Doesn't look good for Ball and Newton, but JJo has a good chance to go.

Head Coach Gary Kubiak
(on injury updates) As far as the guys that did not practice, (CB) Alan Ball did not practice. (T Derek) Newton did not practice and (OLB) Brooks (Reed) did not practice. Of those three guys, Alan Ball worked with the trainers. The other two were inside. Other than that, everybody was back at practice.
(on if CB Johnathan Joseph could start on Monday) I think weve got to keep going. Its a long week. Whats today? Friday? So weve still got three days before we play and all the steps have been positive. Yesterday, he did more today. Same thing with (ILB) Bradie (James). Theyre all heading toward playing, but I think until we get there, we have to be smart and see whats going on.
(on if theyre still game-time decisions) Well, I think if they all come out of practice, these guys were talking about, come out of practice fine tomorrow, they should be ready to go, should be no setbacks. Youre talking about some players that have been out for a while and were bringing them along with a process here. Its not like he went out there and took 100 percent of the snaps today, but its been good.
(on RT Derek Newtons status) You know what, he got sore. That was his first workout back yesterday, got sore on us so we shut him down today. He will, hopefully, go back tomorrow and if the steps he takes are good over the course of the next couple of days, he could still be there. In response to his first time back on the field, we shut him down today.

Kubiak (on CB Stanford Routt) Kind of what I told you yesterday, he can lock somebody up. Hes very talented. He was better today, as far as scheme-wise and what we did. He took more reps today. Depending on (CB) Alan (Ball) right here, he could very well be suiting up this weekend. If he does, hes going to have to play some special teams and possibly go out there. I think its a good chance for him and his career and where better for him to get a chance to get that thing going again than right there where he went to school? Its a good situation for him.

Wade (on CB Stanford Routt) Hes faster than everybody, so thats a good start. Hes very athletic. And hes a veteran guy who can come in and understand the concepts. Hes already caught onto what we do defensively, especially on third down stuff. Which I think is where hed have to play early for us if that would come about. And without J-Joe (CB Jonathan Joseph) hes going to have to play.

CB Johnathan Joseph
(on how he feels) Im good to go. Im good to go. I practiced yesterday and today, felt fine, so Im good to go.
(on if hes starting on Monday) Yeah, no doubt about it.

CB Stanford Routt
(on what this defense is like from the inside) Its great. Its got playmakers on all three levels. Pass rush, linebackers and especially in the secondary. So its going to be real fun to be a part of it.
(on what he thinks about the opportunity to be a part of this team) Its great. Be able to play in my home state. Playing for a team thats winning and on its way to the playoffs. Like I said, well just have to see what happens, but Im happy.
(on if he has heard from a lot of Houston fans) Yeah, I heard from some of them, so its going to be real fun.
(on how he fits in with this defense) I think I fit in real well. They play a lot of man coverage, mix it up a lot. The corners are aggressive and play with a lot of confidence, so I think its going to be a good fit for me.

Take it with a grain of salt, but here's two first-hand quotes via twitter:

Nick Scurfield ‏@NickScurfield

Johnathan Joseph: "I'm good to go." Asked if he'll start Monday, said, "No doubt. No doubt about it." #Texans

ILB Bradie James (hamstring) said "I'm back. There's nothing that's going to keep me out of this one." #Texans

You are prob right... just not sure about concussion rehab, steps, practice allowed, etc?

There's an article from the Boston Globe out there.

Just google concussion protocol matters.

Graham needs to be checked out after practices and pass a final test.
We don't know exactly where he's at, so it's just a waiting game

"Other than that (3 players not named Graham), everybody was back at practice” doesn't specifically speak to Graham's true concussion status. A concussed player will be tested daily, including through days of practice that can have controlled contact like one-on-one drills (which would come under the label of "limited practice"). In order to return to game play, he will need a 2nd neurologist (if the team has one of its own which would be very atypical), independent of one employed by the team, evaluating him and concurring that he is appropriate to return to regular game play. That will unlikely occur before Sunday.

The thing is the Pats rely mostly on their TEs and Welker.

They only have one real outside treat in B. Lloyd.

I'm a little more concerned about Harris on Welker.

Maybe if JJo comes back we can put KJ on him at times

I was surprised to discover that we use 2 TE sets in ~85% of offensive plays.

Last year, according to ESPN Stats & Information, 80.5 percent of the Patriots' offensive plays were in two-tight end formations. And why not? Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez form the best tight end combo in football. Both have been hurt this year, so the Patriots have used more three-receiver sets, limiting the number of two-tight end plays to 57.2 percent. Well, the Texans have outdone the Pats. The Texans run 84.1 percent of their plays with two tight ends. link (http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/page/1stand10-12week14/biggest-nfl-games-week-14-john-clayton-first-10)

This was something I was saying in the preseason about how many times we load up with TEs. We ran 2 TEs a LOT and ran 3 TEs (usually from shifting Casey from FB over to a 3rd TE spot) quite a bit and even, on some rare occasions, with with 4 TEs -- usually bringing a tackle in. And this was my biggest fear with loosing Dreessen. I think we've seen a drop-off from Dreessen to Graham but I think Graham is getting better.

I think, but I could be wrong, that we've had more tackle eligible plays this season than in previous seasons. And I think some of that is because of needing a better blocker out there and missing Dreessen.

DAMN. Graham out.

http://blog.chron.com/ultimatetexans/2012/12/concussion-will-keep-texans-te-graham-sidelined-against-patriots/

he Texans announced today that Graham wouldn’t be making the trip to New England. That means fullback James Casey will get more action at tight end behind starter Owen Daniels.

Because coach Gary Kubiak loves to use two tight ends at once, expect Daniels and Casey on the field together. Casey starts at fullback, but could get more playing time at tight end more than any time this season.

The Texans were hoping Graham had recovered well enough to play. They followed the NFL protocol but elected today to give him another week.

"They elected" nothing..........the neurologist did not give him a clearance at the classic one week period (Sunday to Sunday-------today)..........and didn't feel there was any chance that the evaluation would change by game time.

Why? Casey slides into two TE sets and Clutts comes in if we need a FB.

This is far less of a problem than our secondary issues.

Because of McCain? Even if we had him or even Ball, it wouldn't matter all that much if we are unable to get pressure up front in our base. J Joe is back and ready to go.

We run a ton of two TE sets in this offense, and we lose flexibility w out Graham. Casey is a mere hybrid, and we need him coming out of the backfield. You aren't fooling anyone w Clutts at FB.

Besides, the secondary is an issue in and of itself. Like I was saying, we need all hands on deck regardless to have the best chance at pulling this one out. Our offense will need Martin to step up in this game.

Our TEs + FBs have won every head-to-head matchup with the opponents except one.

The two teams that are strong in this department were also outperformed by us: Denver and Detroit.

Often times, O.D. alone was enough.

The best an opponent can do against us was Lewis who had 3 catches for 40 yards and 2 TDs.
Graham beat him all by himself with 8 catches for 82 yards and 2 TDs.
O.D. & Casey added 9 for 77; the Jags had no other output from their TEs/FBs.

The only matchup we lost was to the Bears, when we attempted 7 fewer passes and O.D. didn't play. They had 2 more catches for 5 more yards.

What I was referring to was obvious holes in midfield that our D has a terrible time defending. Good TEs led by effective passers have taken routine advantage of this deficit.

That was a thing of the past, CNND.

Our LBs Sharpton (except for that debacle of a play when he first came back), Rudd, and Dobbins have been very solid in coverage.

Well call me a non-believer.

I'd like to see Dobbins (or whoever) nullify their backfield receivers like he did Ray Rice. That, I think, is one of the keys to this game. That little Woodhead fella, & Welker will be coming out of the backfield from time to time as well.

Then Vareen.... big play waiting to happen. Someone needs to smack him every time he goes into the flat, whether he gets the ball or not. He needs to be hearing footsteps. Clydesdale like footsteps.

We gave up 20 "inconsequential" yards on 4 catches to Chris Johnson (a 5-yd average.)
3 of the passes were on second and 10, the other one was on first and 20.
We also cut him off on a screen pass, forcing an incompletion.
No big deal.

I'm thinking when both Woodhead and Welker are in the game, we might be in dime.

Somebody is going to jump on Woodhead from the start and we may play press on Welker (all of our guys can do that).

Lloyd is not the biggest downfield treat we've seen; we may shade the single deep safety to help on Welker.
