The 2012-13 New England Patriots just became the first team in NFL history to get back-to-back byes before advancing to the conference championship game.

Could this get any easier?

I mean, seriously? The planets are aligned and the tomato cans are in place. The fraudulent Houston Texans are the only team standing between the New England Patriots and a trip to the AFC Championship game. All the Patriots have to do is beat the terrible Texans. One week from today. At Gillette Stadium.

New England led, 21-0, after nine minutes. It was 28-0 in the fifth minute of the third quarter. It was 35-7 in the first minute of the final quarter. When it got to 42-7, both starting quarterbacks were lifted from the game.

The great J.J. Watt was a zero in that game. Then he was unavailable for comment after the game. Houston’s ever-overmatched defensive coordinator, Wade Phillips, was scratching his head, perhaps wondering why his guys were unable to cover all those Patriots wide receivers.

Phillips and head coach Gary Kubiak did what almost everybody does against the Patriots. They choked. The forget what got them to this level. They played on their heels, and let Brady carve them up like a medical school cadaver. No pressure. Total retreat. Total surrender.

Is it at all possible for someone to print this out in 24"x36" paper and slap on every single houston texan locker on Sunday? It may or may not make a difference but if I were in their shoes, I would want to know just how little respect others hold for us.

If this doesn't motivate the Texans to kick some ass and get a W, I don't know what will:

This is not the same. Those Jets were not afraid of the Patriots. Those Jets had players and a coach who did not wet their pants at the sight of Bill Belichick and Tom Brady. Those Jets had attitude.

The 2012-13 Texans? Pure frauds. The worst 11-1 team in the history of the NFL. These Texans have absolutely zero chance of beating New England here next week. And everybody knows that this is true.

what douche, he spends a lot of energy disputing the jets ass whooping by builiding up the Jets and their coaching staff and disgracing the Texans.

This MUST be the Texan's battle cry.

The refs better not be pulling the PI BS, especially when the ball is not catchable.

If Shaunessy was here in Houston he'd have written something equally insulting about the Patriots & fluff up the Texans.

Funny thing is Watt put brady on his ass like 8 times. Patriots have all them short ass white guys and they do little slants pick and rolls, snap the ball before the defense is ready. Dont leave much time for the D-line to get to brady.

I know the texans had sucked the last month everyone knows that, but this will not be a cake walk game for the patriots. If we would of played them in the early stage of the season when we were playing dominant football we would of crushed them. If we can get half way back to that form next sunday we will win

The guy writing the column is an idiot. When the pats werent playing their best ball they got beat by the cards, and a few other bad teams. Everyone team goes through their low point, we will get on track and beat the Pats next weekend.

Arrogance, Reflected

After spending the better part (for a writer as hacktastic as Shank, is that a contradiction in terms?) of his mediocre career lambasting players as prima donnas, owners as arrogant, and everyone else as basement trolls, The CHB has truly become that which he lives to despise.

For today, for the second time in three days and the third time in a month, The CHB calls the Texans "frauds" and says the Patriots will walk over the competition to the AFC Championship.

Who is calling who arrogant? For The CHB, whose range as a columnist runs the gamut from childish name-calling to demeaning of talent and everything in between -- and why not, since he's had a pretty lucrative run perpetrating his own fraud on the owners of the Boston Globe -- this is the epitome of his projectionism.

"The lady doth protest too much, methinks."

Some more background on him: He is the one who originally coined the "Curse of the Bambino". After the Sox won in 04, they showed the Boston press box and the only one who wasn't either in tears or elated was Schaugnassey. If I remember correctly, he actually had a slightly disappointed look on his face that his claim to fame was essentially null and void.

He is now known for these types of pieces; overly extreme in one direction (positive for Boston teams or negative) to get attention for his articles. He also wrote a piece a few years back about why Cornell "deserves" to beat Kentucky in March Madness that got national attention, mainly because of how dumb the logic behind it was.

In summary, he's a hack. He has the nickname "Curly Haired Boyfriend" and "Shanks" in Boston, neither endearing in any way. If you want a real take from the Patriots side, I can link to the articles from the more respected Patriots writers later this week when they are published.

Think about how many times people have bitched about Belichick pouring on the points and throwing for TDs in the 4th quarter when they're up by 21+. In that Monday night game, Belichick let up. You can come up with whatever reason you think he did, but it was pretty evident to me that he let up because he knew the Texans, and especially Kubiak, had quit. That was as complete an ass whipping as I've ever witnessed in the NFL. It was not just a scoreboard defeat.

How can you blame this goof ball for liking the Patriots chances against a team the Patriots absolutely slaughtered a month ago?
Have the Texans shown some incredible play as of late that would alter your thinking the same outcome will not come to fruition?
The Texans can win, but some calls, some balls, and the stars will all have to align towards them.
Not impossible, just damn near.

I'm not surprised at all at this kind of talk coming from that part of the states. Only thing is bashing Watt is a new low for them in my mind. Not his fault the secondary couldn't cover for even a second a lot of the time. I still blame the safeties for inexplicably focusing on the RB. Obviously, Harris was crap in that game too.

The only thing I would say re: bulletin board material is: are you kidding me? The only motivation your team needs is right there with the 42-14 embarrassment in the first game. You can bet the Texans will be ready to show up, unlike the first game, when they pee'd down their leg. That won't happen again.

If your team needs motivation from CHB, then they don't deserve to be in the game to begin with.

Playing for home field advantage should have been too.

Exactly. Playing to get into the AFC Championship game should be motivation enough. Should be.

Playing for home field advantage should have been too.

Agreed. But just because we didn't win, doesn't mean they weren't motivated. It means we didn't play very well.

I would have hated for us to win one of those last two games & been sitting around watching the play-offs this past weekend.

This team flat out was not good playing against Minnesota. There's no way that team would have beaten the Ravens that played yesterday, or the Ravens that will play next week. No way.

Getting healthy isn't going to help us. We're not getting back a Brian Cushing or Jonathan Joseph next week. We needed a good week of practice to "fix" a dozen issues that prevented us from playing good football. We needed to play a game against good competition to verify that we fixed those issues, or identify that the issue wasn't fixed.

Now we've got another week of practice to address a few issues we didn't fix & another dozen we didn't address.

I like the idea of playing at home. I like the idea of having the play-offs come through Houston. If we were playing like we were week 7, week 9, or even week 11 then I can see that bye week helping us. But as it was..... no.

The Texans should go into Foxborro with a black fleur de lis on the side of their helmets and think of Thomasina Brady as Bret Favre. The first time he gets his hands on the ball they should strive for a BRUTAL, flagrant roughing the passer. They should act as if the outcome of the game was predetermined by the refrees and turn it into an exercise of "how hard can we hit Tom Brady and Wes Welker."

They should act as Sun Tzu's troops did when they were outnumbered and fighting in the mountains. We have NOTHING to lose. How many of these SOBS can I take with me before I go. ESPN, Fox Sports, Sports Illustrated, NBC Sports and CBS sports has GIVEN this one to the Patriots before the kick off. I say the Texans go in there and play 60 minutes of the most angry football the Patriots have ever seen. The refs are going to ignore the numerous times J.J. Watt will be tackled on his way to Brady. There will be scores of mysterious pass interference calls against Jackson and Quinn.
I say vugg it. Level some EXCRUCIATING hits on "defenseless receivers". "Rough the passer" whenever possible. The Texans will be playing against the Patriots, The National Media, The Crowd and the refs. The only one of those four whom you can knock the ever loving piss out of, give a concussion and have carted off the field are the Patriots. Prepare to hand Goddell a game check. Be some broke sons of 3itches with superbowl rings rather than rich young men at home WATCHING someone ELSE earn one! WIN AT ALL COSTS or don't bother making the trip. One advantage I can say the Pats have right off. THEY have a QB all we have is Schaub.

The fact is, if the Shaughnessy story is what the Texan players need to make them fired up to play the Pats, then they've lost already.

Why would any player be listening to what a mediot columnist says. Their job is to stir things up to begin with. What's funny is that he column is getting panned among Pats almost as it is here. Here's a link and see for yourself

http//www.patsfans.com/new-england-patriots/messageboard/10/994930-dan-shaughnessy-gives-uninformed-texans-fans-posting-material-ugh.html

The bottom line will be that the game will be won on the field, by the players and coaches and not by some overly smug, self serving sports writer, who cares more about trending on twitter, than informing his shrinking readership.

It just depends on the person.

Some athletes may do better ignoring it but I think some just add it to their list of things that fuel them. It was said that Jordan would use any little thing that anyone said about him to motivate himself.

In football's case, just look at the first thing Bart Scott said after the win in 2010. It was about what 'they' said about the Jets. He even NAMED guys that didn't believe in the team.

So I don't think there is no wrong or right way to motivate a team or player.

I wouldn't get too invested in the Jets playoff upset in the 2010 playoffs. There are only 23 players on the Pats that had to endure the pain of that loss.

In 2010 BB was just into the 2nd year of a virtual reboot of the Roster that dominated the league until 2007 There are only about 8 players left from that 2007 team. Most people aren't aware that the Pats had the youngest defense in the league. BB's genius is that managed that roster reboot while still remaining one of better teams in the league every year.

No not that I was comparing the Jets team and situation to that of our own now.

Only that it seemed like the Jets listened to all the noise then and it probably motivated them. I mean the first thing their team captain says after the win is about how everyone doubted them and even named some of those that did.

As for Adrian Foster, a great player who I have great respect and admiration for. I don't mean to imply that he's a bad guy for "listening to the noise". Its only natural. That's why the Pats put so much effort in NOT being distracted by outside influences. Its a learned skill that been institutionalized in Foxboro. Players are made aware of this from the first day they walk in the door.

Bottom like, Foster shouldn't be listening to the musings of the mediots, whether they are praising or damning his team. The fact that he is, probably doesn't really matter in the great scheme of things. If anything his tweets are probably now bulletin board material in the Pats locker room. "Not being distracted by outside influence" "Fosters tweets are probably bulletin board material". So, which is it, and what exactly has Foster tweeted that would be that sort of material exactly (I'm pretty sure you won't find any)?

I've heard many Pats fans say that if Foster needs extra motivation then the Texans have already lost. I'm sure the '01 Pats didn't use any sort of media written about them or how they were gifted a win vs Oakland as motivation going into the game against the Rams. Motivation in football is a funny thing and can certainly lead to great upsets. And we've certainly seen the Pats fall to a team their fans believe than to be superior than during playoff and championship football. So you go ahead and keep believing that there is nothing to worry about from the lowly Texans.

I'm pretty sure Brady learned his lesson after famously asking when the last time the Patriots only scored 17 was, responding to a score prediction made by Plaxico Burress before the Superbowl.

Jordan is the perfect example of this...He was a player that was always looking for some perceived slight in order to give him an edge. Just look at his HOF speech.

Arian Foster himself is a good example of this. He still carries a chip on his shoulder about being undrafted. I hope he keeps remembering that and using it to motivate himself.

The Pats are funny about outside motivation. Rodney Harrison mastered it and ingrained it as part of the Patriot Way, making them out to be underdogs when they were double digit favorites.

What us fans believe is irrelevant. What matters is whats going on this week for game planning and how they execute. It's my belief that Belichick will coach the Pats up to win, and Kubiak will coach up your guys not to lose. I could be wrong, and I have no problem coming back in here to say I was wrong in the event the Texans beat the Pats. I just don't think they will. I think Belichick has the advantage.

That one word is the key to everything. Belichick.

Has there been any other NFL coach who got sent to the curb like he did (Browns and Jets)...and then came back and basically re-invented himself and ended up dominating the way this guy has dominated for over a decade now? I mean, his level of coaching is like Michael Jordan'ish in terms of its duration and its unending relentlessness.

The Jets were upset about that for a long time.

One of the key tenants of the "Patriot Way" is "don't listen to the noise". It comes right after "do your job". in other words, don't listen to what the mediots in the press and talk shows are saying. They don't know whats going on.

Right now Adrian Foster is "listening to the noise". Not a great sign. Well actually it IS a great sign.....if you are a Pats fan. ;)

 Dallas Cowboy Thomas "Hollywood" Henderson prior to facing the Steelers in a Superbowl said: "Terry Bradshaw is so STUPID, he couldn't spell 'cat' if you spotted him the 'c' and the 't.' ." Bradshaw paid attention...I forget...who won that Superbowl again?

Hollywood wasn't a member of the media. The players hear when others players yap. Steelers DB Anthony Smith guaranteed a win against NE in '07. Brady specifically targeted him, and then he made sure to get in his face about it during the game.

Video highlights here. 1:27 of the video shows Brady yapping back. (http://youtu.be/Ua0i6WB7G_M)

They did the same thing in 2004 against the Eagles, with Freddie Mitchell running his mouth as well.

The contingent among the national media is a Patriot win. ESPN, Sports Illustrated, Fox Sports, NBC Sports and CBS sports are all unanimous in thinking the Pats will take this one. The only thing they disagree on is the "margin of victory." If you're on that Texan Team you're thinking that you'll be playing against The Patriots, The Crowd at Foxborrough, The Refs AND the National Media. Sorry but if I had a bull on the side of my helmet I'd be making it my mission to prove ALL of the aforementioned wrong.
Doug Williams was a back up QB with the Redskins playing against John Elway and the heavily favored Broncos. The sports writers GAVE that game to the Broncos before a down was played. When Elway and the Broncos scored FIRST they merely thought they had confirmation. The rest of the game proved OTHERWISE.

If the Texans defense goes into this game remembering that Thomas Brady was not BORN IN A MANGER in Bethlehem, DIDN'T preach the sermon on the mount, perform the miracle of the loaves and fishes, WON'T be betrayed by one of his disciples and WON'T rise on the 3rd day after his crucifixion then they MIGHT just have a shot.

wait, so your saying you guys have to nail TB12 to a cross to win?

I know the underdogs can win. I was there in New Orleans when they won the first one, and the Rams fans were all politely arrogant. I am not saying you can't win. You can. But if you need the CHB to motivate your players, then that's a problem. They should *in best Ray Lewis voice* to a man, go to Foxboro and take what's theirs. I just don't think they will. I think Kubiak will play it safe and the Pats will do just enough to win.

Two things:

1. God no. If they do that he'll win and several Brady religions will bet started.

2. I'm hoping your wrong.
