An interview with Coach Joe, his response to the rumblings

Special teams: New faces, returners, criticism

Joe Marciano heard some of the talk.

The longtime Texans special teams coordinator heard plenty of folks criticizing him during last season. Some blamed him for the Texans’ special teams woes and some even called for his job.

“But that’s what happens,” Marciano said. “You give up a play here or there on special teams and ‘the special teams coach stinks!’ But if Arian Foster fumbles on the goal line or Andre dropped a pass … ‘Arian fumbled …’ But when it comes to special teams … ‘fire the coach!’ That’s what happens.”

Rest of the piece here.

He has a point... Where was the media?

Quote:

Marciano said what really bothered him was that no one in the media asked him about the problems during last season. He pointed out that the Texans played 22 games in 2012 (preseason, regular season and playoffs combine) and media members didn’t ask him about the special teams struggles.

“I don’t duck the media,” he said. “Nobody wanted to talk to me.

Poor tackling, spacing, inventiveness what do you mean nobody wants to talk with you about it? Sounds more like Bob is being groomed as his replacement in couple years.

Coach, AJ drops the ball or Foster fumbles and they still had a great season. Your team sucked and that's on you. Defense lost players or players missed plays but Phillips pieced it together and did well. You need to teach your guys how to block and tackle. You know those "basics".

Quit your whining and do your freakin' job, coach. This is pathetic.

Yep, and he wasn't able to coach a team to block for 2 of the best returners in the game last season, Trindon Holliday and Jacoby Jones, he also has a proven returner in D. Manning available, and can't get past the 20 yard line with any of them.

Only thing I can think is that he had some good excuse because for several years now the level of talent we've had at our disposal has been unquestionable, all the gear and no idea.

The last two PR and KR we cut had pretty damn successful seasons while we wallowed as the worst unit in the league. Hmmm...

See, that's the problem and it doesn't take a lot of insight into the finer points of special teams play to understand that. They were bad all year long and they have been bad for some time. Guys leave here and literally blow up into Pro Bowlers. This isn't "We missed a tackle or gave up a play here and there". They stink and they've stunk for a good long time.

Joe needs to turn this around or find somewhere else to ply his trade.

trindon did have a pro bowl preseason here in fairness. its not like he didn't show anything and suddenly blew up and nobody saw it coming. its just he was wasted here with the blocking he was getting and we needed the roster spot

Pro Bowl preseason? This could be the most ridiculous thing I've ever read on here.

Marciano's interview disgusted me as a fan. Dude should NEVER mention the names of A.J. or Foster when trying to defend his horrible unit.

This speaks volumes about our front office that he is still on the staff. Seriously, McNair/Kubiak/Smith:

Texans’ special teams = worst in the NFL in 2012.

It's not complicated, but the Texans are over-thinking it and certainly not acting like other championship potential teams treat FAILURES.

The Ravens fire their OC in the middle of the season during a playoff push. The Texans cannot even fire a coach with the last place unit in the league during an off-season.

Hoping for things as fans is one thing, but honestly expecting them to go to the Super Bowl when they coddle failure is simply unrealistically delusional.

The problem is weve have only ever been average at PR coverage and returning and we got worse on kick returning once the rules changed. JJ and Holliday did BETTER after they left Houston.

Jones KR average went up about 10 yards and his PR average stayed the same.

Holliday same thing. PR stays the same but KR goes up significantly.

The fact is Marciano has NOT adapted to the kickoff return rules.

I don't understand why Coach Joe hasn't ever figured out what to do about the bolded. Next, he'll tell us the players just have to execute...

I sympathized with Marciano because I felt like he was a bit unfairly criticized somewhat. But that snippet from the interview put me off. Andre and Arian have 0 to do with your st unit. And wade, kubiak and hell even McNair have all taken some harsh words.

For him to pull the woe is me card makes me believe he is on his way out. New guy is in training.

Pretty childish tbh. It's like a kid getting got and trying to tattle on someone else to remove the attention from themselves.

Dude, even if you don't think it's all on you (I don't think it is actually), you don't come out and cry. Just a, you know we were bad last year and we'll be better this year response will suffice.

I will give Marciano credit. He doesn't duck media at all, and will give you straightforward answers to things.

Me personally, I never asked him a question in-season because I do not attend in-season practices.

As for the AJ/Arian point, I think he is just saying that mistakes on special teams are magnified more than other phases of the game because there are fewer ST plays.

I expect a bounce back season. Do not know about Bullock because I haven't seen him kick in front of people this year. Know this week, they pulled out the skinny goal posts that they now use. It is like practicing putting with a smaller golf cup...when you put into a regular size one again, then it feels huge.

& even in this article he doesn't mention any problems or issues with his special teams, what's being done to address them, or anything other than the media not asking question he most likely wouldn't have answered anyway.

That said, I still don't know if firing coach Joe would have been the way to go, or not. I do know we've had good special teams in the past under Coach Joe. I do know Coach Joe did not have the people he would have liked to have had on SpecialTeams.

What happened to McMannis? He was the best gunner we had in 2011..... not on the 2012 team. Ball was a good gunner, but he missed a few games. We lost Jacoby, they cut Trindon, we can't get our kicker or our punter on the field, instead we're going with the second/third options.

& if we're losing our better special teams players for better players on defense or offense... & again, coach Joe is having to deal with what he gets... We used to carry a lot of WRs & DBs who would play special teams.... & TEs.... but now, Braman (who should be one of the slower players on special teams) is our special teams star.

If I'm Kubiak & Coach Joe has been telling me, "No problem, I can take this bunch of crap you're giving me & turn them into one of the better special teams units in the league." Then yes, he deserves to be fired.

If Coach Joe has been saying, "Now wait a minute, you can't get rid of X, Y, & Z... you're leaving me with nothing... I'll do my best, but don't say I didn't warn you." That's a different story.

If you look around the league (& I haven't) & their special teams are made up of the same types of players... TEs & LBs..... are we asking linemen to get down field & make plays other teams are asking WRs & DBs to make?

I just feel like we used to have more TEs & WRs on the team & they used to play special teams.
