Is the NFL rule that they have to switch the feed to a COMMERCIAL break? I would be okay with it if they waited until the last possible second before the first snap...

But to a commercial break for a solid minute, then a pre-game show for the Cowgirls?

Hell no, that should NOT be allowed. :wild:

Yes, I believe the NFL rules force it at a specific time of day, not when the opening kickoff occurs -- not even if you're cutting over to a commercial when another tight game has :08 left. Asinine, but it is what it is.

What is the rule. Why are they required to switch over to the Cowboys game?

Because (yuck) the Cowboys are considered the "home territory" for all of Texas (maybe not the Houston market, but everyone else), which means they force a switch at a certain time because the NFL won't let us potentially miss the opening kickoff of a (yuck) Cowboys game.

Atleast you got most of the game on TV. Lubbock jumped on the Tebow bandwagon and showed the Vikings/Broncos game. The Vikings have 2 wins...

I'm pretty sure they switched to the affiliate that was carrying the pukes...and that station was probably on a commercial break...still sux tho

That's frustrating. I'm glad we only have one more game on FOX and we don't have to worry about the Cowboys that week (week 15).

Maybe it is partially Fox's fault. They are required to give everyone the full Cowboys game, but I think they switched all these affiliates over a few minutes before required to at 4:15. Here's a wiki explanation:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NFL_on_television#Mid-game_switches

If the local team is scheduled for the late game of a doubleheader, it has importance over any early game. If 4:15 p.m. arrives, and the early game is ongoing, the primary affiliate (all games) and secondary affiliates (road games) are required to cut off the early game and switch to the start of the local team's game. Additional affiliates, including secondary affiliates for home games, may also request to cut off an early game for a nearby team's late start. This is common in Texas where many affiliates which are not considered secondary markets by the NFL still switch out of early games in order to get to the start of a 4:15 Dallas Cowboys game.

So maybe this *was* required, but not until 4:15, so I'd think Fox had its non-Houston "affiliates" in Texas all pull the plug a few minutes earlier than required. Boo.

My local FOX, XHRIO out of McAllen, Harlingen South Texas area showed the game in it's entirety, no interuption here, so it appears it was the local affiliate's decision to cut away, not FOX or NFL rules.

But what I don't understand is that *all* the Fox affiliates that did cut away ALL did so at the same moment. Maybe the affiliate makes the decision ahead of time and the network moves them all over to other coverage at the same time?

The station you mention starts with "X" so presumably it's physically in Mexico. Not sure if that matters in terms of the rules.

Also, I think south Texas is listed as a Texans market. Why I dunno... same with Beaumont and CC.

*edit: Think Ziggy's more right on this one.

I emailed KABB... I know it isn't them and i know it won't do any good.. it is a corporate thing but I emailed them saying basically.. whoever is throwing the switch ...think a bit..most fans will enjoy a game where it comes down to a play or two.. or even OT...I figure they will give that up over the kick off start of another game.

Now that I know the rule, the thing that frustrates me the most is that FOX switched over to a couple of commercials before going to the Cowboys game. They could have continued showing the Texans game for 1 more minute instead of showing the commericals. That would have been enough time to watch the ending.

Even if what KTBC saying is true about the rule, there was no good excuse for blaming the rule IN THIS CASE. Had they waited until 3:15 instead of cutting over at 3:09 or 3:10, they could have shown the entire game -- and their voicemail, e-mail and Facebook feeds don't get crushed with a bunch of angry fans.

When the game is over before 3:15 you can't blame the rule.

Same switch at KYLE in Bryan-College Station. That's the cities that are 1.5 hours from Houston, but 3 hours from Dallas.

I have to wonder, if both games were being carried on the CBS affiliate, would the same thing have happened? Personally, I doubt it...

It might be that the NFL is the one to contact, if this is really an NFL rules issue. About 15 years ago, I had an issue regarding TV coverage, and wrote a letter to the NFL. I was amazed to receive a direct, and personal, response letter from them.

----------------

I posted on their site the email that Wolf got from an affiliate that essentially exposes their BS about "it was on the NFL" so we'll see what they say. Feel free to keep barraging them even if you don't live here.....

For those that think me and other Austinites are obsessing on this, keep in mind for a solid year or 2 we barely got to see games ON CBS thanks to VY being with the Titans so Tenessee was essentially the home games so Horn jock swingers could keep reliving the glory days and Houston fans in Austin were forced to go to sports bars every weekend as if we lived in a whole different part of the country. So this is a sensitive issue where we feel we get screwed as Texans fans a lot here in Austin.

Keep in mind we are IN Austin, closer to Houston than Dallas and especially Tenessee, so this is complete bull shit.

KTBC is considered a home market for the Dallas Cowboys and is subject to the NFL mandatory kickoff rules. NFL rules dictate that we must begin coverage of the Cowboys game at the scheduled kickoff time. FOX Sports is responsible for the timing of the mandatory kickoff transition. It is not under the control of the local affiliate. We apologize for not being able to provide the Austin viewers with the conclusion of the Houston Texans game.

It is complete and total BS.
Most teams also designate secondary markets. In order to be designated as a secondary market, a portion of it must be located within 75 miles of the stadium. Not all teams designate all markets within 75 miles as secondary markets. For instance, the Bengals designate Dayton, Ohio and Lexington, Kentucky as their secondary markets, although not Louisville even though Louisville stations reach within 75 miles of Cincinnati.

Primary and secondary markets are required to air all road games of the team in question, and are not allowed to air blacked out home games (see below).

Just because all (or most) games of a given team air in a given market does not necessarily mean it is a designated secondary market. Again, the ONLY markets that can be designated secondary are those whose stations reach within 75 miles of the stadium. For instance, all stations in Texas air Cowboys games whenever possible, but only those whose signals reach within 75 miles of Cowboys Stadium are officially secondary markets.
