ive given myself pause to chew on the draft and the offseason moves so far rather than leaping into the mass hysteria plaguing these boards. i guess boredom finally got the best of me today. i cant say i like this years draft ,but then i didnt care much for last years draft at the time...that netted us 3 starters and 1 potential probowler. so compared to charley what do i know? a whole lotta of nothing right there next to most of you self claimed draft experts. i knew a lot of the names but i didnt do informed background checks, interviews, or breakdown hundreds of hours of video...did you? didnt think so. nor have i had an oppurtunity to see the players already on the texans roster on a day in and day out basis. how the hell should i know wether a player whos been on the bench all year is wasting a roster spot or about to bloom into a superstar? i'll defer to the coaches opinion well before anyone elses in most instances. i can at least credit some of the chicken littles for giveing me a laugh...i appreciate that but i dont follow your intense desire to hear certain names on draft day. give charley the bennifit of the doubt. he's one of the best in the buisness for good reason.

i find it almost pointless to banter back and forth on how good "player a" will be vs "player b" when neither player has ever set foot on a nfl football field. instead i want to take a look at things as a whole from the blueprint perspective.

what have we accomplished this offseason?

we've injected youth at the linebacker postion (greenwood)

we've injected youth at the cornerback postion (p-buc)

we've injected youth at the defensive line postion (tj)

at what expense?

sharper,foreman, and a 3rd round pick (i consider p-buc a 2nd round pick).

lets be honest here, i know sharper was the staple of our defense but he was no 6mil a year kinda linebacker ,and he was not going to be here long term. they tried to restructure to no avail. lose him this year or lose him next year? which did u perfer? at least this way they took a shoot at getting something in return. and something else a lot of you may not have considered--------PEEK. those same people who complained loudest durring the season about peeks playing time complained most about sharper being cut. has it occured to you that one player had an effect on the other? if the coaches arent happy with peek they arent happy with moving wong inside...some of you guys want the best of both worlds and it wasnt going to happen. the decision eventually came to peek vs sharper. whos more cap freindly and whos at the begining of their carrer.

ultimately the texans cut foreman (marginal and overpaid) as well as shaper (overpaid) in return for cap freindly (peek) speed (greenwood/peek). not only are these 2 cap freindly and a serious speed upgrade they're young.

but lets not stop there...how bout this cornerback situation? glenn and p-buc. glenn will not be here much longer. despite the classy rep hes brought hes not getting any younger...or cheaper. p-buc is faster. p-buc is younger. p-buc is cheaper. and glenn is gone this year or next. would you like your medicine now or later? best case scenerio glenn stays with the team and works as a quality nickleback after this season. his role has already been dimished...the question is will he accept it and will you?

walker/tj. same song. same dance. and i have no complaints. a lot of these veterans have been given no competition and huge checks. its part of the growing process...these moves mean we're getting younger and faster while still being cap freindly (and some would say competiton breeds improved performance). it shouldnt be much of a surprise...this is the natural maturing of the franchise. this will not be the last of it...walker, mckinney, and weigert are on my short list.

but lets look at these moves on the field and how they effect a gameplan etc...

in the secondary : d-rob, glenn earl, and marcus coleman can all be expected to improve due to natural maturity or more time at a new postion. as such they require less help and free up blitzers. even if glenn is gone the addition of sanders shouldnt go unnoticed. i think we improved our depth there.

in the linebacking core greenwood is ofcourse a coverage upgrade as is wong over foreman. babin will naturally improve and the unit is now faster. it seems to me everyone next to peek should be solid in coverage....which frees him up to "fetch the quarterback". minimize his responsibilities and his performance will improve. especially when all you ask him to do is what he does best.

the dline is no diffrent. youth and speed. and no longer will one injury in the dline have the impact it did in years past.

all in all we're faster and younger. this will be the first season we see what a zone blitz is supposed to be in steele blue.

by the same token many of these moves allow us a bit more money in next years free agency period. i expect us to be a fringe team that just misses the playoffs this year ,and forsee a major fa aqusition or 2 propelling us there in 2006.

on another note i'd just like to point out that everyone here upset about passing on dj should take note of that 3rd round pick we aquired to move down. next years draft is much deeper and there will no doubt be a couple of players worth "frothing at the mouth" about. that 3 insures a chance to move up and get them.

it seems to me every gm's job should be to keep a team as young and cap freindly as possible while still adding talent. for the most part i think charley's done a great job of that this offseason. i dont always agree with the moves or like them...but in the end theres always been a practicality to his decisions. thanks charley.

like you said, you really don't know. I do know that KC, which i respect as a team, took a chance on DJ. They might know something about football.

great perspective powda, i share a very similair view point. and congrats on the restraint to stay away from the board lately, i haven't gotten into it to bad with anyone but i bet i could have saved some brain cells by minimizing the exposure to alot of the UT homer and 'fire cASS and capers/texans find ways to suck' threads

Your other mistake is saying peeks problem was in pass coverage. His coverage skills were fine, it was his run stopping that people talked about. Also, the people that wanted peek to play more were not necessarily the ones complaining about sharper. I for one and by far the biggest peek fan on here and never complained about sharper leaving. Also, with this new speed on defense and additions it better not just be peek going after the QB, I expect 6 man blitzes to be a regular thing that occurs. Controlled chaos is going to be the name of this defense. This team now has the ability to blitz from every position. As long as there can be coverage for 3-4 seconds a play, there will be many sacks.

ive read your numerous post in the past defending peek and suspect your either him, family, or an agent. :)

perhaps over the offseason peek has gotten better in coverage but, he was not respectable at it last year. undoubtedly his strong suit is rushing the passer...and ofcourse peek wont be the only blitzer but of all the linebackers he should get the most oppurtunities. and rightly so.

Last year Vic Fangio, the defensive coordinator and someone who has a little bit more knowledge on the matter than any of us, said that Peek was the linebacker who was best in coverage.

Thank you very much for the support, i knew someone said it but wasnt sure. I didnt want to just make up a quote. And to my other friend, i am not Peek, not his agent, and not in his family. Is it my fault that I can judge some talent?

you may respect them as a team, but they have been a defensive laughing stock for awile now. As far as knowing about football, I agree, they do... but... so do all of the other teams that passed on DJ including the HOUSTON TEXANS.
Additionally, every team makes bad picks in the draft every once in awhile, so why don't we all just support our team and see how these picks pan out? There's a better than even chance that both TJ and DJ will become good NFL players, but TJ fits our particualr defense better, and fills an area of more need IMO.

i find that interesting...link?

i actually want to be wrong on this one because it means peek is a better talent then i give him credit for.

I respect your posts generally, but honestly, Peek was in coverage very few times last year. Of those, I remember him blocking and almost intercepting a Peyton Manning pass and intercepting a Manning pass. IMO for a DE convert he is doing very well in coverage. Biggest fault--play recognition and containment. If he gets to either rush the passer or cover someone he seems like he does very well IMO. It is the screen play/toss he needs to work on. Boy has to un-pin his ears sometimes.

my post was intended to survey the direction of the team rather than peek...but i do think he'll have the oppurtunity to play a huge role this season. despite anyones opinion right or wrong on his coverage skills (which wasnt originally the topic at hand)...his key role in this defense will be to get the quarterback. perhaps i'm in the minority here but i would much rather see a safety or greenwood cover that te or runningback comming out on a route then peek. to me that just makes a helluva lot more sense.

and just because he said it dosent mean i believe it
...cincykid is peek. did ya find your playbook yet?

I know that wasn't the main point of your post--just dissecting a piece out. No one can argue that they would rather see a safety covering a RB or TE than a LB, but the fact is Capers is going to call upon the LB's to do that and Peek is an extremely athletic/motivated LB. Watch him on special teams--there are plenty of guys faster out there like Starling, but nonetheless, Peek is often the 1st guy downfield. He wants it--that is something our D needs.

There it is! I'm right there with you. We don't know the game like they do in the front office and coaching staff, and we never will. I didn't like the Babin deal last year, and that obviously is working out nicely so far. So I'm very willing to be wrong on things like this!

I actually did like this year's draft, except that I would've preferred an O-line pick where Morency was taken. But Houston had a need at RB too, and he may be a fantastic pick-up, so I have no major gripes with the draft. And I agree that more Peek in the defensive scheme will be a great thing.

I do disagree that Greenwood is "of course" an upgrade in coverage. He's proved no such thing in Miami. BUT...he has speed and could indeed be that guy.

Compared to Jay Foreman (picked up by no team so far by the way) Matt Stevens is an upgrade in coverage. It is safe to say Greenwood is better.

Why do I crack up every time somebody mentions Matt Stevens? That will never get old. :heh:

I still don't think it's a no-brainer. Time will tell.

And, I should apoligize to Matt. But for him ripping Ricky's shoe off as he olayed a tackle attempt, the Texans probably wouldn't have won their 2003 opening game. Good strategy Matt, whatever tatoo parlour you are in.

Of course a safety would be better, but thats not always going to happen, especially when they drop into a zone coverage. And probably in your mind, you think peek couldnt even type on a computer because you think he is so dumb, so how could i be him

Good post powda, you really had to get all of that of your chest, huh?

#1 I, for one, really like our draft this year. I think it could be the best so far from top to bottom. I'm not saying TJ will be better than Dunta or Andre, just that I think this is C&C's best crop so far. I feel like we have got some guys that will be with us for a while.

#2 I am also VERY excited to see our new defense, because that is what it is. We're still running a 3-4, but the scheme will be executed closer to how Capers wanted it to be for a while. I also feel like by the end of the year we will be one of the most feared D's in the league.
