Let's just hope he hasn't stiffed GP on a tip so we can keep this positive :D

But seriously, incredible stuff. This is the kind of player who makes it impossible not to love him. I'll be cheering for JJ even if he ever plays for another team. He's just such a complete person. This is inspiring.

JJ is my son's (12 yrs old) favorite player and has been before he had the renown that he has now.

He asked me the other day: "Dad, if you could be tackled by any of the Texans, who would it be?"

I thought for a second and not waiting, he stated: "If it were me, I would want to be tackled by JJ WATT! That'd be cool. But what about you Dad?"

I looked over at him and said, "Well son just about anyone of the Texans CHEERLEADERS would have to be my choice."

We both got a pretty good laugh out of that.

I saw the game at the bar and I'm glad they didn't have the volume on or I'd be in full boo hoo mode at a bar.

I can say that the interactions I've had with him at camp stuff etc, he's been very generous to fans in general. Like he goes the extra mile for fans.

Love to see athletes who get it. He doesn't just rely on his athletic gifts but works as hard as anyone. And realizes his special place in the community and in growing this franchise.

This story brought tears to my eyes when I read about the wreck and brought them again watching that video.

Have you ever sat and daydreamed about winning the lottery and all the good things you'd do if you did win it? JJ probably did the same thing and is holding true to his word. An amazing man.

Norg, JJ and Suh meet in a dark alley....who do you think walks out? Swagger only gets you so far. You can be a bad azz sumbitch that nobody messes with and a good human being. Swagger is all hat and no cattle, all sizzle and no steak. JJ is the King Ranch and prime rib. There's no BS or back up in that man.

I actually went to High School with Josh (the father) as well but hadn't seen him in years. I remember having dinner with him at Chuys in '92 or so but nothing since.

JJ Watt surprises young cancer patient

»HOUSTON—When we first*told you about a 12-year-old in Splendora*who was fighting leukemia by using a robot named “Watt” that goes to elementary school for him, someone named “Watt” was watching that story too and decided he needed to pay a surprise visit.Cristian Beasley*is one of 34 students across the country using the*VGo telepresence system. From a home computer they can control a small robot, drive from class to class, and take part in classroom lectures and discussions. The children are encouraged to give their robots a nickname.* Cristian named his after Houston Texans defensive end J.J. Watt.*“’Cause I love J.J. Watt,” he said. The Texans star saw the story and decided Cristian was someone he had to meet.

The actual name of the shoe is nike free trainer 5.0 and they are already out in select colors. Plus you can always go to nikeID and make your own colorways. I think the "megawatt" version of these he's talking about is just the all-white color with his name on the back like in the pic.

Here are the ones i saw in Champs and Finish line..but i've also seen other colors as well.

As Texans fans, we are lucky to have a player a player like him off and on the field.

I hope he never has a 'scandal' or any other reason to think that his actions are less than genuine. I think that would break Houston's collective heart.

Not a popular opinion, but we have to be pragmatic and admit that it is a possibility.

Let's see how popular JJ is next off-season when the team tries to sign him to a new contract.

I have a feeling that many folks that are currently gushing over the guy might feel a little different next season. See AJ for an example of a once mighty hometown hero becoming a zero to many fans.

JJ is going to demand a huge chunk of the salary cap for any team. That contract is going to create an imbalance for whatever team signs him. It's one thing to have that much cap invested in an elite QB, but we have seen time and time again where other positions commanding such a large percentage of cap actually hurts the team.

My opinion of A.J. hasn't slipped at all.. Reason why I've barely even clicked on that thread. (That and I don't feel like reading pages of derailed bull****).

Point was.. Watt doesn't have to be a disingenuous media where in order to secure a big contract or a job outside of football. That's what lesser talents like Eric Winston have to resort to so people don't forget their name. All Watt has to do is keep having the type of seasons and production he has been having and all will be taken care of.

Why do people have to be so jaded? Maybe he is just really that focused and enjoys giving back (Berry kids ect.)

I like JJ, and from what I can tell, he's the guy we think he is.

My point was more about the fickle attitude of some fans when it pertains to the business side of professional sports.

At the end of the day, JJ will rightfully want to get paid. If there is any delay in that contract, or if he decides to go to another team, some fans will be unable to see past the business side of things and will make it personal.

Not me, though, as I tend to be like you and do not let my emotions form my opinions.

Damn, nobody got that was mocking fans who think they are mind readers and who readily turn on players.

I figured your post was satirical in nature and just used it to piggy-back a bigger picture point. The sad part is that your satire will ultimately prove to be prophetic if JJ's contract negotiations hit a snag or he goes somewhere else.

Lance Berkman once told me on air that fans like me were terrible fans whenever he became (after a short stint in NY) a Cardinal....

#34 was a great runner but he couldn't block or catch the ball, and he was a fumbler, carrying the ball in one hand at arm's length from his body. Remember the time he lost a won game at Oakland when he could have reeled the ball in and walked into the end zone? The last defender thought, "I can't get to him, but maybe I can get a hand on the ball he's holding at arm's length toward me." So he lunged and swung at the ball and Charles Phillips recovered and ran it back 98 yards for a Raiders TD.
Walter Payton was a far more valuable running back.

If the salary cap stays as is then yes, but it's not, so it won't be impossible. It would probably make it impossible to have him and a really good QB not on his rookie deal though.

Maybe a little off topic, but with the contracts getting inflated like they are I wonder if we'll see teams offer less per year but higher amounts guaranteed. Instead of $140 with $55 guaranteed, maybe $100-110 with $75-85. Same amount of time just a little less per year to help build a team around these guys.

I tend to agree. I dig JJ Watt and hope he's a Texan for his entire career, but once I step out of that fan bubble, the reality is that he's going to cost so much that it will ultimately mean the team cannot pay a premium at other positions.

We had arguably the best defensive player on the roster in 2013, and only managed 2 wins. If this was one of the four elite QBs, you could justify that much cap for one player. But, nobody on defense can alter a game like an elite QB, so a team has to balance what it wants with what it needs.

"It's really exciting to be back. It's always fun when football season is in the air," Watt said. "Just like the fans, we get excited about it, we get revved up and ready to go. It's going to be fun."

With a new coaching staff in place and a new defensive scheme to be learned, Watt was asked if he was more energized coming into this camp.

"Did I lack energy last year?" Watt responded. "That's my answer. I feel like I'm always energized. I get to play this game and you never know when it's going to end. Some kids think their career ends in high school, some kids in college, some people only get to play a few years in this league, some people get to play a long time. As long as I get an opportunity to play this game, I'm going to cherish it and I'm going to be energized to play it."
...
"Yes, obviously there is a little bit different feel," Watt said. "It's a good coaching staff. We have a good staff that works very hard, they're energetic, they're very smart and it's going to be fun to play for them. Obviously, a new coaching staff brings some change with it, but football is football. You go out there and you work as hard as you possibly can and try and be a great teammate. With a new staff, you want to get in the playbook as much as you can to learn the system.

"But the best part about training camp is every day is an opportunity to get better. Every single day that I step on the field, you get a chance to work on a skill. You get a chance to work on a technique, you get to improve and you get a few weeks to do so. There's really no time of year quite like training camp, where you can really dramatically improve just over a few weeks."
...
"We're looking to get as good as we can get every single day," Watt said. "We're going to work every single day to be as good as we can be. It all starts Saturday and we're going to go out to the practice field and we're going to try to improve that day and then Sunday and then Monday. It's not the answer that you want to hear, but that's what we're going to do."

I dunno if anyone has posted this or not. J.J. Watt is awesome. Here is an article on Grantland: http://grantland.com/features/j-j-watt-houston-texans-2014-nfl-preview/

One of Watt’s favorite moves is one he calls the jab-and-go.3 It typically starts with him lining up just outside of a guard. In Phillips’s one-gap defense, that space between the guard and tackle is Watt’s responsibility. The standard way players are taught to control that gap is by firing into it just as the ball is snapped, to claim that space with the most speed and authority possible. Every so often, Watt will eschew those lessons. Instead, he takes a step inside, momentarily leaving him and the defense vulnerable. “If it works, you’re giving up your gap for a brief second to gain an advantage in getting back in your gap more effectively,” Watt says. “If it doesn’t, you’re giving up your gap, and you’re also blocked, so now there’s one gap unaccounted for.” Usually, it leaves a guard so off-balance that he has to catch his footing just to keep from falling on his face.

Happy187
08-01-2014, 11:33 AM
one paragraph from article

In nearly four decades of pro football, Phillips has been lucky enough to coach some of the best pass-rushers ever. He had five years with Bruce Smith in Buffalo. He coached Reggie White for three in Philadelphia. Before arriving in Houston, he oversaw the prime of DeMarcus Ware’s career with the Cowboys. “Two years ago was the best defensive line play in the history of football,” Phillips says. “He had more tackles, blocked passes, pressures on the quarterback. The conglomeration of all that was the best that anybody has ever played. I’ve had some great ones, but they’ve never made that many great plays in one year.”
