So we have 16th, 27th, 30th, 33rd picks in Rd. 6

No way 4 6th rounders make this team so I say take chances onthese picks

The Pencil Neck
04-27-2013, 02:19 PM
Yeah, I know. But there was still some good value players left in the 5th I would have liked.

And they may well still be there in the 6th.

I smell another trade???

could be . . . turn our 4 6's plus for 2 higher 6's . . . ilb and nt . . . ;)

but then again, why not just take one of them where they were at . . . idk . . . :)

Hopefully. Well, this means we'll have another 5 draftees to argue over!

If there's ever been a draft to have a bunch of 6th/7th round picks in, this is it.

Texn4life

I thought our roster was getting fairly set and the lower round players would have trouble making the team this year, and we trade down and pick up more of them. I guess we may have one of the best practice squads out there this year.

Extra picks mean you can gamble on some guys with the hope it'll pay off big. Gotta be able to see the forest through the trees.

This IS the year we pick up a Brady'esque player in the 6th that will play his way into infamy. Hide 'n watch. :winky:

Too many picks left to make the team. Maybe trade a sixth today for a fifth next year?

panamamyers
04-27-2013, 02:24 PM
We need a rb, cb, g, te, wr, fb.
We have a ton of needs still. Glad to have an extra pick.
Think about it.
Daniels and/or Wade Smith are probably going to be gone after this year.
Joseph and/or Manning might be.
We need to make sure we are ready.

I agree.

We have guys along the defensive line and receivers that can easily be replaced by guys still out there, in my opinion.

Porky
04-27-2013, 02:25 PM
I like it. I was actually thinking before the pick that the Texans history with 5th rounders hasn't exactly been great. Probably the best 5th we've ever drafted is our backup QB. Anyone else of note? Oh crap, forgot about Casey. Well....I'll pretend we didn't take him since Kubiak didn't use him well and he is gone lol.

I think overall though, we've actually had better luck in the 6th rd than the 5th.

With the luxury of 4 picks, I'm 100% taking a flyer on Da'Rick Rogers if he is still on the board. I understand he has off the field issues, but dude can play. He might be one of the best WR this year if you just look at how he plays. It's the off the field crap and the fact he got kicked off the team, but this is the 6th rd. Kid could be a big time contributer at WR.

we could definitely find some that could improve the bottom of our depth chart . . . like ol and db, not to mention a 3rd rb . . . ;)

Matt Scott?

You read my mind. I've liked this kid from AZ for a while and everything I've read on him points to him being the kind of clay that Gary can take a couple of years to work with and be a sound starter for years. Can't say noodle arm about this guy. He make all the throws. I just think there's enough there to make an NFL caliber QB knowing up front there's absolutely no pressure to start him right away.

HOU has fixed some glarring needs in this draft i am happy overall. With all the OL picks I am thinking we may see Wade Smith or Derek Newton cut & Antonio Smith signed to a extension. The reason is ILB & DL need starters/back up players to improve this team. Cushing is an unkown coming back from injury we need back up players at ILB that will not be a burden down the line.

Matt Scott and Da'Rick Rogers would make me a VERY, VERY happy camper. For the 3rd guy numerous ways to go.

There is an intriguing TE from UCLA named Joseph Fauria. Raw as hell, terrible blocker, but 6' 8" with a huge wingspan. Probably never an every down TE, but I could see that kid being a huge red zone and short yardage target at TE. Just throw it up high. Who the hell can cover him? Would like that one as well.

Outside of that, a NT or a CB like Poyer would be coolio too.

Overview

Bonner played at Newnan High School and was a first-team All-State selection as a junior and senior at wide receiver. He finished his senior year (in which he was a team captain) with 54 catches for 1,100 yards and 15 touchdowns. He was named All-State by the Atlanta Journal Constitution and by CSS television after his senior year. Bonner was also a two-time All-District and All-Region performer and helped the Cougars win a pair of Region Championships.

Bonner provided an instant impact, appearing in all 11 games for the Gamecocks. Bonner was an OVC All-Newcomer selection after leading the OVC and ranking ninth nationally in punt return average at 13.9 yards. He also hauled in 14 catches 300 yards and four touchdowns. In his sophomore year, he had 17 catches for 245 yards and five touchdowns. Bonner was second in the OVC with 25.9 yards per kickoff return and third with 10.8 yards per punt return. As a junior, Bonner played in all 11 games, and started 10 of them. He was the team's top receiver, hauling in 33 catches for 582 yards and three touchdowns, all of which were team highs. As a senior, he caught 50 passes for 859 yards and eight touchdowns.

True, it's possible he is a problem child, but nothing ventured nothing gained. If he "hits" you have a guy with talent close to your vaunted #1 pick. If he busts, cut his ass and it's only a loss of a #6 pick. Take a freaking chance for a change.

I'm guessing if they didn't take him by now, he is off the board entirely.

Draft Zone Spotlight: Chris Jones, DT, Bowling Green University

Chris Jones is one of the most aggressive, high motor football players I have seen this year. Why no one is talking more about him amazes me. Chris Jones was a late add to the Raycom All Star Game, and boy did he impress. This kid came into the Raycom game and showed the motor as he was blowing up the offensive lineman. He amazed so many scouts that numerous scouts I talked to wanted to get a second look at the massive defensive tackle. From the Raycom Chris was invited to the Combine where he ran a 5.3 forty and showed that the big man can move. He looked great in his drills and could have solidified himself as a draft pick.

COMPARES TO: Garrett Graham, TE, Houston Texans - Although overshadowed by Owen Daniels in Houston's offense, Graham is a reliable receiving threat who also gives good effort as a blocker. Griffin is probably more of a No. 2 TE like Graham, but can also step up and start if needed.

Source (http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/players/1689456/ryan-griffin)

STRENGTHS: Griffin passes the eye test with good size for the position. He has quick hands and length to extend and snatch the ball out of the air, using very good focus to adjust to off-target throws. Griffin does a nice job locating and going up to get it to bring it down, securing over-the-middle catches and showing natural ball skills.

We will pick up a few UDFA to compete at LB, both OLB and ILB probably. As everyone has been saying, this is a deep draft, and there isn't a big difference between the end of the 6th round and an UDFA. They got the guys they were targeting; they made several trades to end up where they ended up in the 6th round.

oh i know, but so will other teams . . . most teams that needed an ilb got at least one, so there's still hope . . . ;)

Lonnie Pryor would be a nice grab for us just in case Jones doesn't workout in preseason and we could stash him on practice squad.

Yea, I expect that to happen. It's a great fit.

Nice. A moderator calling a poster a derogatory name.

I guess being a moderator has its privileges. Way to set the example.

This could turn out to be one of the best drafts in Texans history. Pretty happy with it. Can't wait until camp starts.

Picks that should work out well:

Round/Name/Position

1/Hopkins/WR
2/Swearinger/S
3/Brennan Williams/OT
3/Sam Montgomery/DE
6/Quessenberyy/OT

Hopkins will be a Day 1 starter. Swearinger will be playing A LOT, in the 3rd role that Quin played for us.

Montgomery will be a situational guy like we used Mercilus last year. If he flashes, he could pass Mercilus. We'll just have to wait and see.

The two OT's will earn their way onto the O-Line if they can flash well in camp and preseason. We saw what our OL did in camp and preseason, so I think these two guys either surpass a couple guys or they settle in and play a depth role and rotational role this year. Will be interesting to see how this plays out.

----------------------------

Picks that are questionable/doubtful:

4/Trevardo Williams/DE (Projects here as a LB, IMO)
6/Bonner/WR
6/Jones/DT
6/Griffin/TE

Nothing here jumps out at me.

Notice that we traded UP in the 6th round. In the 6th round, the Cardinals picked WR Swope (A&M) at pick 174...the Browns pick next at 175 and BAM! we've traded up to 176 and select Quessenberry.

That tells me that it's possible we were targeting Swope and once he was off the board, during the time the Browns were on the clock on the next pixk at 175, we decided we better go to Plan B and move up pick 176 so that we wouldn't lose Quessenberry too. FYI: We selected a smaller guy named Bonner, WR, and I think Swope was going to be that guy for us but the Cardinals got Swope before we could.

In Round 4, if Sean Porter was a guy we needed to consider...we lost him to the Bengals who grabbed him at 118 overall and we picked 6 spots later and got a guy I am not impressed with, Trevardo Williams (Connecticut).

----------------------------

Pretty much rounds 1,2 and 3 with Quessenberry in the 6th are the only picks I think stand out. Rounds 4, 5 and the other guys in round 6...meh.

Half the draft looks great, the other half looks very meh to me.

Anybody else agree or have a different take on this? Let me know.

Why are people saying reed to ilb???

Sounds like kubiak and Rick smith pretty much quashed that...

Don't you think it's odd that a mod can call a guy a d-bag in a thread discussion?

Oh well. I just always think it's unfortunate for that to happen like that.

Because LB coach Herring made some comments stating that he and Wade would be "extremely comfortable" with that and that the recent draft picks gave them some "flexibility" to do it. We also don't have alot of depth there, so it makes sense.

I think its much more logical that we sign a Spikes who's still a good 2 down LB.

How long have you and DaRick been engaged?

For about a month lol.

Just in case you missed the context of everything. I'm pretty sure he was referring to Da'Rick Rogers as a D Bag, not Porky. Even if he meant it in like a "Oh you are a D-bag, and he is a d-bag, you'll make a good couple" kind of sense, I would have to believe he was simply joking.

No harm done.

:mcnugget:

I've seen the action over in the NSZ forum, Lurvinator11, and trust me...it was a carry-over comment targeted at Porky based on more than just "having fun."

I've been the target of a lot of Vinny's "having fun" replies, too, so I sorta' know what I see when I see it. But thanks for the effort, Lurvinator11. Never miss a chance to bag on ME. Right on schedule, pal. ;)

Did you hear Rick and Gary on 610?

They pretty much said it's not happening. Now, they could get in camp and try him there and like it, but at this moment it doesn't seem like they have any plans of moving reed to ilb full time.

They said they are comfortable with his versatility and ability to play there, but. They said he is an excellent solb and wouldn't move him from that position.

They better get on the same page down there on Kirby.

If they don't plan on moving Reed on the inside, I'm really surprised we didn't pick up an ILB at all. Right now all we have after Cushing is Dobbins, and Sharpton. Dobbins is okay, just not starting material. Sharpton has way too many injury issues, and cannot stay on the field.

I hope the front office can at least get one more guy in Free Agency, because i do not feel comfortable with that ILB position, if they don't move Reed inside.
