Default The Story of Willie Jefferson OLB SFA

He's just now making his name known in OTA's because during 7 on 7's he did his best JJ Watt impression and snagged the ball out of the air at the line of scrimmage and returned it for a TD.

Now...how he ended up a Houston Texan..

Quote:
In October 2010, Gordon and teammate Willie Jefferson were arrested after they fell asleep in a drive-through line at a Taco Bell. Police found marijuana in Jefferson’s car. Jefferson, who was driving, was kicked off the team because it was his second violation.

Jefferson transferred to Stephen F. Austin, switched to defense and became an All-America defensive end and legitimate NFL prospect.
I like to see the Texans giving someone a chance even if they might have a slight police record. It wasn't thuggish, he wasn't robbing someone, he just smoked a little something and got caught. Kids do it.

Now thanks to @JaysonBraddock , he had some inside info on Willie Jefferson and he could be one to keep your eyes on in the preseason.

Quote:
Jefferson went to Baylor as a 6'5 WR and then switched to TE. After going to SFA, he had all new beginnings & moved over to the defense.
Quote:
Willie Jefferson's 1st year at SFA & playing defense, he had an eye popping 15 sacks, 15 TFLs, 2 INTs returned for TDs, & three 2 pt conv
Quote:
Did I mention he had a 38" vertical or that he won the Golden Gloves as a Junior Heavyweight. How about him being a track & basketball star?
Quote:
Let's throw in gymnastics for good measure. His experience as a WR led to quick get off & sharp cuts around the edges as a pass rusher.
Quote:
Jefferson set the record for sacks in a game with 4.5, then came back and broke that with 5.
Quote:
Going back to the slender 6'5 kid I saw yesterday. Initial thought was, WOW, these are some of the most violent arms, but he's too slim.
Quote:
I asked Willie today about his weight. He came in at 6'5 233 lbs, but today he said he's already bulked up to 240 w/ plans to be 255 soon
Quote:
I asked Willie, how is that he has more violent arms then fellow rookies, Sam Montgomery & Trevardo Williams, coming from SFA?
Quote:
Jefferson said he wanted to show coaches that his hands were real violent & knew that w/ him being undersized he had to do something special
Quote:
Willie said he needs coaches to see something in him that they don't see in anybody else.
Quote:
Willie Jefferson said his background as a WR & TE have helped him develop stellar hands and footwork. Very quick hands & fast feet.
Quote:
It's only May and he has along way to go, but his back story and his development make this a guy to watch come July & August.
Consider me intrigued.

Great athlete. I hope he does well at OLB. Gives the lb corps a little bit of depth.

Here's a video of him vs. Northwestern State.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VRhoUc7HjsA

A few highlights in there.

4:35 - Moves so quick off the line and with his long stride makes it hard to prepare for him because he blows by you. Beats double team for easy sack.

6:42 - Blow by the RT with ease and comes within a millisecond of making the sack. QB got the ball out extremely quick and even then he was almost stripped.

7:23 - Love this play. He beats the RT with an inside jab and then bull rushes past the RB to make the sack. He didn't just settle for the sack he went for the strip. He runs in on the QB after beating the attempted double team and punches the ball out of there.

7:36 - He starts off by pretending to try a speed rush to the outside but then hits the LT with a swim move to the inside. Long arms and very fast hands. (You can see it when you watch) He has a free rush to the QB who throws it but Jefferson is already in his face and he just slaps the ball away for a Pass Deflection.

7:45 - Beats the LT with ease and then jumps up to almost bat the pass down.

He starts off slow because being at 233 he's not going to offer much in the run game but he starts to heat up when the other team needs to start passing. Almost unfair to watch him play vs. these Tackles. Not even close.

Constantly beating double teams. Not going to happen in the NFL (obviously) but he was definitely the best player on the field and that was obvious.

If you have 8 minutes to spare it's a pretty good video overall and some of the plays he made resulted in his teammates getting sacks.

It's funny because i've been at McDonald's and a Taco Bell before and have had to wait for over 20 minutes for my food.

Being high probably doesn't help.

I'm interested to see how he plays on special teams kick coverage. That will earn him a roster spot similiar to Braman and keep him off the practice squad.

He played pretty well at training camp on Friday. I saw him jump really high and block a pass down the middle. He also had a few plays that would have been a sack, but that was with the second squad of a veteran day off...

Even though...

John McClain ‏@McClain_on_NFL

Willie Jefferson eats five meals a day and lifts weights like crazy to gain weight and get stronger. He has amazing quickness off the edge.

Gary Kubiak says rookie OLB Willie Jefferson has a "chance to help us immediately." Jefferson is almost 6-6 and is up to 250 from 233.
I still have to think the game catches up to him at some point in the preseason. If not, and he's able to keep his head above water, then the Texans Front Office has made a tremendous steal from the UDFA ranks. Here's hoping...

I think you're right while he's playing every down in the preseason. But I think Kubiak is probably looking at him as a situational pass rusher at this point. Allow him to play and not think too much. That's why I think its important for Sam to get back healthy. He'll probably play the run a lot better.

I heard on the radio today that Willie Jefferson was kicked out of Baylor because they exhausted their disciplinary procedures concerning his marijuana use.

Here, in the OP of this thread, we hear that Willie Jefferson & his friend were busted as they fell asleep in the Taco Bell Drive through.

When I heard the Taco Bell thing, I thought, "No big deal." It's a little thing. NOW, after finding out Baylor addressed this issue several times kicked him out of the program, then he still has issues @ SFA... I'm starting to wonder about this kid. Wonder if he truly understands & appreciates the position he is in.

He appears to be a talented MoFo, but I hope his drug days are behind him, regardless how "recreational"

We obviously don't really know, but Braman also had drug issues in college and is arguably our best non-kicker special teamer.

I didn't know Braman had "drug issues". I thought he was just gardening up some little ol' 'schrooms and got popped.

Oh... yeah! Yeah. That's it.

He was just doing some extra credit for a GARDENING class and got popped for growing those shrooms. That's it.

Shroom Gardening 201. Very popular class for certain biology majors.

Yes, having a mushroom chemistry lab means he had a drug issue. He either was selling, using, or both. dude pled guilty to having the lab. No need to defend a guy who admitted to doing something illegal.

Did Braman get kicked out of a good-great program, then continue to show problems on his "second chance"

I'm not saying the Texans shouldn't have signed him, I'm saying I hope Willie Jefferson understands how lucky he is. This is at least his third chance, most guys don't get one.
