Ravens | Sanders Thinking Adoption
Fri, 17 Jun 2005 19:38:38 -0700

Adam Schefter, of NFL.com, reports Baltimore Ravens CB Deion Sanders is planning to adopt Noel Devine, one of Florida's most highly-touted high school running backs. "The principal of my high school told me about him a couple of years ago," Sanders said. "Said the young man needed guidance. I didn't follow through then, but was back in my hometown for a Jevon Kearse event recently. Three more people told me about Noel and his struggles. I've spent some time with the young man, and he needs direction. He doesn't have parents; they died. God put this young man in my heart. This is not about sports. This is about a kid's life."

Here are some highlights of Noel Devine...

The kid looks impressive. He has sort of an upright running style, and he's got great speed/quickness to go along with a good ability to shake some tacklers. Looks like any college that is lucky enough to get him is going to have quite a player.

How could it not? This is a win-win fatherhood for both parts.

Any word on where this kid is going for college? Is he even a senior yet? The kid looks kinda big, and with his running style, he could be the next Adrian Peterson.

I, being from Fort Myers, Florida and knowing what it is like to grow up here think that Deion is doing the right thing for this kid. He has no parents and lives from home to home. He has no real family and "trouble" is calling his name freely. Deion is taking this kid under his wing to show him that his talent is a gift and not to waste it like so many others have. Deion can not adopt all the troubled youth, but I commend him for attempting to save one from a life that otherwise could turn to crime and all the other evils that lurk.

PEACE!

Well, pardon me for being cynical, but Deion could have 'adopted' any number of hard-case youths up to this point. The fact that this kid has mad skillz is the only reason Deion is doing this, and it's because he's gonna beat his own chest when the kid succeeds and take a share of the credit. Yeah, what a saint.

This is the same man who refused to pay a Dallas area car repair shop for approx $5,000 worth of repairs because "the Lord told him not to". Of course, a court of law disagreed, and Deion had to pay up.

This is a leopard who cannot change his spots. He's hiding selfish motives behind an altruistic front.

End of rant.

I am in NO WAY a Deion fan. I actually have a hard time claiming he is from my hometown but, whether for selfish reasons or not... we will find out in time.

Actually Deion has been religious for some years now....he goes to the Potter House church in Dallas. T.D. Jakes, a very famous preacher, was responsible for Deion and Michael Irvin becoming Christians and both are devoted.

If Deion does end up adopting this young man it's a great thing.

Deion WON the lawsuit against the automobile repair shop and didn't have to "pay up"....

Cynical is an understatement. I can't speak for Deion's motives because I don't know him, but if I were to compare with my own, then I could way without reservations, that it would be for the best interest for the both. For myself it would be to use my love, resources and time to share with another human being. Deion has made a success in his chosen career, and he doesn't need to adopt a child to feel good about himself. He also has about five children that he could limit his paternal instincts to.

Deion refused to be gouged by the car repairman, chose not to pay a $1 more than fair value and thnk goodness based on repair records and value, the courts agreed.

No one's life is guaranteed to turn out a certain way, so even with Deion's best efforts, there is no guarantee that all the ducks are going to file in a row, which he would also share. However, my question is is it better for young man to remain homeless so that someone like Deion would not have an opportunity to share in his future? Personally, I have to give Deion an applaud because agreeing to become a parent to child no matter the age is a commendable choice no matter what the salary bracket is.
