View Full Version : Some examples on how to contain RB Chris Johnson

I didn't have enough time to work on this, so I will just put it out quickly.

1. Gap control

On this play here, the D plays with seven men in the box (against 7 blockers).
Playing gap control, the D doesn't have enough men to control all 8 gaps
(with 7 blockers, there are 8 gaps when the FB comes up on his lead block.)
But the defenders manages to be quick to their gaps and prevent the runner (Chris Johnson) from bursting through the line to wreak havoc.

The Titans calls an end run to the weak side (left) with the FB leads to the outside of the LT #71.

The D (Cleveland Browns) is in a 4-man front, with a LB on the LOS (strong side); for practical purpose, it looks just the same as a 34 with a WILL putiing a hand in the dirt. We can imagine Brook Reed here lining up on the LOS, outside of the LT (this will be the play side.)
Barwin is on the TE on the other side.
The Mo can be Demeco (this LB who will make the play wears #90).

As the LT takes on the 43 WDE (or the 34 WILL Reed) and the LG takes on the WDE (it's probably Antonio for the Texans), the weak side B gap is open for the Mo Demeco to shoot through.
He will need to get there ASAP to chase Chris Johnson wide and tries to make a play before CJ gets to the edge and turns upfield.

2. Set the edge and stay discipline, don't let the misdirection fools you.

On this play here, the Titans pull the LG and leads the FB to the right while CJ runs to the other side (his left).

The WDE attacks inside the LT, leaving the C gap (outside the LT) for the 43 WILL to man.
This guy keys on the LG and gets fooled by the pulling action; he takes a false step to the inside, thinking he will be chasing the play behind the LOS to the strong side.

That's all it take for CJ to beat him around the edge and gains 27 yards before the safety arrives.

3. LG and C double team on the NT - LB must shoot the gap quickly.

On this play, the Titans tries another end run from a 2TE set.

They double the NT with the LG and the C while pulling the LT to the outside of the TE.
The WR 17 crashes on the safety who comes down when he reads run.

In this case, the 43 WILL #51 needs to shoot the gap quickly before the LG releases off the double team to block him.
#51 fires off so quickly that the LG never got the chance.
Not only that, he causes the LT to turn back instead of continuing outside to block the CB.

CJ sees that the CB is now unblocked and he won't be able to get to the outside.
He tries to turn upfield, but the WILL #51 spuns off the LT and manages to put a hit on him and get him off balance.

The LG, failing to release onto the WILL, tries to get to MLB #52 instead.
He doesn't have enough time to get there as the MLB scrape around him to finish off the play.
(It wasn't neccessary as the WILL #51 grab already causes CJ to tumble face down onto the ground.)

4. RG and RT double team on the DT; LB shoot the gap again.

Somehow I manages to lose the screen shots of this play.

Basically, as the LB shoot the gap quickly, the O-lineman couldn't get off the double team quick enough to get to him.

Our ILBs need to do the same thing in order for the Texans to contain the run.

Shoot the gap, set the edge, stay disciplined.

5. CJ stuffed on another misdirection as the Browns stay disciplined.

6. The Sky Force.

Similar to the third play, when the WR goes inside to block the safety, the CB needs to be quick to force the runner back to the inside.

The CB needs to get past the pulling O-lineman quickly and set the edge.

The Browns were able to do that and stopped CJ for a short one-yd gain.

10-23-2011, 10:07 AM
7. A two-yard loss by CJ as the back side DE and LB didn't overpursue.

They maintain their gap responsibilty and contain the back side well.
The CB also needs to get off his man (WR) quickly to come and support the run.

Never worry, I understand that all of us, we each have our own opinion, and we all can be pretty stubborn, myself included.

I wish I have more time to talk about the Titans TEs and their WRs, but it looks like photobucket is acting up again.

If I don't have time to post anything, I just hope that our LBs don't go to sleep.

Great work. Thx.

Glad y'all enjoy it.

One quick note on a wheel route by the slot receiver Nate Washington.

The nickel back Joe Haden (high first round pick from last year) wasn't able to get up quickly enough on the pick by the outside receiver.

With Wade, we probably don't have to worry as much as our CB normally plays back away from the LOS.

Even if we decide to play both CBs near the LOS, in pattern matching, I expect (or at least hope that) the RCB will get off his man and take on the slot receiver's wheel route while the nickel take over the inside route by the outside receiver.

In this instance, the nickel back Joe Haden plays man and needs to jump that route very quickly otherwise, he will be screened out easily by the outside receiver - something that happened quite often with our defense scheme last year.

10-23-2011, 11:24 AM
The SAM took a peek into the backfield and got burned.

I hope our LBs stay aware of their TEs.

10-23-2011, 11:31 AM
Notice that the SS came downhill to play the run (and also check on the other TE.)

The FS is occupied temporarily by the deep route ran by the weak side X receiver.
No, they don't let the weak side CB covering the wide receiver by himself on an inside route even if his name is Joe Haden and he was drafted high in the first round.

This resulted in an 80-yd catch and run TD by the Titans TE Jarett Cook.

Last play before I shut down and go watch the game.

Safety was supposed to help watch both the TE and the RB.
The LB had made sure the TE Craig Stevens can't run the slant, but the safety failed to jump to cover the outside.

I hope our guys don't make the same mistakes.

We really need to beat the Titans.

Go Texans!

10-23-2011, 11:52 AM
Good work dude.

With any luck we'll be able to contain this punk. This isn't the Texans run D of years past, so we'll see what happens. Just stop the big play. I don't want that momentum BS swinging their way. If he gets 100 yards but takes 35 carries to do it, then whatever.

10-23-2011, 01:07 PM
Wrong thread, sorry.

Great info in here though.

10-23-2011, 01:34 PM
texans doing an amazing job so far, kudos to Connor Barwin. But they have to keep it up.

Wade Phillips did his thang, didn't let CJNofknway get started.... prompted an impromtu exit of Hasselbeck.....

Looks easy enough to stop CJ this year, just have 11 guys on defense and you have a shot.

...maybe the guy has lost his speed. He used to always dance around and get 1-2 yard gains then bust off a big run to get his average up.

10-23-2011, 03:21 PM
I was going to say the best way to slow down Chris Johnson is to give him $30 million guaranteed.

10-23-2011, 03:27 PM
Suck a fat one, Chris Johnson.

Utter trash. As if it wasnt PAINFULLY obvious he was in it for the money.

10-23-2011, 10:39 PM
I've only rewatched the game a couple of times and didn't take any note.
I haven't zeroed in the run defense either, but overall, it looks like the guys did everything I hope for against CJ.

10-23-2011, 11:11 PM
chris johnson looked like he just didnt care about the game at all. even on the fake runs you can tell his lack of effort by not blocking the rushers or horrible jobs of selling the run....lol.

How to contain Chris Johnson: give him a big contract :)

Also, whatever we did today seems to work.

10-23-2011, 11:50 PM
the titans have 28 on offense, we have twice the player on defense in 56. that's how you stop chris johnson. i have never seen an offensive player hit a brick wall like johnson has against cushing the last two games.

I finished looking into those ten runs by CJ.
The guys did everything I hope they would do, and a little more.
All of them played well, and that included the DBs on the force and the backups like Sharpton and Mitchell.

it wasn't just Cushing; Watts also played big and Reed is becoming a force to be reckon with.

There wasn't any room for CJ to run.
Foster and Tate wouldn't want to go up against our run D on this day!

10-24-2011, 01:47 AM
With the exception of a few spurts in games here and there, our run game has been solid. The biggest key is being stout in early downs forcing teams into 3rd and long situations. If we continue to do this like we've done for most of the games then I think we'll be successful. We have MJD coming into town off of a short week and most likely a healthy Hillis. We need to keep these guys in check.

10-24-2011, 09:37 AM
cut him a big check and he just takes the next season off..

10-24-2011, 09:46 AM
CJ is Haynesworthing it up...there's no secret to containing him other than paying him when he whines about it.
