Mercilus the LB out of Illinois.

Mayock has him as a natural edge rusher. Look at his family! They LOVE IT!

So the Titans and the Jags go with WR. We counter and say "Oh yeah? We're going defense...again...and we're going to hurt you. HURT you."

Mayock says Rick Smith has become one of the better GMs in the league now.

From the Walter Football blog...

With the No. 26 pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, the Texans select Whitney Mercilus, DE/OLB

10:29: Another correct pick I had in a recent mock draft. FML.

10:30: So, the Texans added a pass-rusher... wait, hear a girly yelp coming from Jacksonville's war room? That's Blaine Gabbert, who is hiding under the table.

The Texans are officially in the ranks of the smarter franchises in football now. There were so many dumb moves made tonight that I am very proud that Rick Smith stayed pat and didn't try to reach like other teams did tonight. I've read about four scouting reports on him so far, and I'm beginning to fall in love with this pick. Our D is going to be scary. About the worst thing I've read so far is he's a one year wonder in college. But even still, that one year was frigging fantastic.

The reports I've been reading he can play either 4-3 end or 3-4 OLB, and do well at both. He was on some folks boards as high as an upper 15 slot pick in the 1st round all the way to top of the 2nd round.

I liked the imposing strength of Perry form the footage I saw tonight. I like the USC tradition of producing strong, killer instinct defensive guys.

I am wondering why we went Mercilus and not Nick Perry?

I liked the imposing strength of Perry form the footage I saw tonight. I like the USC tradition of producing strong, killer instinct defensive guys.

Can anyone here calm my fears and tell me why Mercilus is a better outside guy for us than Nick Perry would have been? I think Green Bay and Dom Capers loved that Perry was there for them. Maybe both teams got what they wanted?

Mercilus is a more fluid athalete and more in the mold of a Demarcus Ware. He should excel in this defense.

Not to make it sound better than it is, but Perry was more like trying to squeeze him in to the OLB position. Mercilus is more natural and mobile all along the line, yet with his frame he isn't so much of a push to get him standing up in that OLB position...even better than Brooks Reed, probably.

Perry is great, but I think in Wade's system he would need a little bit more work as an OLB.

LOL, David Wilson skids into the first round by the skin of his teeth, just like the draft board told him he would

Walter Football had Mercilus ranked ahead of Perry. They had Mercilus as a possible top 20 pick while Perry was a 2nd round prospect that could get pushed into the first round if there was a run on pass rushers.

Mercilus is younger. He led the NCAA in sacks last year, iirc.

Mercilus and his size, ability, and production remind me of Demarcus Ware. Does that do it for you? Much more fluid looking athlete than Perry too. Perry looks a little stiff.

Thanks to all who have posted.

I'm mos def OK with DeMarcus Ware-type of guy.

Yeah, looking back at Perry...I can see the stiffness. I just felt like he was more powerful. He has that bull rush going on, but he'll be facing bigger guys in the NFL every Sunday too.

Now that I read you guys' comments, maybe Perry was GB's consolation prize. Could turn out that GB wanted Mercilus but settled for Perry. And if that's the case...why didn't GB trade up to beat us to the punch for Mercilus?

Well, doesn't matter. Because WE got Mercilus. LOL.

Could turn into murderer's row along that Texans front 7 now. And we even have Bradie James too. And Dobbins comes back. I think we can pencil in Cushing, Reed, Barwin, Mercilus, Dobbins, and James at LB for the final roster. Braman makes it as a special teamer and LB depth again. Sharpton might squeak into the lineup somehow. That's eight total LBs...2-deep at LB.

Glad we have depth there again. With Mario leaving and Ryans being traded, it looked like we would be a little short at the LB/DE position. Mercilus and James helps.

SERIOUSLY?!?!?!

LMAO! OMG, what a BAD choice. This is a bizarre first round.

Actually this was a great pick for that spot. The guy was moving up boards and many think he will turn out to be one of the top defensive players out there. Got him at 21 and then added a rock of an ILB. Thought they were smart. JMO

Horrible pick! BUST in the making. Super slow getting off the line.

Anyone else surprised to see the Pats jump in front of us for Hightower? I was sure they were going to snag our OLB.

I was worried about the exact same thing. When they announced Hightower's name, I was like ......:whew

That us very debatable. Both Mayock and a few others said he could end up being the top defensive player from the 1st round in 3 years. I trust Mayock more than most. For that position I loved pick. It's just like a few people saying Merclius is Ware like yet he is there at 26. Go figure. Each team treasures different things and yet these guys lasted this long. Crap shoot

2. New England Patriots: Too often in past years, the Patriots got a little too cute. They'd trade a choice for a future first-rounder. They'd trade back and acquire more draft choices than they had roster spots for rookies. On Thursday, Bill Belichick made two wise trades, and finally got a pass-rusher (Chandler Jones from Syracuse) and a quality inside linebacker (Dont'a Hightower of Alabama). Those were significant and telling moves. It shows the Patriots might be moving back into a 3-4 defense, but now they can do it with two young linebackers who can rush. Jones is quick from the outside. Hightower can rush from the inside. The Patriots have only two remaining draft choices, but the two trades cost them only two fourth-round picks.

Yesterday on Twitter..Mayock and Mike Lombardi..from Evan Silva

NFL Network's Mike Lombardi on Chandler Jones: "I think what Mike Mayock said is right. He is the best defensive player in the draft."

Dont they already have a David Wilson on this team? Ahmad Bradshaw? I guess they really do take BPA.

Wilson: Height: 5-9 Weight 205 Age: 20

Bradshaw: Height: 5-10 Weight: 214 Age: 26

Right? I did not see the Texans taking Hightower. I guess they also jumped Bengals, Packers, Vikings, 49ers. And we can assume the Texans had no interest in trading down to 31 and losing a guy named Mercilus.

last 10 years sack leaders:

2000 Julius Peppers --- 1st Round, Pick 2
2001 Dwight Freeney --- 1st Round, Pick 11
2002 Terrell Suggs --- 1st Round, Pick 10
2003 Bo Shobel --- 4th Round
2004 Johnathan Goddard --- 6th Round
2005 Elvis Dumervil --- 4th Round
2006 Ameer Ismail --- undrafted
2007 George Selvie --- 7th round
2008 Phillip Hunt --- undrafted
2009 Von Miller --- 1st Round, Pick 2
2010 Da'Quan Bowers --- 2nd Round
2011 Jarvis Jones --- in college

Put me in that group - Peppers, Freeney, Suggs and Von Miller. All led the nation in sacks, all had elite/sufficient enough measurables to follow that success with status of being chosen in the first round. On occassion, the sack lead is a product of the system, perhaps, which is why some of the sack leaders don't follow up with pro success. For instances where a sack leader followed with a first round selection, the results have been overwhelmingly positive.

What would be helpful if someone has time to list 32 teams and their picks for say 2 thur 4th rounds? Lots of trades yesterday & I would appreciate the effort.
