View Full Version : Svitek's Strong Streak

Will Svitek continues to quietly do his job, holding a string of talented pass rushers to no sacks in five straight games. The left tackle’s performance continued against the Vikings when he shut Jared Allen, who had 13.5 sacks coming into Sunday, out of the game. The recent surge by Matt Ryan isn’t a coincidence. Svitek has given Ryan the time needed to do his damage.

As the saying goes, if you’re not hearing an offensive lineman’s name, that probably means he’s doing his job.

Falcons left tackle Will Svitek is doing his job about as well as anyone at the position right now, when he began starting in Week 7 against the Detroit Lions. Since then, he’s faced the likes of Will Smith, Kyle Vanden Bosch and Dwight Freeney, to name a few, and hasn’t allowed a sack yet.

Svitek’s biggest test came in last Sunday’s win over the Minnesota Vikings when he lined up opposite Jared Allen, a pass rusher who 13.5 sacks are second in the NFL this season. His 96.5 sacks since he began playing in 2004 are the most in the league in that time span.

The season began with Sam Baker at the position, but an injury forced him from the lineup in Week 7. Since, Svitek has filled in admirably, creating a situation that Atlanta’s coaching staff has had to monitor closely. Baker was available to play last week, but the Falcons continued to ride the hot hand of Svitek.

Allen is a sack master so plus there but Freeney hasn't been Freeney-like in a while and especially not on that lump of a team. KVB is old and overrated. W Smith is overpaid but he's not a scrub or anything. Just not a bunch of real impressive names to throw around. I wonder how he will do facing Barwin, Reed and Watt and against a 3/4 team. The #1 team in the land, no less.

it is impressive, but a 34 can take a good olinemen out of his game quick. In 43's, you know pretty much exactly what is about to happen. 34's can disguise things much more.

Another tackle taken ahead of Duane Brown in 2008.
