I actually believe Bruener was brought in to help out the left side with Wand and Pitts being the left tackle and left guard. Bruener brings that veteran help for the second year left tackle Wand and to Pitts who could be starting at guard for the first time in his NFL career. That is a pretty sound idea...using a 2 TE set with Bruener on the left would definetly give us a great shot at balancing the line strength and opening up the whole field for the ground game. Bruener on the southpaw side would clearly help the development of Wand.
I am a big fan of the ACE set...I think it plays well to our position strengths and style of offense, we seemed to function out of that as a base offensive set pretty well over the last couple seasons.
