They won't let Foster go. Mario and Dreessen may command to high a price, and frankly, I think we could live without them. But not without Foster. I'll bet Rackers comes back. Probably Ward as well if he doesn't ask for to much.

Arian Foster - He's not going anywhere

Derrick Ward - Replacable. But for the right price I'd like to have him back

Bryant Johnson - Expendable

Joel Dreessen - Would love to bring him back, but we do have Graham

Neil Rackers - We better bring him back

Damione Lewis - I didn't know he was still on the roster. Bye

Mario Williams - Pretty much the face of the franchise. I'm pretty sure he'll be here at least one more year

I think Foster and Mario will be back. Dresssen im not sure about. Also looking at this list there are plenty of WR's we could bring in to play opposite Andre.

Mario or either Foster will get the franchise Tag.

Lots of good WRs though. If Smith could work some cap magic and convince Reggie Wayne to take a pay-cut...would be fun watching that's for sure. But even outside of Wayne there are really good players that would look good next to Andre.

Foester is an exclusive rights free agent. He's not going anywhere. The Texans will re-sign Mario. TEs don't get big deals in free agency. Dreessen is probably worth more to the Texans than others, since he knows the system. They'll re-sign Rackers unless he misses a big kick. Ward is gone now that Tate is a proven quality back.

Agree. Dressen is smallish & not the TE that would be a staple of any offense. We'll keep him & he'll be cheap. He plays well in the shadow of OD.... & that's where he'll stay.

The more I think about it, the less interested I am in the Texans' going after any big free agents this year.

We're beginning to hit the stage where our draft successes are going to need paying year after year, and there seems to be quality starting throughout the team.

Sure we could use an upgrade at positions like WR2, CB2, NT, maybe RG too, but we don't HAVE to overpay for them, they aren't desperate needs any longer.

What we need to do now is go back to that building through the draft mentality, I look for WR first round, someone who can slot right into the WR2 position (and allow K-Dub to move into the slot role where he'd be unbelievable) but witht the potential to be a number 1 later. It takes 3 years for a rookie WR to reach his potential in the league, by that point Dre will be getting on a bit.

NT, sure Cody could be upgraded but the guy isn't hurting us at all, it isn't like we need to go out and get someone better right now, again, draft a prospect early.

CB2, after what I've seen through 8 games, Kareem is improving, slowly, but its there, we also have Harris, and Carmichael, I give it a year and see what we've got, I don't adress this this offseason.

RG, similar story, if there's someone there in FA who the FO feel is an upgrade, then I have a look for the right price, but that said I don't disrupt the harmony of the O-line unless i'm 100% certain I've found a clear upgrade.

I see D-line/LB depth being the most likely target in FA, nothing too pricey though, there are a lot of contracts need sorting out over the next couple of years.

That's pretty much spot on. I'm not sure what the franchise tag rules are, but i assume either mario or foster will get it and the other will get a contract. Foster should get his first considering the discount he played for this year.

I reallly think Texans will not resign Joel Dreessen unless its on the cheap.

My reasoning is that Garrett Graham will be in his 3rd year of a 4 year contract he has 1 rec for 24yds in 2 yrs. It may be time to see what he has as a pro.

Indy has 3 WRs hitting UFA. Would be nice to snag one of them. I don't know what their money situation looks like, but keeping Peyton, paying Luck, and trying to build an entire team that they found out they didn't have this year may result in one of those WRs hitting the market.

Mario isnt a lock to be back IMO

He shouldn't be. I'm amazed at how many people would want to resign him knowing we had the best pass rush we've ever had with him "not playing" and he is not even close to being worth what he'll demand considering how many pass rushers we have that do a very good job. Resigning Mario should only be done in order to trade the guy. We need to get better at other positions where we are struggling at.

And for the folks that suffer from "paranoia of free agents" than I'd like to ask what in the hell would you want the Texans to enter the draft for than?? The key to any off season is to get better players to improve your team. That's the objective, so why anyone would say something like "I don't want to sign any free agents" I can't even fathom what makes them confident about a draft. At least with most free agents you have a strong idea of what you're getting and what kind of the player the guy is to know whether or not if he's worth the cash. The draft has busts all over the first round even every year. Ask Okoye, Babin, David Carr, Kareem Jackson, and Travis Johnson. That's 5 guys out of the last 10 seasons of 1st round draft picks on the Texans alone that didn't pan out. That's right around a 50% draft bust ratio. And some of you guys hide under the covers every time a free agent situation becomes relevant? Sorry, but I just don't get it. The key is to improve your team any way you can. Any player that can help your team and is affordable, then why on earth is it something to be afraid of??

Shoot, you'd think that Jonathan Joseph and Daniel Manning's impact that they've had on this team would have finally dispelled this myth that free agents are evil monsters, but apparently not unfortunately.

How did our pass rush look the last 5 games? Once the other teams figures out Reed he was way less effective as a pass rusher - and all the extra protection on the outside opened up the middle for A. Smith.

I am not saying Mario is deserving the big bucks he will probably get (mainly due to injury and inconsistency reasons) - but you don`t just let a guy like that walk. Resign him, and if you don`t feel like you need him anymore you will have no problems to trade him for a couple of picks. DEs are still very highly sought after and Mario is still considered a premier pass rusher (and rightfully so, he should get 10+ sacks each season).

I´d also like to keep Dreesen... I feel like people underestimate his growth. But we can`t pay big bucks to keep him after resigning Foster and Mario. He might be next years Leach. But we can always draft another TE

Our budget is gonna be tight. We need to pay Foster and most likely Mario, plus next off-season you have Schaub, Butler, Cody, not to mention more the year after. This is what separates the big dogs and little dogs. I am sure we will lose some players that fans won't like, but you can't keep everyone and in reality you will not be able to sign all of your top players you draft and sign free agents. Look at Green Bay, they draft well and sign their own guys, VERY rarely does Ted Thompson sign a free agent, and I don't think he has ever signed a big name guy. Just won't happen with the cap. This is why signing Mario is a HUGE deal. We want him back, but is giving him a huge chunk of our salary that smart?

To me one of the "under the radar" subjects/issues in the upcoming FA is
DeMeco Ryans and his contract ? Cushing is now clearly the top ILB and therefor the primary nickle/3-down ILB and Sharpton (assuming he returns to form after an IR season) can be a very effective 2nd ILB which makes DeMeco and his very pricey contract he got back in the 2009-2010 offseason expendible.

You think? I'd say you're probably right but if he wants to take a #3 deal just to stick around and finish up here there are worse fates.

On the WR front I'd like to see us pick up someone a little bit older but accomplished to play opposite AJ and draft another one early to start getting ready to replace AJ. People keep bringing up Wayne and that would be fine (seems so unlikely though) but there are a lot of other options too.

My version of this WR group next year has Andre Johnson, Pierre Garcon (or Wayne, be nice to take weapon away from Indy), a 1st round rookie WR, and Kevin Walters. In terms of age that's a couple of older guys (AJ and Walter), one veteran without too many years on him (Garcon), and one rookie. Nice balance. I wouldn't trade up for the rookie WR. I expect there will be quite a few options where we pick with this bunch coming out.

I didn't say don't sign any free agents, I said I'm not too bothered about signing big money free agents. Huge difference there mate.

The reality is, how many successful teams make lots of blockbuster moves in free agency year after year? We made some really good moves this last off-season, Joseph has been great, Manning a big upgrade. But if the FO don't make any big splashes in FA this season, I won't be upset, I'll understand that the team isn't far off being great across the board, and that those guys already playing are going to need paying sooner or later and that we'd better be prepared.

Our big signings got us 'over the hump', time to get back to the strategy that got us to that hump in the first place if you ask me, and that is to build strength in depth.

DeMeco is the leader of the defense and a team captain, i don't think so. And Sharpton is not DeMeco. DeMeco will get a chance to get a full offseason of recovery to hopefully return back to his pre-injury form.

Cushing undoubtedly is our best LBer and no one will debate that, and he's definitely a leader by example, but i won't question DeMeco's importance.

Contracts can be back loaded to fall under new caps and up front bonus $ is prorated and what players want to see. We will be able to sign Mario and Schaub the issue is do we want to? Mario reminds me and I think Texecutioner of Rockets former center Yao Ming in that while good neither seem to be the best they could be. Both lost games due to injury (Yao of course way out of proportion). I am just saying we need to make good decisions on two players that will have key roles in the future and will be paid even if results not all that we expect.

To address an older post from someone else, Foster is resticted and does not require a tag as he can only negotiate with Texans.

JJWatt & Antonio Smith have really stepped up their game over the last three weeks.

I've never seen a 3-4 DE take over a game the way Watt has... & he's a rookie. If Bruce Smith played like that, it was just too long ago for me to remember.

I was worried about Mario having to play the 5-tech in this 3-4 & didn't think he would be a game changer at the position. Watt has exceeded my expectations for Mario at that position.

I still think this defense would be that much better with Mario.

Put it this way, if we had the opportunity to add James Harrison to this defense, would you do it?

You may not see Mario as "James Harrison" & that's where I think the breakdown is.

After you compensate for the difference between the Saints offense & ours, Drew Brees & Schaub....... Meachum isn't going to get you anything we're not getting from Jones or Walter.

He was a first round pick that isn't a starter on the team he is currently on. I don't understand the love for Meachum.

pretty much this

he can stretch the field, but he isn't the best route runner and doesn't have the best hands. Mentally, he appears to check out of some games - there are stretches where he disappears. One of his best plays was the Meach Around - one of the headiest plays I've seen:

But he's not going to transform a receiving corps and I'm not sure that he would be that big of an uprade over what yall have already.

With the Saints needing to sign Brees and Nicks. And Colston. I think Meachem will hit the market, along with CB Tracy Porter. Signing Brees, Nicks, and Colston is a tall order to begin with.

Gonna be a nervewracking offseason for the Saints. But I think it will be another team's message board where fans misspell Meeacheum's next season. He will get a payday more than the Saints would be offering (I'm guessing). Same thing for Porter - he's a good CB and with Greer, Robinson, and Patrick, I think a team will pony up more $$$$ than the Saints can afford for their 3rd best CB.

I'd like to get Bowe or Laurent Robinson heck I'd take Desean Jackson in the right situation . I would take Stevie Johnson also .

Meachum would be a good No. 2 to pick up, along with a first round WR.

As much as I'd love to see these two in Steel Blue, you're probably right, I'm not sure we can afford Bowe much less both of them. But Rick Smith found a way to get Joseph and Manning when no one thought we had the cap room so who knows.

I think we could squeeze a couple of good years out of Wayne if he comes at a reasonable price. He can stretch the field better than KW and has way better hands than J.Jones (like, who doesn't).
