Season 10 has ended (unfortunately) and so I thought it would be fun to do a All Decade Depth Chart. I am going off of the HT website depth chart to save the confusion of using a 3-4,4-3 etc etc. Offense plus Defense equals 51 Players (obviously the punter and kicker would finish it the roster.

http://www.houstontexans.com/team/depth-chart.html

Offense
POS (parenthesis is the number of players that the Texans carried)
WR1 (3)AJ, Kevin Walter,Jabar Gafney

There should be an All-Decade depth chart for both our best players ever and the worst. The worst one would be fun. Would probably bring back too many bad memories though.

Hey now, there's no reason to force people to remember Matt Stevens, DeMingo Graham, Jimmy Herndon, Jabari Issa, or the glass man himself, Bennie Joppru. Let sleeping dogs lie.

Just kidding. But that post was brutal!

Is this all-decade team only taking into account how good the player was while he played for the Texans? So no Eric Moulds or Ahman Green, when both were superstars during their prime years for other teams? That sort of thing I'm wondering about.

Other mentions...

The 2nd RB is DD (not Ben Tate...DD has earned that role and Ben Tate hasn't put in enough work)

The backup FB is not vickers...it's Moran Norris (who blocked for DD), who after leaving Houston has had a VERY successful career blocking for Frank Gore. Vickers has ran into the back of his lineman or missed blocks altogether way too much for me to elevate him over the player that Norris was. Norris was our "irreplaceable FB", before Leach became that...both FBs were better than Vickers.

The backup center/guard is Steve McKinney

Our starting RG is Briesel...he's earned it

And despite being a complete ****head, the lead KR is Jerome Mathis. Despite being a turd and a flash in the pan player, that guy made really really fast players look really slow and could hit the smallest of creases and do a house call...what a waste in talent, if he had his head on straight and his hammy stayed healthy we could be saying "Hester who?" Still to this day the most explosive player that's been on a Texans roster.

Which doesn't mean anything. One play is one play and nothing more. Joel Dreesen has been >>>>> than Miller.

Just list the 2011 roster. This is far and away the best team and individual players that we've ever fielded. I would add Glenn and Payne to the list, though.

I'd add Jabbar Gaffney also. Seeing how well he did in N.E. with Brady throwing to him, I wonder how effective he could have been had Schaub been QB when he was here. At the very least he would have taken the #3 WR from Jacoby and possibly challenged Walter for #2.

Edit: What the hell, might as well go all in...

Offense
POS (parenthesis is the number of players that the Texans carried)
WR1 (3) A.J., A. Davis
LT. (2) Duane Brown, ????
LG. (2) Chester Pitts, W. Smith
C.. (2) Chris Myers, S. McKinney
RG. (2) M. Briesel, F. Weary
RT. (2) Eric Winston, E. Salaam (he wasn't great but it took a 1st pick to displace him)
TE. (3) Owen Daniels, Joel Dreessen, Casey
WR2 (2) Kevin Walter, Jabbar Gaffney
QB. (3) Matt Schaub, Sage Rosefels, T.J. Yates
RB. (3) Arian Foster, D. Davis-Williams, B. Tate
FB. (2) Leech, Vickers (isn't this the first year we actually carried 2 FBs?)

Defense

POS
LDE (2) J.J. Watt, G. Walker
.DT (2) Seth Payne, S. Cody
RDE (2) A. Smith, A. Weaver (who knows what he could have done under Wade's scheme)
SLB (2) M. Williams, C. Barwin
ILB (2) D. Ryans, T. Dobbins
ILB (2) B. Cushing, J. Sharper
WLB (2) B. Reed, K. Wong
LCB (3) J. Joseph, M. Coleman, J. Reeves (hey, he's 3rd string)
RCB (3) A. Glenn, D. Robinson, ????
.SS (2) G. Quin, M. Pollard (had to switch these; Quin covers better)
.FS (3) D. Manning, M. Coleman, M. McCree

Perhaps it's just me but it seems a bit sad to me that Sage is our 2nd best QB....

Some tough calls. Seth Payne deserves the DT spot. DD/DW deserves the #2 RB spot. You have to find a way to get Jamie Sharper on the team. Perhaps you set the depth chart as the 3-4, have Cushing and Barwin outside and Sharper and Demeco inside. That right there would be a scary good defense.

And just for him being an *******, I vote that Dunta has no spot on this team. But with Joseph and Glenn at CB with maybe Quinn backing them up (since I think you have to put Coleman and McCree at safety) we would have a dominant secondary.

Finally, put Steve McKinney at RG. The guy was great for us.

I'm bored, so what the hell? Here goes nothing...

QB: Carr, former NFL Europe MVP Dave Ragone, Symons
RB: Hollings, Wells, Morency ("Merciless" James Allen just misses the cut)
FB: Baxter
WR1: Mathis, Bradford, Jermaine Lewis
TE: Joppru, Hill, Holloway
LT: Boselli, Wand
LG: Graham, Brown
C: Flanagan, Hodgdon
RG: Riley, Weigert
RT: Wade, Young, I-65 Jordan Black
WR2: Jones, Moulds

3-4 defense
DE: Okoye, Hill, Weaver
NT: DeLoach, Ioane
DE: Johnson, Robaire Smith
LOLB: Babin, Foley
LILB: Polk, Foreman
RILB: Greenwood, Adibi
ROLB: Peek, Clemons
LCB: Buchanon, Molden
FS: Stevens, Hutchins
SS: Earl (we had him rated as a 1st round pick!), Curry Burns (awesome name that deserves recognition)

I decided to err on the side of players that actually had some expectations placed on them, as opposed to just picking the most awful players in team history.

As for the All-Decade team, take the 2011 team and add Leech, Dom Davis, Gaffney, Pitts, Walker, Sharper, and Glenn. Remove as necessary.

Finally, put Steve McKinney at RG. The guy was great for us.

He really wasn't. He was a weak link on a line that included Seth Wand, Zach Wiegert, and Todd Wade. Let that sink in for a second. The majority of the pressure during the bad years came from up the middle when he was here. I can't tell you how many times I saw a DT blow up McKinney, flush Carr out of the pocket, then Carr takes a sack from the end, which is faulted in the stat sheet to the OT, when it was really McKinney's fault.

Fair enough. If people are going to add Gaffney then you could make a case for Barwin.

When I think about the "all-decade #2 WR", it really illustrates how crappy we've been at that position. :gun: That is a need that MUST be addressed this offseason.

http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/stats/_/id/3561/jabar-gaffney

Even though I quoted DocBar on this, it is not really aimed at him, he was just the last I saw to reference the production on other teams thing. Anyway, the link above are Gaffney's stats. He actually (yardage wise at least) was just as good or better for us than he was for the Pats. He did not get much more till he went to the broncos and now redskins (who really lacked WRs).

I would argue he did enough for us to at least make a run at a backup #2 WR slot. Outside of AJ and Walter, who have we had that has done more at WR?

Edit:
Also, on Babin, that guy is really over rated. He is obviously a pass rushing force, but half of that has come from playing the wide nine. Not only does it put him out of the way for run stuffing, but he could care less about stopping the run anyway, all he wants is sack stats. It drives me insane with ends refuse to play the run

I rounded it out your roster.. some of the last parts of the picks were tough .

I kept it in line with what the Texans did this year (link on OP)
I know it is debatable, but I thought Keep Vickers and move Casey to TE (you could still work mismatches at times)

added mine it bold.. sadly we have had a very weak group of WR's over the years minus AJ
if the stats I looked up was right Eric Moulds had 57 catches for 554 yards in 2006

Also made me think of if Fred Bennett would have benefited with this coaching staff and front 7 and aid in his development

Threads like this make me wonder how much we're overrating the hell out of Charles Spencer.. We're talking about a 3rd round pick here who only played... count em' 2 games in his entire career.. and you have posters like Scooter putting him ahead of Duane Brown on his "all decade" team. :kubepalm: (Speaking of which.. how does Casey even make the list at FB? He's done nothing at FB to really speak of thus far. Leach, Norris, and Vickers are all ahead of him right now.)

Look, I have no doubt that if he was able to stay healthy, Spencer would've been a good player.. but the ability to withstand injury and stay healthy is also what makes you a good player and the fact that he was only able to play 2 games in this league means nobody knows for sure what type of player he would've been. Charles Spencer might as well be named Bill Brasky around here and he's turning into a local legend.. In part by, because we were so hungry for a quality tackle at the time that once we finally saw a player that had a remote hint of ability we all gravitated towards him and declared him "the shit". With only playing 2 games the sample size is WAY too small and Charles Spencer could've easily been a bust as he could've been a boom in this league. He has no place on this "all decade" team and I'd put Ephraim Salaam ahead of him. If you want to start a "what could've been" all decade team, then by all means.. throw him up there.

I threw Gaffney's name into the mix because it wasn't his fault that he played with a guy who couldn't get him the ball. Dude could catch - had a 55 reception year when we went 2-14 and 40+ receptions the year before. I often wonder what he could have done with Schaub.
