The goal is not to punt, and you drafted a punter. That was the first thing a reporter in Jacksonville said to coach Mike Mularkey after the pick.

“And hold, hold for extra points,” Mularkey said. “If you want to write about him, he’s a really good holder for extra points and field goals, and he just so happens to be a difference-maker when it comes to punting.”

Oh, he holds, too? Well, that changes everything.

You can't make this stuff up :D

I wonder if this is a statement about the Jags' confidence in Blaine Gabbert...

It certainly made me feel better about the Posey pick.

I'm just shocked that they have a fan with more than 3 teeth.

What are the guys saying about this guy on the Jags board??? You know it has to be fabulous.

I wonder if they have members on their board who are defending the pick and saying that we shouldn't crticize it because their scouts have more information than we do and therefore they are automatically better than anyone else

Slight difference between taking a player that people don't like at a position they wanted addressed and taking a punter in the 3rd. No?

I was joking, mostly. But I think the point still stands a little. The logic I'm hearing is that if they have more information and are paid, it follows that their decisions should be better than ours. If they took a P in the 3rd, they must have had a reason. They also definitely needed a P

So why trash this pick but then defend us taking a guy with a late round grade in the same round?

Mainly because I don't think the difference between a 3rd round punter and a UDFA punter is near the gap that the Texans likely had between Posey and say either Randel or Sanu. Also I wouldn't be opposed to taking a punter, not in round 3, as a running first team with an improving D field position will be important. Add to that I think the Jags had much more pressing needs than P. There is only so much of a contribution that any P can make, no mater how good he is.

Well that and it's a division rival, so smack must and will be talked.

I guess they were still in shock after drafting Blackmon...

They drafted their MVP...what's the problem? Him and MJD going to duke it out every series.

"I think it’s first downs that you gain,” Smith said in a further defense of the pick. “And I feel like in the third round it’s not a round that you always get proven starters.”

That sounds awfully familiar. If I'm not mistaken didn't Capers/Casserley make those kind of statements when they were running this organization?

Yes, that's one of Casserly's mantras. He's got all sorts of stats about how many pro bowl players come from each round and how long an average player in a given round stays in the league. In the shows leading up to the draft, he brushed all that stuff off and spewed it again.

Odd how much better our drafts have been since he left.

I just wanted to throw this in to the discussion. Greg Montgomery was selected in the 3rd round of the 1988 Draft by the Oilers. Ray Guy, who is a HOFer, was drafted in the 1st round by the Raiders in the 1973 Draft. Special Teams can give or take away momentum. Not such a bad pick, IMO.

Funny, I thought of Ray Guy when Jacksonville made their pick. I remember him consistently putting the opponent in bad field position. Used to drive me nuts.
