Vandermock 1.0

First mock that didnt make me cringe for whatever reason. Manziel is my 2nd rated QB, but the later selections really make this mock to be quite balanced.

http://www.houstontexans.com/news/ar...0-d265ac9dfe0b

1. Manziel QB/ A&M
2. Dee Ford DE/Auburn
3. Yawin Smallwood ILB/UCONN
4. Justin Ellis DT/ LA Tech
5. Wesley Johnson OT/ Vandy
6. Storm Johnson RB/ UCF
7. Jeff Matthews QB/ Cornell

Glad your excited for it.

Manziel is third cab off the rank QB wise for me, I wouldn't freak out if we took him but I would prefer Bridgewater or Bortles.

Ford, I am concerned is going to be a one dimensional pass rusher. Much rather get a more diverse skill set for OLB.

Smallwood should be solid next to Cushing, prefer a guy with more cover skills but he is probably only a 2 down linebacker anyway.

Don't know much about Johnson, but a quick read up on him, makes him sound like a good RT option.

I would be happy with Ellis, have mocked him to the Texans before.

Hate drafting RBs. When the mockers rationale is his cool name to announce, hard to take seriously too. Not a player I am excited about anyway. Vision and explosion seem to be issues.

7th round flyer on a player that some really like seems ok, nice to have a fall back if JFF flames out.

FWIW, Ellis is not a pure NT despite his weight. He's more like Dontari Poe, who was also a natural 3' tech in college despite being massive. He needs to be coached up to be a NT just like Poe did.

His ability to get penetration despite his size is part of his appeal to me,.

If they don't double him like the system dictates, he should make them pay.

That lineup does nothing for me. I really dont care for a single guy in that list. And that includes Ford and Smallwood.

Can you explain about Ford and Smallwood?

I guess my issue with Dee Ford has more to do with his draft status from "mocksters" than his ability. Fist round? Or top of 2nd? That seems really high to me for a guy who has never played linebacker and will be expected to make the transition. I feel that he rose sharply due to a productive NC game and Senior Bowl where he had 2 sacks (Logan Thomas...) I dont think I would have a problem taking him in the 3rd round. But #33 is just too high IMO.

I will take back my comment on Yawin as I just dont know much about him. I would be OK with him in the 3rd since we desperately need youth at the ILB position and he does have very impressive tackling numbers and size.

Re: Vandermock 1.0

Lastly, where is the TE help? Graham is a free agent, and I doubt Daniels is retained at his price and lack of ability to block. I would expect O'Brien to look for a New England style TE who can block when needed and create receiving matchup issues. Say Austin Seferian-Jenkins at the top of the 2nd? Maybe he takes 2 TEs and selects C.J. Fiedorowicz in the 3rd or 4th if available.

I find Vanermock 1.0 a very restraining, middle of the road, without a whole lot of draft analysis to back it up. Excatly like when you listen to him on the radio, nice guy, middle of the road takes, careful not to step on toes. He also may have some inside buzz on Manziel, but not really fair to say.

Looks like JFF is going #1. Corrosion said BoB fell in love with JFF and I believe him.

The rest of the draft is light on strengthening the trenches for my taste. It's time to add toughness to the tean and that starts in the trenches. More OL/TE's with blocking ability.

If you replaced Ford with Morgan Moses, Johnson with Matt Patchan and Matthews with Najavar I would be much happier. Being that I'm a build the trenches 1st kind of guy.

So a poster hates this mock up because of a few names he is totally unfamiliar with and even acknowledges as 'not knowing much about him/them" ... LOL ... Got it.

Owen Daniels will be great in this system, I dont think O'Brien scraps him. Graham will be resigned. TE help isnt hard to find.

Here come the Texans trying to ramp up the possibility of them taking Manziel first overall, and maybe make the Browns uneasy enough to give up the 4,the 26, next years 1st and a 2nd somewhere along the line?

Yep

If this were to happen you probably could get one of Clowney/TB/BB/Robinson. This would be the ideal situation. I would even take les, #4/2nd rd pick/2015 1st.

I can only assume you are talking about me. But I never said I hate the mock. I said it doesnt do anything for me or excite me. And I never said I was unfamiliar with "them." I said I was unfamiliar with Smallwood. Why would you write that?

Can you expand upon your statement? How is OD going to be great in the system?

I just think he is going to want better big body blocking TE's ala Gronk and Hernandez. And at 4.5 million he is an easy cap savings target.

Everyone wants a Gronk - they're hard to find.

Aaron Hernandez (6'2" 250 lbs) is insignificantly different in size than OD (6'3" 245 lbs).

He's not $4.5 mil in savings after you get done replacing him. But I won't be surprised either way they decide to go on him.

Who takes anything Vandy says seriously?

He's a company man just like Rick. They may as well be brothers. They know what the McNair's want and give it to them. (Very little substance) I really don't blame Vandy/Rick.

Dee Ford is only a good selection if projected to the elephant position. He's OK but slightly smaller than Crennel likes. Where this mock fall way short is that it fails to address the SSOLB.

VanderMock 2.0
Quote:

Round 1 Teddy Bridgewater, QB, Louisville
I was temped to fabricate a trade with Cleveland that had the Browns, in a panic, move up to take Clowney (or Manziel. Does it really matter?) with the Texans getting Blake Bortles at number four and NT Louis Nix with Cleveland's other first rounder but then reality set in. Bridgewater is the highest rated quarterback on most teams' boards (according to me). He has the skills and mental make up to handle the pressure of being the top pick and he will deliver. I had Manziel going number one in my last mock but Bridgewater won me over with his Scouting Combine press conference in which he dropped a Johnny Unitas reference.

Round 2 Chris Borland, ILB Wisconsin
Before you freak out, think of this: Brian Cushing is coming off a major injury and Daryl Sharpton and Joe Mays are hitting free agency. Plus, this position group has been steamrolled by injuries in three of the last four years. Last year, Cushing was knocked out in week seven and everyone else missed at least a slice of time. The year before, Cushing went out in week five and the Texans were decimated down the stretch. '11 was a healthy ILB year and their best defensive year. And in '10, DeMeco Ryans was lost in week 6 and it killed the season. ILB is crucial and Borland, who had over 300 stops and over 40 TFLs in a good (and Texans worthy!) program is a nice pick here.

Round 3 Daniel McCullers, DT Tennessee
Okay, I'm not saying he's former Crennell 'vending machine type NT' Ted Washington but, my goodness! He's 6-7 and 350 . He moves well and will fit nicely next to J.J. Watt. If you need a NT, you'll watch the second round on pins and needles and pray he drops to this spot.

Round 4 Cyril Richardson, OT-G Baylor
It's day three and it's time to beef up the offensive line. Yes, you have David Quessenberry and Brennan Williams ready to hit the field. Richardson comes in handy outside and inside and until you really know what you have out of last year's rookies, you must add to the mix.

Round 5 Deion Belue, CB Alabama
You can never have enough, so the Texans strike with a CB here. Belue is a smart DB with great instincts and might lack some of the measurables to go higher. If Phillips Gaines from Rice was still here I would grab him in a heart beat but he's long gone so dip into the Nick Saban pool like you did with Kareem Jackson in '10.

Round 6 Rob Blanchflower, TE Massachusetts
I've never drafted anyone from UMass before (hey, I've never drafted ANYONE before). And some of you might think this is homerism because I used to be their play-by-play guy (ok, maybe a little. But do you see any Canes or Chippewas here?), Blanchflower drops this low because he missed some games and played for a horrid team. But he shows great size and promise. He's 6-4, 260 and had a 7 catch, 130 yard game this season against Western Michigan. He's a project but what are you thinking? It's the sixth round and trying to find blue chip talent is like trying buy batteries the day before a hurricane.

Round 7 Tom Savage, QB Pittsburgh
The Redskins might get a second round pick for Kirk Cousins. The Texans once traded sixth round pick Drew Henson to the Cowboys for a three. These guys are valuable. You need insurance and Savage looks the part of a serviceable NFL passer. Plus, O'Brien watched him work out recently (not that this means much. He would need over 400 draft picks to select everyone he's watched personally).
Well, I like Branchflower and Savage is interesting.

& he's more "fan" than "draftnik"

We shouldn't be picking this apart as if he were some self proclaimed draft expert..... like Kiper & McShay

to be fair I like this one a little more even if he did take Borland a round early instead of OLB like Ford who will be off the board anyway. Trent Murphy would be an excellent choice in the 2nd, has size, production, motor & intelligence Crennel covets out of his OLB. Then push Borland back to round three, McCullers in 4th filter in rest of his picks using compensatory plus OL would actually work for me :)

Re: Vandermock 1.0

I don't want any part of Chris Borland in any round. The guys measurements scream FB in the NFL and though he may have made alot of stops or TFL's in the run heavy Big 10, the NFL has become a passing league and his lack of height, speed, incredibly short arms, and mediocre at best Combine drill numbers tell me that he's a major liability in the passing game. If I want short and slow I'll just keep Sharpton.
