I think the following trades are not only possible but good for all teams. Detroit selects LT then trades 1st round # 20, a 3rd and a 5th to Texans in a trade reminiscent of the D. Brown trade down. They then select @# 15 QB Matt Stafford. Texans trade # 20 pick first round to Atlanta who selects either DT Peria or a LB. Texans receive 1st round #25, a 3rd and a 6th.
Texans then trade #25 to Detroit for the 33 pick over all (1st in 2nd round) and a 4th. Detroit has 3 first round #1,# 15 and # 25 picks to bring them back into contention but give up a 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th.

2nd:NT Ron Brace
2nd:DE Robert Ayers or if not there Rashad Jennings RB
3rd: FS Rashad Johnson
3rd:OLB Marcus Freeman great against run or pass. Plays ILB also
3rd:OLT Xavier Fulton http://cookies.sportsline.com/nfl/draft/players/517608Read the 2007 season report. Great player for ZBS.
4th:OG Trevor Canfield no legal issues over one year. May be gone.
4th: ILB Daniel Holtzclaw
4th:O.G. Louis Vasquez Texas Tech 6'5" 333lbs Great strength. This is the Sage pick and I just could not keep this guard off my board. He started 22 and will have to beat out someone. His weight bothered me but TT is known for Oline blocking for passes and he does well against the run.

5th WR Aaron Kelly like Vasquez, I can not keep him off the board. Size, speed, vertical! I'd like to see him lined up inside the 20 with Johnson.

6th: RB Gartrell Johnson . This guy runs like a tank and would be the short yardage guy.
7th: P Kevin Huber http://www.walterfootball.com/draft2009PU.phpGood candidate that I would hide on P.S. if he did not beat out Turk.

Thanks. The good think about this one is the players I want have good % of being available and if not a reasonable alternative in that round can be found. It addresses all our needs except center and my position is Smith will stay with what we have.

No issues with your picks, but I really doubt Detroit would want to sell most of its remaining draft to move up 5 spots for one pick and 8 spots for another. The Lions looks almost like a carbon copy of the Texans circa March 2006: an all-world wide receiver and precious little else. In that situation, they need more quality bodies to rebuild the roster. So I don't see the Lions giving up many, if any, picks (well, if they're smart they won't; if Matt Millen was still the GM, then party on, Rick Smith!).

Also, having three first rounders--particularly when one is the top pick--is incredibly expensive and limits a team's financial flexibility going forward. In these times (especially in Michigan), I'm not sure the Lions want to go that route.

IMO, I don't think there will be as much 1st round trading as in years past. I just don't see the talent to justify teams wanting to move up to grab someone.

The value looks to be pretty high at #15 so I imagine they will keep their pick and pick the BPA. If Stafford or Sanchez are still there maybe you could extort a team into trading up but aside from that, its probably best to stand pat at #15. If you like Cushing, he would be your safety-net pick as he looks to be there at #15 in most mocks and at a position of need...then you could just hope that someone who you had ranked higher than Cushing would fall in your lap (Raji comes to mind but a longshot at best)

Yeah, I know. I went over this for hours this weekend with exactly your thoughts. I have compared Detroit and Texans since the Carr and Joey days.

Lions are approx $40 million under cap and salaries can be widely "manipulated" to team benefit. My thinking is Detroit needs to hit a home run to get fans into the Stadium and buying NFL gear. The LT and Qb Stafford should get national attention. The 25th pick can still bring them a starter and getting three starters in a draft is pretty good. They have the $, do they want to spend?

I was a bit surprised the team did not make an offer to TO who brings a solid player and attention even if he is a club lawyer. He did not hurt the Dallas win column.

Man, I missed that. Seems the Cowboys are always raining on my parade. That was the pick I hesitated on the most as not sure Detroit would give that up with 2nd round for #25. Anyway, I'd be ok with the first 2/3s of the trade. We'd have the #25 pick in first and still could get a decent player or guarantee Ayers or maybe a strong RB. I still think RB can come later.

Yeah if not these two team, I don't see much out there. Maybe someone else will want a QB if Stafford slides to 15.

I disagree. The odds are no one I want will be there at 15. Jenkins, Raji, Orakpo have been mentioned but realistically, all should be gone. I would not take a LB at #15. I really hope we are not forced to over reach.

someone will drop that we covet. i would have no problem drafting a LB in the 1st Round as LB tends to be one of the positions that a guy can come in and contribute from day one. as long as they draft someone who plays with some passion on defense, i will be fine. our defense needs some heart.

Xavier Fulton looked like a blocking dummy at the senior bowl practices and game. I dont think I can get those images out of my head.

Maybe by the 5th/6th round I could.

You know I'm all for move downs...and if these are the guys you like...more power to you....But come September the Turk's sword will run red with blood. You only got about four or five roster spots for how many guys in your mock ?

The guys you select in rounds three through five are going to be rather difficult to hide on the waver wire to sneak on the PS. Just saying there.

Detroit would do that in a heart beat, in fact I wonder if thats enough?

Atlanta has the 24th pick Peria Jerry would tempt them. thats only four teams away, Texans could do worse than just taking him themselves, good value here. then you have Philly, other needs. Vikings, their DL is set. Then NE a 3-4 defense who are retooling their OLB position, Larry English/Aaron Maybin, Clint Sintim types. the only thing they would have to worry about is another team jumping in front. so I think your trade scenero ends here, but you did move down 5 spots take Peria or best defensive player available + add extra 3rd & 5th. works for me :)

That is because they had him playing LT and in the NFL he would be a Guard. He is athletic and moves well and would be a good fit for the ZBS.

i understand, but my belief is a game like that is a Chinese fire drill, shuffling players in, out around and I can see how a player may not look as good. this why I give props to guys like Ayers and Gartrell Johnson that did look exceptional in that game. No excuse for not blocking the guy in front of you though.

I do not understand your post. I think that all of these players except for the punter in 7th have a legitimate chance to make roster. I doubt many are worried about the Turk now; just get good players in the off season and let the best survive. Actually, imo 3rd round guys are strong to make final roster. My 4th round guys Canfield and Holtzman should challenge at least the back up guys at their position. Guard Vasquez is more of a project type but is the 3rd selection in 4th round (Sage trade) and could be on PS. Hey, any player on the PS could be wanted by another team.

This is info I had. I think the coaches thought they were doing him a favor giving trams a look at him as a LT. Games such as Senior bowl and the combine can give a view of skills but I tend to focus more on how the player actually did for his college team.
