OK, the Draft is over and the Mini Camps and OTA's are about to start. I'm already looking forward and trying to guess the 53 man the Roster. Let's get started!

Offense
QB's (2) Matt Schaub, T.J. Yates

WR's (6) A. Johnson, DeAndre Hopkins (R), LeStar Jean, Kevin Martin, Alan Bonner (R), Jeff Maehl or (UDFA)

TE's (3) Owen Daniels, Garrett Graham, Phillip Supernaw or Ryan Griffin (R)

RB's (3) Arian Foster, Ben Tate, (UDFA)

FB's (2) Greg Jones, Tyler Clutts

OT's (4) Duane Brown, Ryan Harris, Derek Newton (Health ?),
Brennan Williams (R)

OC (1) Chris Myers

OG (4) Wade Smith, Brandon Brooks, Ben Jones (Will also be backup Center), David Quessenberry (R)

Total Offensive Players 25

Defense
DE's (4) Antonio Smith, J.J. Watt, Jared Crick, Tim Jamison

NT's (3) Earl Mitchell, Terrell McClain, Chris Jones (R)

OLB's (5) Whitney Mercilus, Bryan Braman, Brooks Reed (Will probably play ILB a little to a lot.), Sam Montgomery (R), Trevardo Williams (R)

ILB's (3) Brian Cushing, Darryl Sharpton, Tim Dobbins

CB's (5) Kareem Jackson, Johnathan Joseph, Brice McCain, Brandon Harris, Roc Carmichael

S's (5) Ed Reed, Daniel Manning, D.J. Swearinger (R), Shiloh Keo, Eddie Pleasant

Total Defensive Players 25

Special Teams
K's (1) Randy Bullock

P's (1) Shane Lechler

LS's (1) Jon Weeks

Total Special Teams Players 3

PUP (1) DeVier Posey (Depending on Posey's injury he could go on IR.)

As far as the Practice Squad I don't have a feel for the players yet, but Ryan Griffin could be on it if he can't beat out Supernaw and Chris Jones could also be on it if they decide to go with only 2 NT's. They will probably keep another of the 4 UDFA RB's they have and probably a WR or 2 as well as another LBer. It's hard to pin down who will make it which should make for a lot of fun during the preseason.

Well, there it is. What do you think?

I hope someone can beat Keo out...

Also I don't think mahael makes the team unless there is injury or unless he beats out LeStar Jean. I think the Griffen, the TE we drafted makes the team and I think Roc Carmichael is going to be in for a he'll of a battle for that last cb spot.

Is that 53 players?

Ha ha ha! I knew that was coming. If they only go with 4 Safeties he could be beaten out by Pleasant.

I think you're mostly on target. It should be interesting, since I think a lot of those positions are open to competition at the bottom. Here are the things I'm thinking:
- I think they keep 3 QBs, though we'll see how they look in preseason.
- Not sure they keep 6 WRs. There are only 2 (AJ, Hopkins) that I see as sure keepers (as well as Posey) - I could see any of the others not making the roster, and so I'm not sure that 4 of them will stick. I would not be surprised to see them keep only 5, with a couple more on the PS. If they expect Posey back, and if it works (I forget the rules), I wouldn't be surprised to see 6, with that 6th one going to the PS when Posey returns.
- I could see 4 TEs and only 1 FB (especially if they go with only 5 WR)
- Would be a little surprised at 3 NTs, and would think they might drop down to 2. In place, I'd guess either some other LB prospect (still feels way too thin at ILB), a return specialist (might be the extra DB or WR), or that 3rd QB.
- I'd like to see Keo replaced, but they seem to like him, so he'll probably be there. But, I think we might lose a safety (Pleasant) in favor of another CB or a returner, if we don't lose one of the NTs.

There are still a lot of moves to be made. I expect some more vets to be picked up. But with what we've got...

Offense: 24

RB - Foster, Tate, Winn
FB - Jones, Clutz
WR - AJ, Hopkins, Martin, Jean, Bonner
TE - Daniels, Graham, Griffin
OL - Brown, Williams, Harris, Quessenberry, Brooks, Jones, Smith, Myers

Defense: 26
DE - Watt, Smith, Crick, Jamison
DT - Mitchell, Jones, McClain
OLB - Mercilus, Montgomery, Williams, Braman
ILB - Cushing, Reed, Sharpton, Dobbins, Tuggle
CB - KJ, JJo, McCain, Harris, Carmichael
S - Reed, Manning, Swearinger, Pleasant, Keo

ST: 3
LS - Weeks
K - Bullock
P - Lechler

PUP - Devier Posey, Fig Newton

I thought about the 3 QB's but Keenum has another year of PS eligibility, and I don't think Kubes will want to use a valuable roster spot on a back up QB he can stash on the PS. Now if Keenum improves enough to beat out Yates then that changes the situation.

The WR situation is tough. They carried 6 last season for awhile with Holliday as their KR. This year I think Martin will be the KR and Bonner will step in as the PR. This area still seems thin even after drafting 2 WR's. I don't think Posey will be back until after mid season at best, and even then he may not ever come back 100%. A lot depends on how bad his achilles tear was. I just hope AJ can stay healthy the full season again. They may only carry 5 with Maehl being the odd man out. I don't think he has any more PS time left.

They carried only 2 TE's last year with Casey being a 3rd if necessary. They will carry at least 3 this year and you may be right with a 4th. I know it hurt them last season when GG went down with injuries and they couldn't run their 2 TE sets very well. I think they even put an extra OT in there as a TE a few times late in the season on certain packages. If they carry 4 I guess Ryan Griffin will be one of them. I just don't know how ready he or Supernaw are for the NFL and I can't see Kubes using a roster spot on 2 guys at the same position who haven't played a down in the NFL. One yes. Two no. Either one could end up on the PS if they only carry 3 TE.

You're right about carrying 3 NT's. I just wonder if they would risk putting Jones on the PS and possibly losing him to another team. They are thin at the position already and I think Hunter may go to the PS too, so I'm not sure what they're thinking is right now. My guess is Mitchell will start (obviously) and Terrell McClain will back him up since he has some NFL experience and was a 3rd round draft pick. If Chris Jones can't beat out McClain, do they give him a 3rd roster spot or do they try to stash him and Hunter on the PS? I know they are high on Hunter and he will definitely be on the PS at the very minimum. So, I guess this comes down to a battle between McClain and Jones if they only keep 2 NTs.

You're also right about being too thin at ILB with only 3 on the roster now. That's where Reed comes into play as an ILB, and my guess is they will ultimately carry 4. Now whether that 4th ILB is Reed, or a FA pickup, or one of the UDFA's I don't know yet. It will all have to play itself out on the field.

We picked up his contract when we made the trade with the Bears.
There's no guaranteed money involved so Clutts can be cut anytime without affecting the salary cap.

I kept Clutz on the roster because:

1) Jones is already kinda old. He's not the future at that position. If Clutz has talent for it, they could use this time to train him up.
2) Clutz plays on ST.

They might not keep him. Over the course of his tenure, I think Kubiak has had more seasons with multiple FBs on the team than seasons without.

I guess it depends on if he shows that he has the ability and ball security in camp. But I agree, that it could be Bonner. If Bonner is good enough we can nickname him the red-rocket when we play in battle red.

But then again, what do I know?

The main reason I think we keep 2 FB's is Special Teams, but if Clutts is not much on STs, then they'll probably go with only one. Most positions that aren't a starter hinge on how well they play STs, and most NFL FB's, if not all, have to play STs. For most it's half their value to the team.

I'm taking a shot at this... along with some explanations.

OFFENSE (25)

QB: Matt Schaub, TJ Yates - I think we still go with only two on the active roster, with Case in PS

RB: Arian Foster, Ben Tate, UDFA - sorry, I don't know enough about the UDFA RB's to take a guess

FB: Greg Jones - Clutts is a bubble guy that will have to show up in STs

WR: Andre Johnson, DeAndre Hopkins, Keshawn Martin, Lestar Jean, Alan Bonner - biggest question is who will be cut to make room for Posey when he returns? Jean or Bonner?

TE: Owen Daniels, Garrett Graham, Ryan Griffin, Phillip Supernaw - Supernaw makes the squad for his ST contributions

OT: Duane Brown, Derek Newton, Ryan Harris, Brennan Williams, Andrew Gardner - with the Newton injury, and youth of Williams, I believe we go 5 deep at OT. Quessenberry & Mondek are on PS

OG: Wade Smith, Brandon Brooks, Cody White - Texans are high on Cody White and don't want to risk losing him on PS

C: Chris Myers, Ben Jones - of course, Jones will be in competition for the starting RG spot

DEFENSE (25)

DE: JJ Watt, Antonio Smith, Tim Jamison, Jared Crick - pretty easy

NT: Earl Mitchell, Chris Jones - lets pray Chris Jones is better than we think

OLB: Brooks Reed, Whitney Mercilus, Bryan Braman, Sam Montgomery, Trevardo Williams - Trevardo makes the roster due to his ST play, and Reed stays at OLB

ILB: Brian Cushing, Tim Dobbins, Darryl Sharpton, FA - I still expect a FA to be signed here

CB: Jonathan Joseph, Kareem Jackson, Brice McCain, Brandon Harris, Roc Carmichael - Roc is a bubble guy I think will barely make the squad

S: Ed Reed, Danieal Manning, DJ Swearinger, Shiloh Keo, Eddie Pleasant - sorry guys, Keo will be on the roster again. coaches like him for some reason?

SPECIAL TEAMS (3)

K: Randy Bullock

P: Shane Lechler

LS: Jon Weeks

KR: Danieal Manning - going a bit out of the limb here, but does the drafting of Swearinger give us this luxury? a shame to have such a gifted returner not put to use

PR: Keshawn Martin - will be in a battle with Bonner for this spot

I think Quessenberry would be snatched up if we tried to send him to the PS. Don't see that happening. Somebody's getting cut or we'll find a way to stash one on the IR like we seem to do with a mystery injury every year.

Again, our ILB situation is clearly the weakest on the team. I still think it's plausible Trevardo might be moved inside...who knows, but something's got to be done

I think that's about right. Maybe they are thinking Keenum will impress someone this offseason & won't make it to the PS, but still not "Good enough" to dedicate a roster spot to. Then Klien would make the PS & he'll have been with the team since rookie camp.

McGee, the only way I see him sticking with the team, is if he beats out Yates.

Agree about Quess.
I don't think Gardner and White are locks.
Will the Texans carry 4 TEs? I don't know.
Supernaw or any other TE would have to impress the heck out of Kubiak for that to happen.
I think there's a chance that we carry six receivers instead;
Maybe a veteran move to solidify the WR corp before the season starts - I surely hope so.

Well, we know it won't include Rashad Butler

The Cleveland Browns have signed free agent offensive lineman Rashad Butler to a one-year contract.

Butler spent the past six seasons with the Texans. He was on injured reserve all of 2012 with a triceps injury, and he played in just two games in 2011 because of an elbow injury.

Yeah, I tend to agree about Quessenberry. I'd be too worried that someone would snatch him up. Still surprised he was there in the 6th round though I do wonder if maybe he was overvalued by the Texans (and me too). Time will tell.

As for moving Trevardo to ILB, I had the same thoughts after we drafted him since he is somewhat small (6'1" 240 lbs) for an OLB in a 3-4. But, he's so fast I think the Texans will keep him at OLB to utilize his speed. They may fill the ILB spot with a FA like Dansby (Who will be out of their price range.) or Larry Grant from the 49ers. They also could stick with what they have in the UDFA bunch. Who knows, they may find a gem.

Here's a link to an article I saw on NFL.com about Dansby; http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap1000000168293/article/karlos-dansby-says-he-has-interest-from-jets-texans-falcons

Offense (24)
Quarterback: Matt Schaub, T.J. Yates, Case Keenum
...

Runningback: Arian Foster, Ben Tate, Cierre Wood

The Texans go with Cierre Wood here to replace Ben Tate in 2014. Wood has been a good addition to the team at a bargain basement price via the free agent market. Considered a draftable Wood has shown some positive signs to make a good start to a career in Houston. There is still preseason games to be played, but Wood has a strangle hold on the 3rd running back spot.

Fullback: Greg Jones

Most underrated signing for the Texans this off-season, Jones will make a big difference for this offense.

Tight End: Owen Daniels, Garrett Graham, Ryan Griffin

The youth of the Texans at the position are in place with Garrett Graham and Ryan Griffin. Owen Daniels is still a top offensive weapon for the Texans and this year could be a big season for the 8 year veteran, and possibly one of his last.

Wide Receiver: Andre Johnson, DeAndre Hopkins, Keshawn Martin, Lestar Jean, Alan Bonner

The strongest wide receiving group top to bottom the Texans have ever assembled and this is without the injured DeVier Posey. With the addition of DeAndre Hopkins the combinations the Texans can put on the field personnel wise will be fun to watch for the upcoming season. Rookie wide receiver Alan Bonner and second year Keshawn Martin are two to watch for the offense, both have shown some signs of making the offense more explosive.

Offensive Tackles: Duane Brown, Derek Newton, David Quessenberry, Brennan Williams

Derek Newton and rookie Brennan Williams should both be healthy during training camp and ease some minds on the right tackle situation. If they are not healthy or have a set back, expect the Texans to keep Ryan Harris and use rookie David Quessenberry at right tackle to fill the void. If both Newton and Williams can remain healthy expect a rotation at right tackle for the second season in a row.

Offensive Guards: Wade Smith, Ben Jones, Brandon Brooks, Cody White
...

Center: Chris Myers

Still one of the best in the business, and this season should be no different.

PUP: DeVier Posey
...

Defense (26)
Defensive End: J.J. Watt, Antonio Smith, Jared Crick, Tim Jamison, Delano Johnson
...

Nose Tackle: Earl Mitchell, Terrell McClain

Terrell McClain looks good in in the small sample size and has the versatility to also help at defensive end. He looks exactly like what the defense looks for in nose tackles, a quick 300 lbs. body that can play low. Right now he has the edge heading into training camp over drafted rookie Chris Jones and second year player David Hunter.

Outside Linebacker: Brooks Reed, Whitney Mercilus, Bryan Braman, Sam Montgomery, Trevardo Williams

A new look position group that is much faster than last year’s group. Brooks Reed needs to stay on the edge for the Texans to give the defense an edge presence that knows how to play the run. Reed will also have the versatility to be used on the inside if needed. The defense will be much faster on the field with Whitney Mericlus, Sam Montgomery and Trevardo Williams. This will be a new trait that the defense did not have last season with starters Connor Barwin and Reed.

Inside Linebackers: Brian Cushing, Darryl Sharpton, Tim Dobbins, Cameron Collins
...

Cornerback: Johnathan Joseph, Kareem Jackson, Brice McCain, Brandon Harris, Roc Carmichael, A.J. Bouye

The deepest position group for the Texans and they are a seasoned group. Very little turnover is expected from last season, just expect the addition of another young player in A.J. Bouye. Bouye has been impressive for the Texans in the early part of the off-season and he will have time to develop behind the veteran group.

Safety: Ed Reed, Danieal Manning, D.J. Swearinger, Shiloh Keo
...

Specialty (3)
Kicker: Randy Bullock
Punter: Shane Lechler
Long Snapper: Jon Weekshttp://www.stateofthetexans.com/texans-53-man-roster-version-2-0/

What makes him so certain? While it's entirely possible that I missed some news, I don't recall seeing anything that said any of the current RB UDFAs were head & shoulders above the others such that they had a "stranglehold" on the #3 RB spot.

Hes not, the blogger is just making a prediction. I think he's way off on Ryan Harris not making this team. Probably the opening day starter @RT.

I am big fan of Cierre and mocked him but I would not be surprised if he is on PS. If Tate is healthy, he should be a great #2.

What makes him so certain?...His opinions are unique in the small crowd that actually see the minicamps & OTAs. Just dead season fodder until training camp.

I hope we sign a vet Nose, ILB and WR. If Hopkins does not have the rookie year we all hope, it may be a long season. I am not as concerned with ILb as I am with Mitchell at the nose with basically no one behind him.

Desmond Bishop is free...just sayin.

The problem with trying to stash Case on the PS again is I don't think he will clear waivers this time and then we will be left with McGee? Other teams are aware of what Kubes has been saying about him and how he has improved from last year. I think he's on our roster or he'll be on another team.

There was just a whole lot of that exact sentiment last season. It didn't happen then and my gut says if he lands on the PS again, that's where he'll safely land. JMO, of course.

2010 & 2011 very good stats & supposedly ready for this season after hammy and 28 YOA $3.5m for '13 & '14.

Do we have anything to trade?

Rip, since he is cut we don't have to trade anything but do need to create cap space which can be done. I would like to have him.

Honestly, I think both will be on the 53 this year...

Honestly, I think both will be on the 53 this year...Agreed. Yates is a solid backup and could be a starter for someone after another season. Good news is Yates has 2 seasons left at less than $700K each making him a tantalyzing chess piece if he gets better. Wonder if someone would give two seconds for him after 2013?

Is Yates going to come in and beat New England with 300 yds passing, 3 TD's and no INT's?

I was joking mainly. That is what Schaub did to grab trade attention and ultimately the 2 2nd's.

The Falcons lost that game 31-28. Matt did play an outstanding game though. His record as a starter with the Falcons was 0-2

I'm not seeing this. Now if Case comes in during preseason and "lights it up" and looks head and shoulders above TJ, then I could possibly see it. But, it's going to have to take an awful lot for Case to jump ahead of TJ and that's what I think will have to happen for him to make the roster. I still think he ends up on the PS and I think he'll be safe there for another year.

If Kevin Sumlin were coming into the league I would think that would be a concern. If not Sumlin, one of the offensive coaches from UH when Keenum was there or one of our coaches who worked closely with Keenum while he was here.

I don't think there are (m)any coaches in the NFL that fits the bill.

There are way too many QBs out there for these coaches to fall in love with. I doubt anyone but us are "excited" about Keenum's "progress"

That said, if Kubiak cuts him again, then Kubiak doesn't think much of him. Good enough to keep around for JjWatt to chase during practice, but little more.
