Default Gregg Williams Had Opposing Playbooks Before Facing Teams

Gregg Williams Had Opposing Playbooks Before Facing Teams
Quote:
During the final day of Radio Row in New York City in preparation for the Super Bowl in New Jersey on Sunday Renaldo Wynn sat down with Mike Meltser & Seth Payne on SportsRadio 610′s MaD Radio.

Payne and Wynn played together for the Jacksonville Jaguars, and when Payne brought up their success and coming up one win short of the Super Bowl while playing in Jacksonville, Wynn dropped a bombshell about the Jaguars loss in the 1999 AFC Championship game to the Tennessee Titans.

“You know why we fell short in that AFC Championship game? After that I ended up getting coached by Gregg Williams. And Greg Williams was, at the time, defensive coordinator by the Tennessee Titans,” Wynn told Payne & Meltser “First thing he said when he came in the door was ‘Hey, you know why you lost?’ With a lot of other explicit words with that. He said he had our play book. Greg Williams had our play book. Our game-plan on offense. [He] had our playbook.

Payne thought Wynn wouldn’t know how Williams acquired the playbook but Wynn surprised the hosts, “I know how he got them,” Wynn said. “He started getting playbooks when I was with him.” Wynn did not elaborate at the time about how Williams received the playbooks.

Williams has had some controversy in his career which started at Tennessee where he was the defensive coordinator from 1997 – 2000. In 1999 the Titans fell one yard short of a Super Bowl win against the St. Louis Rams that year. Williams would end up working as a defensive coordinator with the Washington Redskins, where he crossed paths with Wynn again. Williams then coached for the New Orleans Saints, winning the Super Bowl, but being suspended from coaching for almost a year for ‘Bounty Gate,’ where it was found there were money payouts for big hits by his defensive players.

“I’m sorry Gregg, I had to put you out there,” Wynn said at the end of the interview. “You can’t go no lower than what you’ve been already.”

I spoke to Renaldo Wynn. He said a Jaguars player had left a playbook laying around at the stadium and the Titans picked it up (cont)

He said the AFC Championship game was the only time it happened that year. It should be noted that Titans had beaten us twice already.
Did Gregg Williams Keep Me Out Of The Super Bowl?

I’m still sorting through my feelings about this. We only lost 3 games the entire ’99-’00 season and post-season, and all of them were to the Titans. I’m angry, but I also feel a little better about our team. It was the greatest team I would ever play for, and I’ve always wondered just what went wrong. We were able to dominate most of the teams we played that season. We beat the Dolphins 62-7 in the divisional round the week before this game, but for some reason the Titans just had our number.

That Jaguars team was loaded with guys who deserved to go to a Super Bowl, and I’m honored to have played alongside them. I’m also honored to have played for Tom Coughlin, who in so many ways is the opposite of Gregg Williams. I’m not sure how commonly things like this happen, but in the 18 years I’ve been involved in the NFL this is the first I’ve heard of it.
