WWWAAAAAYYYYYYY back when the Oilers were in town the Astrodome was known as "The House Of Pain." I was just a kid then and am not too sure when the dome got branded with that name (I think it was during the Jerry Glanville era). I was just curiouse if any of you had a good nickname for reliant stadium. I know we havent defined ourselves as a team just yet but I figure this is as good a topic to toss around as any other during this neverending offseason.

Linebacker Robert Lyles is credited with that one. I'm fairly sure it was during the 1987 season. And yes, that was during the rise of Glanville. Eugene Seale and Lyles used to walk around the field in army fatigues and helmets before games. That's about the same time when Chuck Noll went after Glanville on the field following a game in the Dome for alleged headhunting. It was definintely a circus but at least football here was fun again after all those post LYB losing seasons.

Toro might take issue with Slaughterhouse.

we also could go retro and call it the House of Pain but the defense is gonna really have to live up to that one and and make the opposeing team pay

new idea...Death Row! it is along the same lines as Death Valley (scary, imposing and has a degree of finality to it) and it is relevent because of the texas/death penalty correlation. sounds cool thinking about a monday night game sometime in the future that berman opens with "with the colts here on death row, the texans look for their first ever sweep of indy in this monday night match up for the AFC south crown..."

and with that i bid you all a :goodnight ...until tomorow!

well our logo and mascot are bulls...we are technically the texans, a very broad term. the players can be "texan butchers" on the field but still use a bull as their symbol. remember knights that were supposed "dragon slayers" had dragons/griffin's and what have you on their shields/helmuts/armor. native americans killed buffalo/wolves/bears but still attempted to emulate them with names/behaviors. i too like The Slaughterhouse, naturally  , but i also see how it could be used against us in years of inevitable decline/rebuilding.

How about a similar one to the House of Pain:

Temple of Doom?

After that Blackout last year....I'm not sure anything with "Reliant", "Power" or "Energy" would be appropriate.

Bullpen describes a section in the stadium...which is actually the Bull's Pen during the Rodeo. Let that be special to those that reside there.

The Slaughterhouse is nice, but not sure how long it would be before PETA jumped on that grenade!

It has more than one meaning......Doom to the opponents......Temple to the fans (as in Football in Texas has a spiritual impact).

Or just go with Temple of Boom! Booming fans creating the most noise of any stadium in the NFL and the Defense laying the Boom to the opponents.

the whole basis behind a good nickname is that it just comes to you. Meaning.. you dont just go up to your friends and say "hey guys, i want a nickname, what do you think it should be?" and then have them call you whatever they come up with from then on.

Give it time.. how long were the Oilers around before the Astrodome picked up a nickname? Its not soemthing that just comes packaged with your "new nfl franchise do it yourself kit"

Right away it was being called "The Eighth Wonder of the World"

I think it is pretty dumb to try and come up with a nickname for the stadium. How many stadiums in the NFL have a nickname? What everyone should be doing is trying to make Reliant Stadium an intimidating place to play so everyone feels the same about the name "Reliant Stadium" as they do (or did) "Lambeau Field" or "Mile High Stadium" or "Three Rivers Stadium" or "Texas Stadium", etc.

So far we have done a pretty good job of being loud, but the Texans have been one of the worst home teams in the NFL. Once the Texans start winning at home, there will be no need to come up with a nickname for the stadium. Reliant Stadium will be good enough.

I agree, the nickname will come in time. I just threw out "The Bull Ring" in an earlier post because when I was in school, and two guys were about to fight, one would usually say "step into the bull ring." That was also the name of one of the football drills we ran during practice. I couldn't care less what the nickname is, I just want teams to hate coming here to play, between the noise and getting their a**es kicked.

I think the point of the nickname was to have some fun. I really don't think we will be setting the tone of the media here but we could possibly provide some food for thought. How about for a bit of retro Houston:

Honestly though. I know that the nickname will come in time. This is just a topic to get us off the mundane chit chat of the happenings of the neverending offseason. Some of the names i've heard have been horrible and some have been good, but honestly, none will probablly be heard of by the time a true nickname is in place. A word of caution, guys. I don't know if anyone brought this up yet because I haven't read a few pages of posts, but I seem to remember the Oilers dropping that "House of Pain" nickname because guys like Ernest Givens and company were getting their heads clocked by opposing DBs of teams who took offensive to that name (among other things, like Glanville's style of coaching, I suppose). I was in high school in those days and remember it pretty well. I loved that nickname, but I don't wanna see guys taking late shots (or otherwise illegal ones) at Johnson, know what I mean.

I don't remember the Oilers (trying to) dropping the name. We might not have used it (or had any reason to use it) the last few years....but, I don't remember us dropping the name, or recievers complaining.

Plus, this is football. You don't take extra shots because of the name of the stadium.

I seem to remember the active promotion of "House of Pain" - along with head coaches leaving tickets for dead people - going away when Glanville 'resigned' after the '89 season. There may have been some lingering effects into the following season - and along with it some opponent revenge for the audacity of it all - but from what I recall, Pardee's '90 team didn't officially or unofficially carry that forward. I'm sure some fans held HOP signs for a while and it probably took a while for it to die out in the media but the HOP gloss seemed to die as the coaching staff changed in '90 and the chuck 'n duck errrrr... the R&S (one big reason the WRs were getting hammered) became the newest sideshow.

It's was well documented that the HOP self declaration gave opponents extra incentive coming into the Dome but you can't argue with the Oilers home record of 16-3 during what I consider the HOP era.

Personally, I'm waiting for our defense to be good enough to have a nick-name.
It seems like all of the great NFL teams have had a great name for their defense.
