View Full Version : Not a joke, but yet I guess it is: Vince Young Throws at UT Pro Day

Seriously. The dude threw passes at UT's pro day, his agent organizing the spectacle so that NFL scouts (sigh) can see that Vince Young is ready for another shot. And Mack Brown, being Mack Brown, also chimes in and says "Someone is going to hit the LOTTERY with this guy [Young]..."

I kid you not.

Has there ever been a former starter in the NFL going back to his college's pro day to get the NFL to notice him again?

It just seems....desperate.

What's even worse is that he went crawling back to the isolated cave known as UT Football, and Mack Brown - who is easily the worst coach in all of sports at preparing players to be professional athletes - is, yet again, talking this guy up.

The way UT shelters and coddles and babies athletes is shameful. And, they almost all end up running back to Austin to take solace in past former glory and to get kudos from Daddy Mack.

Sad.

I have to say Jeff Fisher and others must have talked about VY with the league to the degree he is being shunned. I never thought he was as great as people claimed but he clearly has the physical tools and non-smart QB's with questionable work ethics (Carr) keep getting million dollar roster spots. The back room word must be atrocious. I mean c'mon he got bailed as the backup for a guy with several felony convictions.

As a huge UT fan, I hate to agree with you, but it's been this way for the last 12 years under "Cookies" (Mack Brown). I always laughed over the years when I'd hear Longhorn fans get upset when Mack would get clowned on. I'd argue with other fans about certain aspects with the Longhorns or in different areas, but I'd never stick up for Mack Brown. Worst football coach I've ever witnessed.

What else can it possibly be? You named Carr who clocked out at 5 and played like a guy who put in the bare minimum. I mean cassell, gabbert, ponder, Sanchez, kolb and even freakin tebow have jobs and they are terrible. Young has the ability even if he is not very intelligent but you'd think a coach could devise a plan to utilize his abilities to be an ok QB. I mean could he do any worse than these duds? i wonder if he should come clean and admit all his failings and accept total responsibility then maybe some gms might consider him as a viable option again? Either way this guy has fallen hard but ill give him credit for not being as worthless and inept as ryan leaf and Jamarcus Russell. Those two are total failures as players and men.

VY got plenty of chances. Philly thought enough of him to sign him as did Buffalo, but he couldn't stick. I highly doubt Fischer was calling the Eagles and Bills to bad mouth him enough for them to cut him. I laugh when vy fan boys blame his ills on Fischer. If he had the goods and the smarts to play in the league, he'd be playing in the league.

If I had to guess, I'd bet coaches think that his skills are such that the offense needs to be built around his abilities and shortcomings, rather than him fitting into a system or learning a system as a backup. I also have heard rumors that VY was constantly angling to be the starter instead of accepting his role as a backup and was causing tension in the locker room.

How many ways does this fail?

#1 - It is Fisher.

#2 - nobody, especially me, said Fisher went out of his way to call up and torpedo VY. I suggested there is a back story which has gone around the league which is why he is sitting on the couch. You don't think these people talk?

#3 - I am not either a VY fan or a UT fan other than at the level of I will root for UT just because it is a Texas team unless it is playing my alma mater.

#4 - he is 30-17 as a starter in the NFL. Find me examples of guys like that who can't even find a job. There is a back story here.

We are way beyond being a new star in the league. But he could be backing up a number of QB's in the league without any new system having to be built for him. In fact, just the opposite, his skill set should have people with those rare QB's knocking on his door. But they aren't.

First, I have no doubt Fisher let the other coaches know of his concerns with VY. However, the NFL is VERY forgiving, especially for highly talented players. Coaches will take chances on guys who have plenty of talent and keep them if they think they can help the team win and that player keeps his nose clean and isn't a problem in the locker room. Now, what many of VY's fans don't seem willing to admit is that MAYBE the concerns about VY are valid and these other coaches are seeing evidence thus his inability to make a team.

Second, I didn't call you a VY fan boy and if it came across that way I'm sorry. My statement was in general about VY fan boys. I come across many of them in various places and their manta is "He just wins" and "It's Fisher's fault he can't get a shot". Maybe he does win, but if he's a head case and has issues that the public doesn't see but coaches do then that could explain his lack of offers. There has to be a reason why he's been given chances after he left TN and still isn't able to land a job.

Frankly he needs to go to the CFL for a year and prove he still has the juice. If he can lead a CFL team to wins and make a playoff run, then he might get one last chance before he's forced to manage his restaurant in order to make rent.

How many of those guys have the "I quit on my team when things went bad" baggage coupled with the "I scored far below norm on the Wunderlich test" baggage in their backgrounds? Then the last time he had a meaningful chance to demonstrate he still had "it" with the Eagles, he stunk it up. And now, despite a pretty decent contract, he's broke??

Why would Fisher have to say anything when he's been with two other clubs since his Tennessee days and showed little to nothing? Or do you think Andy Reid and Chan Dailey are in on the VY black-balling too...?

I don't think coaches and GM's in the league are actively "conspiring" against him i just think that he's been unable to circumvent Fisher and the credibility Fisher has with other coaches and GM's all over the league. I don't think Fisher or anyone other coach is bad mouthing him perse, but i do think they're telling anyone who asks the truth about what really happened in Tennessee with VY and teams are just passing on bringing him in as a result of this info. This is one of the biggest reasons why VY apologized to Fisher out of the blue a few weeks before his tryout at the UT pro day.

He can definitely be a back up on someone's team and also do think he's done tons of growing up over the last year or so, it just may be too late.

That's exactly what I think is happening. I think people simply realized that Fisher had to taylor his offense around Vince Young's shortcomings. (That's why I think his winning record is a sham).

In addition, everyone has seen how he's flamed out in Philly and Buffalo, and his inability to grasp a playbook and compete. It's clear as day. No one has to bash him behind his back.

As for him coming here? LOL. This guy could never, EVER, grasp our offense. Our offense is based on precision and timing, and a QB needs to be a student of the game.

He can't read defenses. I think it's as simple as that, because we know the NFL will forgive lots of low character offenses (in VY's case, he's a quitter and a whiner).

But his skills, specifically mental, are just not NFL quality. Dude's Wonderlic score was not an accident. He just doesn't have the smarts to be a consistent QB in the NFL when defenses spy him. I think that is the reason why he could even be a third string QB for the Buffalo Bills. They are desperate and would have kept him....if he could learn a basic playbook and comprehend defensive formations.

Pat White went back to West Virginia, and now the 49ers are looking at him... so yes.

Pat White never started in the NFL.

Troy Smith - okay, some abysmal starts, so you gave me one example. Nothing like the VY story, but it does qualify. So we have Troy Smith and VY.

Jared Zabransky never started in the NFL.

NONE of these players, though, were shoved down our collective throats by the national and local media as The Next Hall of Fame QB like VY was hyped.

I don't wish anything bad on Vince Young. I just wish he would go away and become the hydration engineer for UT football that is his destiny.

not just the playbook/offense thing but all the other off-the-field locker room stuff that didn't wind up in the media too. I think collectively, all of it has just been too much for him to overcome...............thus far. I think he'll eventually make it back in the league as a back up based on the Mike Vick situation and on how the league's offenses are trending these days.

One of these teams with a running qb will probably pick him up & he'll have a few years to sit behind the starter and take all the time he needs to learn the offense thereby allowing him to be an asset to the team when he is called upon..a luxury he didn't really have in philly considering it was his 1st real foray into a real NFL offense.

I think it's pretty obvious that other teams have talked to the Titans/Fisher to inquire about what went down. I'm sure Fisher made no secret about it. It's just like any other job reference. The thing is, that story was out there before VY was an Eagle. It was out there before VY was in training camp for the Bills. So despite the story, a couple teams took a chance on him. They regretted it enough to cut him loose as quickly as they did. So the notion that this back room talk is keeping VY from getting a job just doesn't bear out, to me. VY's repeated confirmation of that back room story is what's keeping VY from getting a job.

While David Carr does have questionable work ethics and ability, he never had meltdowns like VY did on the field. It's one thing to be a ****heel in the locker room, but when you're throwin your pads around on your home field after making some mistakes in the game, that kind of public perception just doesn't go away.

David Carr never quit on his team, he just never went above and beyond to make himself a NFL caliber starter. Vince Young has been labeled as a quitter and I bet Fisher let everybody know that. If you are labeled as a quitter in the NFL, you might as well slap a scarlet Q on your shirt cause nobody is gonna want to waste time on you.

He's a coach killer.

What Coach wants to roll out a QB that doesn't understand the playbook and can't read defenses. He's a great improviser and I'm sure he's the king of "kill the man with the ball" (or smear the queer for all you non-PC types) football. He's not an ideal spokesperson away from the game either (face of the franchise stuff). It all adds up to no soup for you.

kordell stewart was absolutely right, there is a lot of double standards when it comes to black players getting a second chance just to even be a back up qb than a white qb.

White qbs who fail as starters are given perpetual chances yet once a black qb fails they almost always never get a second chance or even have a chance to be a back up.

Those pro bowls are about as fraud as Schaub's are..he was an alternate & only got in b/c a number of guys stepped down...the winning record thing..yeah that was all him..But when you consider that father time Kerry Freaking Collins led his team to a 13-3 record over that same time span with virtually the same team, you know VY had next to nothing to do with "his" winning record.

Furthermore, if you consider the year Vick had in 2012, had VY played remotely decent in the little time he got in Philly he'd probably still be there as a back up.. especially with Chip Kelly coming aboard. Leftwich & Gerrard haven't really had any issues landing back up qb jobs..Mcnabb probably could've latched on a few more years as a back up if he wanted to. Aside from that Vick went to jail for 2 damn years and was still able to come back and eventually land a starting spot in the NFL.

In Buffalo he screwed himself with all the financial crap he had going on..If he didn't have that nonsense going on, he had a decent shot at unseating garbage ass Fitzpatrick. he's had his chances, he's just now realizing that playing in the league is a blessing...it's probably too late though.

& this is not even taking in the countless chances im sure he got in Tenn...

First of all, VY got 2nd and 3rd chances in TEN alone. He lost his job to Collins and got another chance. He quit on hsi team and got another chance. Then he went to the Eagles for a 4th chance. He did well enough there, or they were at least desperate enough, that he stayed as the backup. Then he got a 5th chance in Buffalo to at leat be the backup, and he evidently did terribly enough that the Bills, a team well known for their massive depth at the QB position, cut him outright before the season even started.

As I said earlier in this thread, it's been VY's repeated confirmation of the knocks on him that have undermined his career.

This is the wrong thread for ridiculous excuses and conspiracy theories against Vince Young. You need to post those here http://www.shaggybevo.com/board/showthread.php/124492-VY-s-2013-destination

Vince only has himself to blame for his current unemployment. Hopefully he can grow up and revive his career. I wouldn't mind seeing him sign with the Bucs. They have just cut loose all of their QBs but Freeman. Freeman needs someone with talent to push him.

The only thing that makes me want to see Vince fail are these ridiculous/obnoxious VY fanboys that don't think he can do any wrong.

And Daily is much better at his profession than Vince has been/ever will be at his.

Good to see you back Dex.

VY is also broke as well. He is trying to get his degree and hopefully his act together. But hopefully he can get another chance. At QB but it will possibly be as a backup.

He wont get his degree because the NFL has conspired against him and is working with the NCAA to keep him from getting his degree. On top of that everyone knows that black former NFL qbs are discriminated against... Just ask Jules.

The Texans should bring VY in as a WR2.

This is the position he was best suited for in the NFL. The demands of playing QB in the NFL were far to great for a mental midget like VY.

Maybe TE but not WR.

and what does that tell you about VY and his ability? What it tells me is that the NFL is much more demanding on your body and that VY couldnt get his sh!t together for the eagles or the bills to get back in.

vince young deserves a second chance just on this performance alone:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4SWVU0vu0a8

kordell stewart was absolutely right, there is a lot of double standards when it comes to black players getting a second chance just to even be a back up qb than a white qb.

White qbs who fail as starters are given perpetual chances yet once a black qb fails they almost always never get a second chance or even have a chance to be a back up.

Biggest COS I've read on this MB in years.

Is that you Dex?
