Default Jared Crick Breakout Season?

Bleecher Report profile targets Texans break-out player this upcoming season as Jared Crick-

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1...3-star/page/14

Quote:
What made defensive end Jared Crick fall to the fourth round of last year's draft was the fact that he didn't have a very high ceiling. He was an NFL-ready player who was already polished.

However, just because a player doesn't seem to have a high ceiling doesn't mean he can't become a star in the NFL. Crick has the ability to make an impact in both the run and pass game with his high motor and football smarts.

Even though it's hard to see him surpassing either J.J. Watt or Antonio Smith on the depth chart, Crick should still see the field often enough to make a big impact for the Houston Texans.
Big fan of Crick selection previous draft, his stock was down not because of ceiling but inury that stripped him most of Senior season (pectoral tear). During rehab process he faced & overcame other physical issues (pinched nerve neck w/back soreness) we started seeing a healthy Crick towards end of last season as he repped behind Antonio Smith & Watt with Tim Jamison down for season. Listed 6-4 287 the veterans will report this Friday. Jared is now 100% in excellent health, working hard this off-season with Texans monitored closely by Kollar. I believe he has the makings of a poor mans JJ Watt, as a teammate, hard working overachiever. Expect him to be part of a three man rotation inside out as DE/Nose with Smith & Mitchell. Thoughts?

Not much to add. I think your take is spot on. Looking forward to seeing him in action this fall!

It's possible Crick breaks out. But there's nothing he's done at this point in the NFL to make that assumption. If I were to select a breakout candidate for the Texans, it would be Mercilus. He has had some success thus far in regards to rushing the passer, though he has ground to make up in defending the run.

Plus the fact he's not a starter. I guess it depends on one's definition of 'breakout'.

Agreed. Mercilus will also see more playing time while Jamison will likely eat into Crick's

I agree. I've been looking forward to the start of training camp to see what he brings this year. With the added weight, I can't stop thinking he'll nail down the NT position for us. If he can rediscover the greatness he had in college & is able to fill the NT position, our front line could be even more dominant than it was last year. Throw in a fully recovered Cushing & this defense could be one of the most stifling defenses to come along in a long time. And that's saying a lot.

These days guys routinely come back from what is thought to be more serious
type injuries involving knees, so what's the big deal with a Pec ? If he'd have been healthy, maybe a third-rounder but not a first round pick as many like to speculate IMO. And I'm not knockin him here, I'm a fan and remember him from his days as a Cornhusker, glad we have him.

Near as I can tell, Crick is MOL the same size as Antonio S. & Jamison, yet it's usually only Crick who's spoken of as able to play the Nose (besides DE), so why is that ?

fair enough. but according to ourlads a paid independent scouting service Jared Crick graded out 8.95 out of 10 & given a 1st/2nd rd. grade. Guys slip further than expected all the time in the draft for various reasons. My stance is it was because of health issues (which we hope are behind him) & being shutdown into his senior season.

Crick was graded out @ DT position. Ranked 6th in his class of 2012 behind Fletcher Cox, Michael Brockers, Devon Still, Jerel Worthy & Kendall Reyes.

For me, it's because Crick is a true DT. Smith & Jamison played DE most of their careers. Crick is a truer inside player.

According to my way of thinking, Smith & Jamison would be out of place in what I consider a traditional 3-4. Too short to play end, not wide enough to play NT.

But wade is using them as a traditional 4-3 UT & it works. In a 4-3 I can see Crick playing both the NT & UT, but not DE.

The thing about Crick is that he is a completely different style of player (at this point) than Watt and Smith. Whereas our two starting DE's are more finesse oriented and make plays with quickness and penetration, Crick is more of a power player. He can use his hands for swims and rips, but he doesn't have the feet of Watt or Smith roll around the hip of a guard and really make them pay. He gets it done with strength, motor, and very good spacial awareness. Think of him sort of in the mold of Justin Smith, just not really as talented or as strong.

Where Crick really excels at is stack and shed run defense, and I already think he is a better run defender than Ninja. He is very tough to blow off the line of scrimmage, and his ability to disengage and make a tackle is very, very impressive. I could see that kind of ability helping Mercilus more than anyone else because he would then be able to (in a four man front) focus on the weak side A and B gaps while Mercilus only worries about rushing the passer/containing the C gap. Will Crick get a lot of sacks? Probably not unless the edge rush pushes quarterbacks up into his reach. Does he still have potential to be an extremely important piece of the defensive front by collapsing the pocket and controlling the line of scrimmage? Absolutely.

I don't really see Jared Crick as a "break-out" type player. He's been a utility guy that we have been able to put at NT or either one of the DE spots and he's good for a series. He doesn't really blow you away with anything, but he just seems solid.

Mercilus is certainly going to get the opportunity to be the breakout guy in his second year.
