No one expected that much out of Houston Texans linebacker Brian Cushing heading into last season. He was coming off a PED-marred sophomore campaign where he simply didn't play as well as he did in his rookie season.

He was changing schemes to an inside linebacker in Wade Phillips' 3-4 defense and many thought he wouldn't fit. Instead, he put together a season that was worthy of Defensive Player of the Year consideration.

Debate: "Top 100" surprises

NFL Network continued with the "The Top 100: Players of 2012," rolling out Nos. 61-70. Our analysts debate the rankings. More ...

After not making our Top 100 players last year, Cushing checked in at No. 54. I've given the voters a lot of grief for some of their selections -- (Vilma, Really!?), but they nailed this one. Cushing deserves it. Let's hand out a few other awards.

From not appearing on the list at all, to basically near the top 50, that's an awesome accomplishment considering this is list is basically how much respect your peers have for you.

Hopefully he's in the top 40/30 next year.

I would peg him higher than 54.

I'd have him Top 30, easily. He didn't fade away after the trouble he had...he came back and has been as good as any LB out there.

Agreed, but remember that this was voted on by his peers, and Cush will always have that steroid stigma...

That's true, perhaps. My line of thought follows that Cush will continue to grow in Wade's scheme and as he does so will his performance. Barring anymore stain I believe his peers will continue to vote on his on the field performance and he will continue to rise in the rankings.

Of coarse, WTF do I know!

Man Cush is insane. Love it a leader that can replace Meco and a Hall of Famer one day. Put it down.

Man, that respect at the Baltimore game says it all about the D.

Harbaugh told Cushing "That defense is kicking ass." (referring to the Texans)

Love it!

That other Baltimore coach had even more respect than Harbaugh. He was really fired up to tell Cushing what he thought of the Texans. Who was that?

Cam Cameron, the Ravens offensive coordinator.
