fulfill that role as he ran strong yesterday. As others have said, blocking makes an average player look pretty darn good. I think the player will depend on the play. As 4th round picks, Wells & Davis make Casserly look like a genius. Why did Baxter have a return? Was Moses out for that play?

Nope, Oakland's kicker hit it short and to the left of the field--straight to Baxter.

Wells had a great game yesterday under the circumstances, but I still view him as the 3rd stringer, altough he is giving me pause to wonder if he might slip ahead of Hollings. You can't teach speed, and Hollings has that in spades. Anyone remember that run of his in the preseason? Think Wells can do that? Wells reminds me a little of Gary Brown.

As to DD, is it just me, or does anyone else notice the irony of winnning 2 games in a row, with DD on the bench? Look at the way the offense has opened up in these games. Look how Billy Miller has been brought back from the witness protection program. Look how Carr is exploiting the seam against the cover two all the sudden. It seems to me that DD was the equilvent of Linus's security blanket. Since he has been out, Carr has been forced to survey the field, and not rely so quickly on the checkdown to the RB. It wouldn't bother me at all if DD was out another week or two. I hope this will also be a lesson for when DD gets back.

Okay. Today I am enjoying a nice big bowl of crowe. I admit Wells has not been one of my favorite players to talk about. I have enjoyed his team first attitude and I believe that is why we are talking so great about him today. His play resulted in a win so I am more than happy to eat this bowl of crowe.

I believe his opportunity came at the right time as maybe now the coaching staffs eyes have opened to Carr being the man the offense needs to go through. I believe Davis would've had a break out game this week though on some of the runs Wells couldn't make. I also believe Wells was a big factor on 3rd down and I believe those short gains are the ones that Davis has more trouble making, and him being a bigger backs allows us not to be so predictable on those 3rd and short situations because we won't have to be in an I formation each time.

The thing that strikes me is Wells only put the ball on the ground once, because the defender got lower than he did and put a helmet on the ball. DD is having injury issues and IF he continues to put the ball on the ground IMO we need to take a hard look at our RB situation.

You know, I really think there is something to that. There were no fumbles, which really cost us in our 1st 2 games. Second, the playcalling has improved IMO. Like you said, without Carr being able to give it to DD on easy dunk passes, he was able to survey to people who you are actually supposed to pass to: Recievers and Tight Ends!!! We have a great core of recievers and tight ends, we might as well use them, right?

I also maintain the stance that if DD fumbles, BENCH HIM. He is great, but I don't think he is a guy who can be the difference between winning and losing. Wells and Holling (unfortunately both are fumblers too) are reliable backs as well. You have got to teach this guy not to fumble and there is no better way to drive that point than to keep him off the field. I really like DD and there is no question that DD is our starting RB, but he should not be accounting for over 45% of our offense. Especially when you have a set of tight ends and recievers that are at least top 15 in the league.

I think with the success the team had without DD, he may be driven once again to perform well. Some of DD's fumbles did come from second efforts though. You can't really get too mad at that because alot of DDs second efforts result in positive yardage and TDs.
