View Full Version : Wade says he double up on Marshal "every play"

Houston Texans defensive coordinator Wade Phillip has been grinding through film of the Chicago Bears offense this week, and has come to a conclusion.

"They've only thrown it to one guy basically," Phillips said, via Tania Ganguli of the Houston Chronicle. "They do a great job of that."

That one guy, of course, is Brandon Marshall. The statistics outrageously back up Phillips' claim. Marshall has 797 receiving yards on the season; no one else on the Bears has more than 200 yards. Alshon Jeffrey's injury hasn't helped, but ultimately this is not a good thing for the Bears. Quality defenses won't just allow Marshall to run wild.

Cutler is in Nervana, after his GM gave him back his #1 receiver.

Remember.... Marshall wanted the Broncos to trade him after they
let Cutler go. Now that they're back together, Jay Cutler is settling into
a nice quarterback. This game will be hell on the Texans' defense, but
I can't wait to watch.

Brandon Marshall has 90 targets in 8 games.
Earl Bennett is next at 32.
Matt Forte has 28 targets.

Outside of Marshall and the TE Davis, the other primary receivers have missed at least one game.

Joseph & a safety should control Marshall. We have been pretty good shutting down the run but I am concerned with the RB coming out for a pass and who will handle the TE with Cush gone. I think we will show a more crowded box than usual.

Marshall's biggest weakness in the past has been poor TD production. But this season, he already has 7. The one thing that seems to account for this besides chemistry with Cutler is Marshall's continual illegal use of the hands, which by some strange reason almost always occurs away from the roving eyes of those extremely observant zebras.

same thing green bay did. they did whatever necessary to take away marshall for at least the first half and it completely bogged the chicago offense. martz doesnt have the patience to run forte 35 times, so we just have to keep the run game from getting a head of steam and remove marshall.

we match up pretty well with chicago in the secondary. both kareem and JJo play bigger receivers well, and mccain can run with hester (i dont think many realize how insanely fast mccain is). i'd personally put kareem and demps on marshall all game and let that be the end of it. their offensive line is also a bonus for us as they dont protect with more than 5 or 6 often, so watt and smith should have big days.

Guys... Wade Phillips was joking. A deadpan joke. He does that. #Texans are not going to double-team Brandon Marshall every play.

still makes sense. they're 7-1, that one coming from a team that doubled marshall all day - the only team to keep him under 70 yards (24) and the bears to 10 points. the bears dont function without marshall and turnovers from their defense.

Martz is no longer the Bears OC. Mike Tice (former Vikings HC) took over this season.

We have been pretty good shutting down the run....

:spit:

Our offense takes away the running game. Not the defense. Killing the clock with TOP & putting points on the board is the only way we've gotten teams to abandon the run, we haven't shut down anybody's run game.

but I am concerned with the RB coming out for a pass and who will handle the TE with Cush gone.

Ray Rice has probably been the most prolific coming out of the back field in a long time & Dobbins/Barwin handled him pretty well.

not a terrible gameplan really, Bears wideouts not named Marshall are pretty bad.

Is Jeffery going to play?

That would change things a bit.

Doesn't look like it.

LAKE FOREST, Ill. -- The Chicago Bears practiced Thursday without rookie receiver Alshon Jeffery, along with defensive tackle and Matt Toeaina (calf), and linebacker Brian Urlacher, who received the customary veteran's day off.

Jeffery is the only player of the group not expected to play Sunday when the Bears host the Houston Texans at Soldier Field, but the receiver hasn't been declared out officially.

"Alshon Jeffery is getting better," Bears coach Lovie Smith said. "He's not quite there yet."

Although there's a chance -- which looks slimmer by the day -- that Jeffery could return this week according to sources, the Bears plan to hold out the receiver against the Texans to minimize the risk of re-injury to his broken right hand, before bringing him back for a Nov. 19 matchup with the San Francisco 49ers.

With the way each player has played, I think it's safe to double. Joseph has been nursing an injury (though he did look better in the last game) and Marshall has been playing great over the last 3 or 4.

The Texans' front seven are going to shred Cutler's protection. He has already been sacked 28 times with 207 yards for loss, which is on track to top his worst year in 2010 when he was sacked 52 times. He has thrown 8 interceptions and fumbled 4 times this year. Schaub has been sacked 10 times, has thrown 4 interceptions and lost 1 fumble. The Texans have gone 5 out of 8 games without a turnover. Advantage Texans.

I predict 3 sacks and a forced fumble for JJ Watt...
