View Full Version : Unconfirmed source says Texans are signing Garrard

Unconfirmed source (but pretty solid) says the Texans are going to sign David Garrard. As long as the contract is reasonable I'm fine with it. He'll be a better backup than TJ Yates, and it'll be just that much more fun to bust the Jags again with him on the roster.

Sounds credible... They're not making this decision until Schaub is on IR... Plus, Garrard had back surgery, and I'm pretty sure he's out for season.

Me either. "Time Machine" is starting against the Jags. No player in existence other than Matt Schaub is more prepared to start that game. Beyond that it's possible that the Texans might entertain other ideas but a lot of that is dependent on how well Leinart plays against Jacksonville.

I'm sure that another "unspectacular" veteran QB is in the cards if we won't be seeing Schaub again this season. I doubt it would be Garrard.

Several reports said that DG needs IMMEDIATE surgery for Disc Hernia (10/17).

While waiting for CNND to give his take, I found this on Wiki:

Surgery should only be considered as a last resort after all conservative treatments (non-surgical therapy) have been tried, that did not alleviate the pain and heal the disc herniation. Also, surgery is indicated if a patient has a significant neurological deficit.[35] The presence of cauda equina syndrome (in which there is incontinence, weakness and genital numbness) is considered a medical emergency requiring immediate attention and possibly surgical decompression.

Doesn't sound too good!

For what it's worth, my opinion is that he would be brought in to backup Leinart, it's too late in the year for him to be a #1 option unless Leinart completely tanks or is injured.

Can we stop with these threads?

Garrard had back surgery this year and is not available.

http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/7114405/david-garrard-surgery-not-option-oakland-raiders-jason-campbell-injury

David Garrard has a herniated disk and is going to schedule back surgery this week, he told ESPN senior NFL analyst Chris Mortensen. The Oakland Raiders had reached out to the free-agent quarterback in the wake of Jason Campbell's broken collarbone but Garrard informed the team that he is not available.

"The Raiders were in contact with my agent, Al Irby, last night and he was straight with them about my back problem, that I also was having a second opinion today. So it's disappointing because I wanted to play but my doctor says this surgery won't prevent me from playing next year," Garrard told ESPN.

Honestly i bet going 2-4 could get us into the playoffs, the Titans are who they are and they have some tough games i don't see them winning. And with the level of competition we play i think that should be manageable.

What are you basing Leinart off of though? The preseason where he throws dumpoffs to backups with backup lineman blocking for him, or the one from Arizona where it just never seemed to fit right for him? Just curious, but i doubt we can call him finished when he hasn't even gotten a real chance HERE yet.

EDIT: And how are we not in control with a 1.5 game lead in our division?

Alien UFO's landed in Reliant stadium and left behind a 3rd string QB for us. He's got six arms, weighs 300 lbs, and is 6'7" of pure muscle.

Unfortuantly he's from Mars, and because he grew up with less gravity, he can't get off the bench without breaking something. We really need to get rid of Rick Smith for signing these type of players.

I am basing this on ALL of it. Leinart's failures in Arizona. The iffy preseason. I also cringed watching him make uncomfortable handoffs verses Cleveland. Leinart has been in the league for 6 years and is relegated to sitting on the bench hoping for an injury because he can't beat anybody out for the starting job. Not even Derek Anderson.

2-4 may very well limp us into the playoffs to go with a quick exit. If that excites you... then... I guess it does. My hopes are of the championship kind. That came crashing down when Schaub kicked it with his cinder block. Our season's over. Stick a fork in 'em. We're toast.

We are no longer in control because we lost our starting quarterback. No more. No less. It makes no difference if we're ahead one or two games after this Sunday.

ALL of the reports that Garrard was to have "emergency" disc surgery were around 10/18/11. We have not heard a peep since then about him having the surgery or what surgery it was or how he did or how he was progressing. Somewhat strange that this story has fallen off the face of the earth.

If his disc was amenable to only minimally invasive discectomy back surgery (as opposed to a more extensive surgery such as laminectomy or lumbar fusion), he could theoretically be back on the field as soon as 4 weeks postoperatively. That is the only scenario that I can see that could give possible credence to the "rumor."

This says more about Yates than Leinart in my opinion. You wouldn't want to hand over the keys to Yates this early in his career. This team would be screwed if Yates had to take a significant amount of snaps. I've never been a fan of his dating back to North Carolina, but even if he's improved I don't think he's ready for the role quite yet.

The Texans inquired about free agent QB David Garrard, but the ex-Jaguar confirmed he is not ready to play following back surgery.
"You know every quarterback that's gone down? Pretty much every team has called," said Garrard, who underwent his surgery shortly after getting cut by the Jags. He's still at least two weeks from being able to pass a physical. We won't see Garrard back in the league until 2012. Nov 30 - 8:08 AM

It's a shame he's not available, I would think Garrard could actually do pretty well in our system. He is mobile enough to run for first downs when the D only rushes 4, or tie up another defender playing Spy to help other guys on offense. That could open up some holes for the run game.

Agreed, but it should be noted that in addition to confirming he was in contact with the Texans, Garrard made some comments that led me to believe that if he'd been healthy enough to play, he'd probably be a Raider right now.

It's a shame he's not available, I would think Garrard could actually do pretty well in our system. He is mobile enough to run for first downs when the D only rushes 4, or tie up another defender playing Spy to help other guys on offense. That could open up some holes for the run game.

I suggested the same in a thread I started and got lambasted.

That's because it was a dumb idea when you suggested. Now that Dutch has, it's a good idea. :fingergun:

I had to lay this down for Cland. Dude has always been good with the scoops here, at houstonprofootball.com and at the official site for the last decade. Gotta give him some love even though it didn't happen. Looks like the Texans tried to make it happen.

Thanks for getting all old school, brother!

The word is they were good on money and were just trying to get an in-house physical planned in roughly 1-2 weeks, prior to him having a setback that should keep him out for the season. One item of note, is that Garrard was all about rejoining a team in the same division...as you can imagine he's no longer a big Del Rio fan--but at least he got some good news at the end of the day.

For the critics, I would like to say I've downgraded my source from 'pretty solid' to 'kinda solid' as he was pretty darned close, but I did chalk it up as a miss.
