05/07/2012 - Three Texas football players and a former Longhorns football player were arrested early Monday morning on East Sixth Street, including potential first-round picks in next year's NFL Draft and the only two senior starters on the 'Horns defense -- defensive end Alex Okafor and safety Kenny Vaccaro. Okafor, Vaccaro, and senior tight end Barrett Matthews were charged with failure to obey a lawful order, a misdemeanor, after police were called to a disturbance in downtown Austin at about 1:30 a.m. Monday morning. Eryon Barnett, a junior defensive back who announced his intentions to transfer from Texas last month, was also involved with the incident and was also charged with failure to identify himself. Barnett is currently in a Travis County jail. Both first-team All-Big 12 selections a year ago, Okafor and Vaccaro are defensive stalwarts set to be two of the Longhorns' best players, regardless of position or unit. As a junior, Okafor started every game, racking up 58 tackles, 14 of them for loss, including seven sacks. Meanwhile, Vaccaro, despite impressing professional scouts with an 82-tackle, two-sack, two-interception season, opted to not forego his senior season and declare for the NFL Draft. Many believed that Vaccaro would have been selected in the first or second round. Matthews, who has appeared in 38 games during his first three seasons at Texas, made two catches for nine yards last year. - Christian Corona, The Dallas Morning News

Too bad they will hardly be punished as Austin is known to let things slide for football players (e.g. Sergio Kindle crashing his car into an apartment complex because he was texting; was suspended for a game that didn't even matter).

I don't think Kindle was texting... I am willing to be he was intoxicated. It an odd way to circumnavigate laws by fleeing the scene.

Barnett is likely to get the worst of this, but I doubt it's going to cost him a spot on the team.

Okafor and Vacarro will likely be suspended for one maybe two early meaningless non-conference games.

Barnett is no longer on the team. He left before this incident.

Most likely kids being drunk and mouthing off. OKafor is a good kid, great grades, never in trouble etc... Kenny is a little bit of a hot head.

Be punished? This is for a freaking misdemeanor. I won't sit here and act like Texas players haven't gotten special treatment before when catching cases or getting in trouble, but they have also been targeted and jacked with more at times because they are football players.

From reading this incident, it doesn't sound like they did anything major, and for all we know it might have been the police causing the problems and they just didn't have great attitudes about it. I'm not saying that was the case or anything, but this isn't anything that sounds like it's that big of a deal.

As far as Sergio Kindle goes, I'm sure the was drunk for sure when that happened, but you can't exactly charge a guy with drunk driving and make it stick when the guy wasn't even there to be tested or to do a field sobriety test on after it happened. He left the scene of the accident.

Failure to obey an order with no resisting arrest, this sounds like a non issue. I think they were waiting for a pizza and the officer told them to move along. They probably wanted their pizza and the cop probably got a little nervous when he took a look at how big Okafor is and overreacted. Don't think this will hurt his or Vaccaro's draft stock.

A buddy of mine bounces at one of the bars down the street. He said Barnett, Okafor, and Vaccaro got denied entry at his place because they were already too drunk and rowdy. Matthews was apparently the DD and appeared sober, didn't give anybody any trouble.

Apparently after they left they got into a shouting match down the street that the police were called to. It was broken up and all parties were sent on their way with no issues. They then went to the pizza place and were being really rowdy there as well. Police came and tried to get them to quiet down. They wouldn't, so the police took them. They all identified themselves except for Barnett, who is probably the only one who will face any charges. That's just a stupid thing to do.

Seems like a case of a couple of college kids who had too much to drink. Not a big deal. Suspend them a game for being knuckleheads.

How come everyone is Irish and a happy drunk on St. Patty's but otherwise ugly drunks on other occasions, other than those of us that are actually Irish???
