Texans special teams coordinator Joe Marciano joined “Texans All Access” on Tuesday on SportsRadio 610, giving insightful comments on the competition spots in the special teams unit.
The entire interview is worth a listen — Marciano also discussed the upcoming “First Down Dads” event on June 9 — but here’s a snapshot of what he said:

Kick Returner
Asked about fourth-round draft pick Keshawn Martin’s return skills, Marciano said wide receivers Juaquin Iglesias and Trindon Holliday are also in the mix to return kicks for the Texans in 2012. The “sleeper of the group,” he said, is Davin Meggett, an undrafted rookie running back from Maryland and the son of former Pro Bowl returner Dave Meggett. “When I first got in the league, his dad torched me back in the day,” Marciano said. “His dad was a dynamite returner. He can do both punts and kickoffs.” Marciano said Holliday, one of the fastest players in college football history, “can be a dynamite returner in this league,” adding: “I would hate to play against him. But the thing about him here, he has to make it as a receiver. We don’t have the luxury just to carry an extra guy (solely as a returner).”

2011′s Best Performances: Centers

Here are the Top 10 center performances from 2011:

10t. Alex Mack, Cleveland Browns: Week 15 vs. Arizona (+4.0)
10t. Chris Myers, Houston Texans: Week 15 vs. Carolina (+4.0)
The Browns and Texans centers did enough in Week 15 to both earn a tie for the 10th spot, with Myers excelling against the Panthers and Mack enjoying himself against the Cardinals. Both men gave up a pressure (though Mack had his nullified by a penalty), but their run blocking was superb a they did a great job of getting to the second level. Just ask Paris Lenon and Dan Connor who were on the receiving end of the efforts of these two men.

9. Brian De La Puente, New Orleans Saints: Week 9 vs. Tampa Bay (+4.1)
‘BDP’ started the season as a backup to one-time perennial Pro-Bowler Olin Kreutz, and not many Saints fans would have been that excited with him replacing the former Bear. But De La Puente didn’t just fill in serviceably for Kreutz, he offered a big upgrade, and this was extremely evident against the Bucs in Week 9. Perfect in pass protection, he had no problems besting Brian Price on a regular basis.

8. Samson Satele, Oakland Raiders: Week 15 vs. Detroit (+4.2)
The problem with Satele is you never quite know what you’re going to get. When he’s on form, he has talent that many centers in the league would struggle to replicate, though he too often fails to deliver. That wasn’t a problem in Week 15, with the Raider not allowing a single pressure and not grading negatively once in the run game.

7. Lyle Sendlein, Arizona Cardinals: Week 2 at Washington (+4.3)
While the Cardinals’ line has often flattered to deceive, Sendlein has turned himself from undrafted free agent into one of the league’s more solid centers. Against Washington in Week 2 he had some fun against Barry Cofield on the nose, and showed some nice athleticism to get to the second level and open up some running lanes by neutralizing London Fletcher and Rocky McIntosh. Perfect in pass pro and even recovered a fumble to boot.

6. John Sullivan, Minnesota Vikings: Week 8 at Carolina (+4.5)
After spending a large part of his early career as something of a liability, a healthy Sullivan finally showed what he was capable of in 2011. The shining example of this came in Week 8 against the Panthers where in addition to being perfect in pass he won his battles with the Panthers defensive tackles. Good day.

4t. Nick Mangold, New York Jets: Week 14 vs. Kansas City (+4.6)
The only entry from one of this generation’s premier centers. Mangold battled injury at points in the 2011 season, but he looked 100% when the Chiefs came into town. Kelly Gregg is never the easiest player to go head-to-head with, but Mangold comprehensively won nearly all of their battles (Gregg earned just one positive grade versus Mangold). When he wasn’t busy bullying the Chiefs’ nose tackle, he was showing some good agility pulling on screen blocks and getting hands on linebackers. At his best here.

4t. Samson Satele, Oakland Raiders: Week 3 vs. New York Jets (+4.6)
You don’t often see a center do so well against Sione Pouha and Mike Devito, but other than getting beaten badly once by Devito, Satele enhanced his reputation with a strong display. Giving up no pressure and winning both in the trenches and at the second level, the Raider was exceptional.

3. Scott Wells, Green Bay Packers: Week 1 vs. New Orleans (+5.1)
Wells’ brilliance in Week 1 was highlighted for all to see as he manhandled Shaun Rogers at the goal line with 11:52 to go in the fourth quarter, but his game was about so much more than that. The Saints got plenty of use out of Rogers, Sedrick Ellis and Aubrayo Franklin but none of them were a match for Wells who was fired up for the season opener.

2. Chris Myers, Houston Texans: Week 9 vs. Cleveland (+5.9)
His taunting penalty didn’t go down well but his run blocking (and pass protection) did. In addition to not giving up a single pressure, Myers went to work on the big bodies of the Browns up front. Phil Taylor had the hardest time of all, but Ahtyba Rubin and Brian Schaefering were others who found out how in the zone Myers was at this stage of the season. A practically flawless performance.

1. Chris Myers, Houston Texans: Week 1 vs. Indianapolis (+8.0)
Myers couldn’t have played much better than he did in Week 1 and while he was the league’s top center in 2011, so it proved. That owed to a tremendous performance, the likes of which you just don’t see often. It didn’t matter if it was Antonio Johnson, Drake Nevis, Fili Moala or anyone the Colts tried on the interior of their defensive line; Myers dominated them to such an extent he achieved the best grade of the year by any center.

Bored at work and I was doing some digging for fun. Our D had the luxury of facing the Jags, Colts, and Titans offenses 2 xs each last year. They had the #21st, 28th, and 28th ranked scoring teams in NFL last year according to NFL.com.

The good news is we get to face those same offenses next year, but they are working to improve just like everyone else. When looking back we faced an average of the 19th ranked scoring teams over 16 games last year.

The best offenses we faced in 2011 (weighted in ppg):
#2 New Orleans - 34.2 ppg / 467 ypg - We allowed 40 pts / 454 yards
#5 Carolina - 25.4 ppg / 389 ypg - We allowed 28 /316 yards
#7 Atlanta - 25.1 ppg / 376 ypg - We allowed 10 pts / 337 yards
#12 Baltimore - 23.6 ppg / 338 ypg - We allowed 29 & 20 / 402 and 227 yds
#16 Oakland - 22.4 ppg / 380 ypg - We allowed 25 / 278 yards

The most balanced offenses we faced were Balt, Oak, and Carolina. *All 3 were losses in the regular season.

Analysis: We did a very fine job of limiting NO until Brees became unstoppable. Carolina, was it just one of those days? Atlanta, one of our best defensive games.... but how much of a threat was Atl anyway? Baltimore, much better the second time around and proved we can take a punch, keep standing, and hit em right back; was our truly earned respect game imo. Oakland was a FG fest by them and a fluke win if you ask me.

2012:
I know its not ideal to compare 2011 scoring stats and forecast the next season. We are scheduled to face the 17th ranked scoring teams in the NFL over 16 games next year. But when looking at the top 5 offenses we will face, its a safe assumption these guys will certainly be gunning again and appears to be a much more potent lineup for us overall.

#1 Green Bay - # 3 passing attack
#3 New England - # 2 passing attack
#4 Detroit - # 4 passing attack
#12 Baltimore - # 19 passing attack
#13 NY Jets - # 21 passing attack

Other notables:
Denver - Top rushing attack from last year, added Manning
Minnesota - Adrian Peterson/ # 4 rushing attack. Nuff Said
Chicago - Top 10 rushing attack.
Tenn - CJ? Locker? Britt? How improved will they be?
Indy - Get them 2 of last 3 games with Luck having almost full season at this point.

Side note: We really dont face a true balanced offense such as our selves all year according to last years stats. Either a top passing or a top rushing offense. Hard to find a true balanced offense in the lineup.

That is 3 top 5 passing attacks, and 3 top 10 rushing attacks we will face in 2012. Note: We also faced 3 top 10 rushing attacks last year.

SO! How much of a drop off can we expect in our ranking if any? Was the leap to a top defense in the NFL greatly helped by the overall schedule we played? Will we be able to stay in the top 10 this year? Going to be a very very interesting season for us, on this side of the ball alone.

April 1, we told you that the USFL is back. We then told you that, no, it’s not an April Fool’s Day gag.

The four-letter football league recently announced that it will return to action next March, with eight teams and a 14-game season.

Hall of Famer Fred Biletnikoff will consult on football operations, according to the Associated Press.

It’s not a revival of the prior league, per se. The name as been purchased and it’s a new operation, with the league itself employing the coaches and the players — and with no effort to compete with the NFL. Instead, the goal is to provide a complementary, developmental, offseason alternative.

And it could work. If it does, however, an enterprising lawyer or two may file a concussion lawsuit on behalf of those who played in the original version of the league.
