Texans....whaaat happened!

Hey,
Wtf happened to Texans this year? You had such a talented, well rounded team last yr that such a dropoff is insane.I haven't really followed all season..and am shocked to see them in position for #1 pick????
Tried finding answer just looking thru forum, but there's so much doom n gloom and panic that it's hard to know what really happened.
Also, do you think with a top draft pick (qb?) And maybe new headcoach you guys can get right back in afc mix next year? (Kc-like turnaround?) Surely the talent is there..

Re: Texans....whaaat happened!

Lot of opinions about that, but I'll just give you my quick version:

We win the first 2 games against Chargers & Titans. Maybe things weren't great, but we won them. In fact, Schaub led comebacks in both games to win, IIRC.

After that, Schaubie managed to throw pick-6s in 4 games in a row, so we lost them. My opinion is that Schaub's lack of mobility and other factors led him to take un-wise risks on most of those throws, costing us games.

We had some close losses to good teams early in the losing streak, such as Seattle. Games we should've won. Schaub also got injured for a while, and Case Keenum, who in many opinions, outplayed Yates in preseason, took over as the starter on a trial basis. Keenum shined in some ways at first, especially with mobility, extending plays, and making long passes, such as to AJ for TDs. Keenum, however, has had major problems dealing with blitzes and trying to make accurate passes to hot receivers (short & intermediate routes). His height is probably an issue.

While all this has gone on, Cushing was injured early in the season and the D has never been the same. I believe Daniels was also and the offense as a whole has been effected by that some as well. A LOT of guys are not playing as well as they did in the past on both sides of the ball. It's my opinion that there is some serious lack of effort and determination going on, especially on the O-line. The only guys I'm certain are doing their best on this team game in and game out, every play, etc. are Watt, Cushing (if he were on the field, but he's not), AJ, the QBs (who just aren't good enough), probably Myers, probably Brahman (but he's really just a great special teams player that sucks like so many at LB), etc.

Kubiak had a mini-stroke at the end of one game. Pressure. Losing streak. He's on medication(s) now, but I think it might even be in his own best interest to get canned. So far, he has not been back on the sidelines, but has been back at games in the booth.

Through most of this, we have moved the ball well on O and gotten our stops on D. WE SUCK IN THE RED ZONE like nobody's business on both sides of the ball.

Most of us agree that the GM and entire coaching staff need replacing. Yes, the QB too, but we were mostly fans of Keenum for a while. He's still the best we've currently got. I'm still personally not big on firing Phillips, but I agree about Smith, Kubiak, etc.

It's a meltdown. Kubiak has no doubt lost the team, unless we are literally tanking and most of the players are in on it.

Re: Texans....whaaat happened!

Eh, the simple answer is injuries.

Not to play devil's advocate here but if we merely had a healthy Arian Foster and Brian Cushing, I believe we would have won the last five games which were all one score losses.

That's the difference between 2-9 and 7-4, which would have us in first place right now.... And yes, it's that easy really. When we're missing the type of superstars and playmakers the caliber of Foster and Cushing that goes a long way.

On the plus side, if we lose these final five games and end up with the first overall pick in the 2014 draft. That should help us reload rather quickly. If healthy in 2014, we'll be back to a solid 12-4 type of team regardless of the coaching staff. We need the players on the field to get it done. Sort of hard to do that without our defensive captain and most versatile offensive player.

Re: Texans....whaaat happened!

With Kubiak on the hot seat after the 2010 season, Smubiak mortgaged the farm prior to the 2011 season. The BIG spending along with Peyton's broken neck, Jeff Fisher's departure and a favorable schedule enabled the Texans to be much improved. Starting with the 2012 season, payments for the 2011 mortgage loan became due. In order to pay the piper, the Texans began making trips to the Pawn Shop, along with refinancing the mortgage every year just to meet their minimal financial obligations for each season since 2011. As a result their standard of living has declined significantly and Smubiak is about to lose the farm.

or the short version: about what happened to the Falcons.

Key injuries plagued the Falcons as well. They nearly beat the Saints at home in their last game. If healthy they'd probably be a Super Bowl contender just like the Texans, IMO.

So what yall are saying is we have a severe lack of depth on this team. And I would agree that is part of the problem.

The Falcons have very similar problems the Texans have. An inefficient OL, no pass rush. Both have neglected the trenches and those chickens have come home to roost.

The Texans have the best depth that their salary cap can afford, which is not very much.

The simple answer is our probowl qb imploded.

On a side note I refuse to let a coach skate by on the excuse that he had injuries ruined his season. Every team loses important pieces every year. Next year it could be Watt that goes down. You have to have solid backups at critical positions who can do the job if players go down.

Good to have you back, Gronked! In a nutshell, we suck just like you said last year before the playoffs. A lot of people will say we suck because of bad QB, injuries, or whatever. Those are factors, but another issue is our defense is awful and forces no turnovers and gets no pressure. I think our garbage defense is the main problem but we are stuck with stupid Wade because his dad was a houston legend.

So the football gods teased us with 2 seasons of good football, then they realized teasing us wasnt nice. So they let Houston teams do what they generally do, SUCK. Pretty simple.

:wadepalm: Pick 6 , injuries , old disgruntled safeties , bad coaching , bad depth , mismanaging contracts , and no plug and play when you lose players .

It appears we were only imitating a good team these last 2 years and have reverted back to type. But the good news is we have futures on/in Broadway/Hollywood. :truck:

Well, "yes and no" on that one. Yes we have depth issues at a lot of positions. Nobody however has another Brian Cushing or Arian Foster laying around waiting to step in. That rarely happens and usually that backup doesn't hang around too long because he can play for another team. Ben Tate isn't Arian Foster and never will be. He might be better in another system but he's never had the vision in our system to really exploit it. He has great runs and **** runs and not much in between. He'll go somewhere else and be another team's starter.

We lost key cogs in the system, not just starters. We probably could have lost 4-5 other guys (individually) and kept it together. Maybe even any of 7-8 guys. This defense doesn't work without Cushing and Watt. Either of them go down and it's over.

On offense it doesn't work without AJ, Foster, or Maybe Duane Brown. Honestly on the OL we don't have the depth to really take any kind of hit without sucking intensely. Lose one starter (and really, do we even have a starter at RT?) and the line breaks.

HJam72 11-28-2013 11:15 AM

Re: Texans....whaaat happened!

Oh, I dunno. We could lose a "starter" at RT and nobody'd notice.

Gotcha. That many key injuries will kill any team. Throw in schaub implosion and close losses n it all makes sense. Draft right n you'll take division right back from Luck & co.

Please play nice! My pats could really use HFA this year! Early on I def thought we'd lose this game...

<sigh>

Knowing when you're getting trolled is a skill. I hope the bulls don't play nice and end some seasons on Sunday. Maybe that turf will bite another patriot close to the playoffs again.

Schaub/Foster/Cushing were signed to big $$$$ extentions whe nthey were coming off of injuries, Predictably they got hurt again this yr, then Belichick gave the rest of the league a blueprint on how to beat the Texans on both offense and defense.

Combine those things with losing solid depth players in FA and failing to replace them with quality draft picks. Has left the team with major depth issues. Also the lack of accountability in this org is maddening. These are just a few of the things that have finally caught up with the Texans org.

If Schaub were a baseball player he'd be bill Buckner. That's what happened.
