New Orleans at San Fran is just about to get going.

Looks like a great matchup to me. SF will have to come out and try and keep it tight - the longer this game is within a score, the more you have to like the 49ers to win. The Saints could have the game won early though - they're receiving the ball first, and easily have the talent to put this game to bed before the half. A classic offensive team vs defensive team matchup.

Woooo...thank goodness the week is finally over. It's football time!

Oh boy - New Orleans drive grinds to a stop - save for a big Pass Interference call. Don't agree with that at all.

NO with the ball still, 1st and 10 at the SF 20.

Just saw two great hits by Whitner.... forgot which receiver, but as soon as he catches the ball, Whitner hits him in the hip, wraps him up & takes him down.

No defenseless receiver rule, since he didn't launch himself, use the crown of the helmet, or hit the receiver above the shoulders.....

That last one, Whitner hits the runner, helmet to helmet & all that, knocked the dude out, I think...... but he's a running back & that's legal.

This league still has a lot of hard hitting.

Not that I agree with the pussification of football, but how was that not a helmet to helmet hit?

Thomas had established himself as a runner after the catch, Runners have no helmet to helmet protection, just "receivers" and Quarterbacks, "receivers are anyone in the process of making a catch, after they make a "football move" which basically means they have gained enough awareness to protect themselves as a runner, they can be hit helmet to helmet.

The outcome of the game is completely dependent on the 49ers defense. They need to play the whole 60 like they've started. The Saints can easily go on a 3 possession run and rattle up 21 points.

The score shouldn't affect SF too much - their main focus in this game has still got to be ball security and disrupting Bree's rhythm.

Oh yeah, I know - it was dumb luck that allowed him to run it in. My point was that defensively, the Saints played it pretty well - it was just one of those things that happen during a game.

INT for the 49ers - and a great return to bring it down to the 5 of the Saints. Wow....big momentum for the 49ers now!

The first fumble - definitely agree with you, that was a top notch defensive play.

However, the INT and the muff and fumble from the kick return for me were more because of the Saints than the outstanding nature of the play of the 49ers.

Yeah, those things plus the preseason fight, I've grown to despise Shockey even though he's at home probably going over the Star Spangled Banner tape so he can grade both team's respect-o-meter, hearing day-in and day-out on Austin's newscast "Austin's own Westlake alum Drew Brees," I just never liked them. Agree. Frank Gore should be hitting 25-30 carries today. If you're going to have to kick the ball away with a lead, do it after keeping the clock ticking.

This Saints drive is going to be very important in the context of this game. If the 49ers go to the locker room with a 17-7 lead, they're in a great position to come in a burn some time from the kickoff.

They let 7 points slip here, they're looking over their shoulder, and probably continuing to throw more, which I think would lose them the game.

Was going to disagree with you because he's ran for over 1200 yards this year, but looking at the game logs and it looks like he's struggled some the 2nd half of the season. He went over 1,200 yards this year, at an average of 4.3 YPC. I think he's got enough to grind out some first downs, and carry the workload. Especially after a quiet start carry wise to this game. He isn't as explosive as he was, but his YPC has been consistent for years now.

As silly as it is I think NO has this.

It wasn't the worst pick in the world though. Big return aside, the worst that was going to come out of that play was a solid field position. If he completes then it's deep into 49er territory.

Now the 49ers have their chance to be pass happy!

One timeout left, and will be receiving a punt with pretty good field position.

TexanSam

This is the longest two minutes ever lol. Niners can't do anything, punt. Saints can't do anything, INT. Niners can't do anything, punt. Saint's can't do anything, punt. Niners just need 15-20 yards and they're in FG range.

And of course the Niners fumble. Now the Saints just need 15 more yards for a FG. I bet Brees gets sacked to end the half.

Time to find a medium length pass and get a FG set up. 3 points here would be great for the 49ers. They could come out in the 2nd half, run the ball, take some time off the clock, and if they can get another FG, still end up with the 2 score lead.

Well 17-14 at the half.

What a weird half of football. Turnover after turnover for the 49ers, and they've let the Saints right into it.

I can't see the 49ers winning it at the moment. They've had a lot of big plays in the 1st half, and a bit of luck as well. Unless their gameplan shifts to an effective clock burning running game, I don't see them winning.

Saints Oline went back to getting abused again like in the 1st QTR near the end of the half. 49'ers D is going to need another herculean effort like it had in the 1st QTR if they want a chance.
