Actually Sean Payton was a QB in the replacement games for the Bears during the strike . I think he actually stuck around a bit when the real players came back . Not big but very smart QB .

Gruden was a QB at Dayton for 3 years but didn't get a sniff as a player in the NFL .

The road is littered with great coaches who weren't great players . This is in every sport and the list includes Lombardi , Lasorda , Carrol , Van Gundy , and so on .
