Pat Summerall dies at 82

DALLAS -- Pat Summerall was the calm alongside John Madden's storm.

Over four decades, Summerall's deep, resonant voice described some of the biggest games in America. Simple, spare, he delivered the details on 16 Super Bowls, the Masters and the U.S. Open tennis tournament with a simple, understated style that was the perfect complement for the "boom!" and "bang!" of Madden, his partner for half of the NFL player-turned-broadcaster's career.

Summerall died Tuesday at age 82 of cardiac arrest, said University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center spokesman Jeff Carlton, speaking on behalf of Summerall's wife, Cheri.

"He was an extraordinary man and a wonderful father," said Susie Wiles, his daughter. "I know he will be greatly missed."

And she would be right. I loved his style and voice. Best announcing voice you could have for an NFL game. Those days with him and Madden were the best as far as I was concerned.

RIP, Pat.

I agree with that. I'm not such a huge Madden fan, but that tandem was fantastic. It's a great example where the total was greater than the sum of its parts, IMO.

The tandem of Summerall and Madden was classic, unfortunately and not to be a:

It sucked that the majority of the games he covered were the Cowgurls.

Nonetheless RIP Pat, you were....... nay are an important piece of Americana!! Again, RIP!

You ARE my hero whenever it comes to iron livers. My liver will never make it to 82 years old!

True, when I hear his voice I think of those Cowboys 3 o'clock games, that Cowboys horn music they always played at Texas Stadium, etc. It seems like in the 90s he was doing all of their games. How many times did we hear him say "Troy Aikman, Emmitt Smith, Michael Irvin, etc"?

If the Oilers won I would normally watch those games. If not I typically would not be in the mood to watch a second game, especially the Cowboys.

R.I.P. Pat. Your professionalism (and tact) are sorely missed in this Bob Costas era.
