The NFL is apparently willing to try anything to fix the Pro Bowl. Earlier this week Albert Breer of NFL Network reported that the league is discussing game show-like elements, such as paying out prizes during play, in order to “make it so every single minute of the game has some sort of thing that’s going to keep fans interested and engaged.” Breer also said the NFL doesn’t “feel the need to keep the integrity of what a normal football game is.”

You know things are bad when the strict, image-obsessed NFL is willing to tweak its flawless product. (There’s also talk of designating AFC and NFC team captains, who would then pick their teams. But let’s not go crazy here.) The status of this rumored game show scenario is yet to be determined, but if they decide to press their luck (and perhaps be more proactive in controlling the pet population), the rules would more or less write themselves.

Former Bears star retires after 13 seasons

Before Brian Urlacher starred in the NFL for 13 seasons as the Chicago Bears' middle linebacker, he was a high school wide receiver and college safety. It should be no surprise then that the trademark of his Hall of Fame career was how he helped take his pro position to a high level against the pass.

Urlacher's decision to fade into the sunset on Wednesday means he will be enshrined on the same summer day in 2018 as another dominant turn-of-the-century linebacker—Ray Lewis.

In many ways, Urlacher and Lewis were old-school players. They were relentless, intense, hard-tackling team leaders who played for only one team. They both channeled the man who most still consider to be the best middle linebacker of all time—Bears great Dick Butkus. While Urlacher had a direct tie to his franchise lineage, Lewis lived up to that legacy with own brand of intimidation.

But make no mistake, Urlacher and Lewis also were built to thrive in the modern pass-happy era, where making a seamless transition from the upfield pass rush to downfield coverage is just as critical as laying the wood against the run.

Full story

Should be one of the more interesting competitions in camp. I think the fans will definitely be paying attention to this battle...

But I was listening to the 610 and John Lopez brought up an interesting point. He contends that there's 0 chance Keenum beats out Yates. He said that even if Keenum outplays Yates, you're not going to have the team come out and directly say Keenum is the #2.

His reasoning is that if that were to happen, you'd have an immediate QB controversy/a bunch of pressure on Schaub. Right now it's Yates vs Keenum...If Keenum is the back up....all of a sudden he's one spot away from starter. As the third string QB he doesn't pose any immediate threat to Schaub. There's no "circus" type atmosphere with die hard Coog fans or Keenum fans or just fans of local talent frothing at the mouth for Keenum to make that one last jump to the starting line-up. With how Schaub finished last year, if Keenum were his back up I do think it'd be a big fuss at Schaub's first mistake or bad game.

Anyways, this number 2 QB competition will be interesting to follow. Lots around here do believe that Case has the talent to at least be a back up.

Quote:

One of the first things that jumps out is the voice. Case Keenum's booming voice is back. It fills up the indoor practice bubble in the first session of the Houston Texans' rookie mini camp, leaving little doubt who's huddle this is.

The former University of Houston legend is back in command, doing what he does best, grabbing the shot much of the NFL was reluctant to give him. He flings on-the-money out passes to the sideline with seemingly little effort. He hits rookie receiver DeAndre Hopkins deep. He even overthrows Hopkins a few times (so much for that "weak" arm). He gets the offense in and out of the huddle quickly, his barked out play calls impossible to miss.

Call it the evolution of a pro quarterback. Yes, a pro quarterback.

The doubts that Case Keenum — who treated all-time NCAA passing records like mere speed bumps at UH — can play at the NFL level have been more than a little ridiculous from the beginning. Art Briles, Kevin Sumlin and now Gary Kubiak have all shown belief in this once unheralded prospect from West Texas. Those are three coaches who've proven they know a little something about the quarterback position.
1. Hopkins: Rookie wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins made a strong first impression in rookie mini-camp last weekend, but that was against other rookies, many who were with the Texans on a tryout basis.

Now, the first-round draft pick from Clemson will be practicing with Andre Johnson, catching passes from quarterback Matt Schaub and going against cornerbacks such as Pro Bowler Johnathan Joseph and Kareem Jackson.

The Texans expect Hopkins to make a significant contribution from the get-go as a rookie. He showed “extremely special” ball skills in the rookie mini-camp. The Texans would certainly like to see more of the same as Hopkins practices with his veteran teammates.

Under the new terms of the contract, Manning will still earn the $40 million in guaranteed money over the next two seasons, but the payouts of those amounts has been tweaked.
Instead of earning $20 million in fully guaranteed base salaries in 2013 and 2014, Manning received a $10 million salary advance and his base salaries in 2013 and 2014 have been lowered to $15 million in each season. The $10 million salary advance is treated like a signing bonus and will be prorated over the next four seasons, reducing Manning's cap number from $20 million to $17.5 million in both 2013 and 2014.
However, the downside to the cap savings the next two seasons is that Manning's cap number will increase by $2.5 million, going from $19 million to $21.5 million, in both 2015 and 2016 as the Broncos will have veered, slightly, from the "pay as you go" approach they had been taking with the 37-year-old quarterback.

When quarterback Wes Lunt announced he was going to transfer from Oklahoma State, both he and the school went out of their way to handle it in the classiest way possible.
Lunt thanked Oklahoma State, and Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy thanked Lunt. Lunt was a highly touted recruit and was a starter to begin the 2012 season as a true freshman, but he dealt with injuries and it was time to move on. Oklahoma State had a logjam at quarterback after the spring. Everyone seemed on board with him moving on and doing what was best for his future.
That makes Oklahoma State's subsequent significant transfer restrictions on Lunt so odd, and infuriating as well.
According to the Tulsa World, Lunt will not be allowed by Oklahoma State to transfer to a school in the Big 12, SEC or to Southern Mississippi (whose new coach, Todd Monken, was previously Oklahoma State's offensive coordinator).

Pretty crappy of OSU. What are they afraid of? If they think the kid is that good, he'd probably be starting for them.
