Mario to I.R. as expected, Casey is day-to-day with a pec strain, did not rule out Andre yet against Baltimore, defended Jacoby Jones' play way too much for my comfort.

So who do the Texans work out tomorrow? I would expect an OLB that can rush, or maybe a smaller defensive end that can.

Kubiak will not embarrass his players. He called out Jacoby as much as he ever will any of his players. He said he needs to step up. He played 70 plays and won some of the battles, etc... That is about as critical he will ever be in front of the media. Reality is that Jacoby got an earful yesterday and the coaches will be all over him this week.

I have to give Barry Warner credit, he's not afraid to criticize the team unlike the rest of the ass kissing media.

Dale, I sure hope your right. Jacoby needs to have a come to Jesus meeting this week or get a pink slip at the end of the season.

Kubiak is never going to blast a dude through the media. Nor should he. Handle your business behind closed doors and move on to Baltimore.

Mario got to have a pec repair. That will probably take place in the next week. He's done for the season. James Casey is day to day as we move forward. He has a pec strain. McCain should be fine. Our QB got a sore shoulder and thigh bruise. He is day to day as we start the week off.

Briesel ok?

He got an ankle and knee. Got rolled up in a pile. Everything seems more positive today so we'll see where we're at come Wednesday.

Noticing anything with Matt that would cause him to short arm throws or anything like that?

No. Like I said yesterday, anytime you get beat, everybody could do something better. Matt made a heck of a lot of plays yesterday. A lot of good plays. Some he would like to have back. They were aggressive in what they were doing defensively. You'll have ugly plays when being played that way. Key is, do you make big plays to burn the blitzes. We did have a lot of big plays. 9 plays over 20 yards but not enough big ones to win the game. But no, I dont see that. Not just with Matt, I see room for improvement with everybody. I dont see some flaw or something if thats what you're asking.

Andre out this week?

I dont know. As of right now, soreness went away and rehab has picked up so we'll see where he's at each day.

Thoughts on losing Mario and Reed coming in.

I feel bad for Mario. Heck of a player. What we're doing, it will blossom his career from now on. He was improving every day, every practice, every game. Never seen Mario so upbeat on what was going on and to lose him on a freak play. I'm disappointed for Mario. It's tough on the team. Brooks did come in. We played good D all day yesterday. Brooks apart of that. Good opportunity for him to step up and be a starter and thats why we drafted him.

Vickers took the blame after the game yesterday. He didnt make it happen.

Like I always say, we win and lose as a team. He had a chance to make a big play, didnt happen. He'll get a great chance to come back this week if James is unable to go. He'll get his opportunities to help this football team. He played hard. But like I said, we can all do things a little better.

How do you feel about going with him?

He has started in this league. That's why we brought him in. He'll get a lot of work now. He is different from James but I feel confident in him.

Talk about Bryan Brayman

He moves up the depth chart. He can rush the passer. He'll get some D reps which he hasnt been getting. Been playing ST. Another young player getting thrown in the fire so to speak. Expect him to grow up and do some good things real quick.

Moving Nading up from the PS?

We've thought of it but we got a lot of things to look at right now. Got some challenges from a management standpoint as we sit here and have to juggle some things going forward with these injuries. Another challenge as we go into the week. Anyone on the PS is a possibility.

In the 4th Q, Schaub was sacked, facemask on Brisiel and 12 men on the field, what was the explanation to you?

Im wating on it too. I'll let you know.

How much do you weigh what a player tells you on the field as opposed to what they're telling you as far as a challenge goes?

I try to listen to em. I'm listening to them but they gave us plenty of time to look at it. We felt upstairs we never saw the ball hit the ground but with the 2 views on the scoreboard, hard to say will they overturn it or not.

How much more does Jacoby have to step up?

He gotta step up big. He played a lot of plays yesterday. Played 70+ plays. Him and Kevin. We got pressured a lot so a lotta things we were doing was to protect and let him and Kevin go 1 on 1 with their secondary. He's part of the group and group wasnt good enough as a whole but he'll have to step up and make some big plays for us to continue forward. With the ball movement yesterday, there should have been more points on the board, there wasnt.

How did Raiders win the point of attack at the LOS?

Give them credit. They're very good. Their 2 guys on the inside are very good players. They played well. We didnt play as well as we been playing up front. A little of everything. Seemed as a group, we pitched in on making our mistakes or didnt take advantage of the opportunity. Its everyone involved, not just the O-line. It's everyone involved.

Ravens coming off a bye. You're coming off tough loss. Not to mention, they're one of the best in the NFL.

They're exceptional. They're 2nd or 3rd in the league(D) and getting a ton of turnovers. We understand who we're facing. Played 2 tough games back to back here with PIT/OAK. Gotta get my guys fresh and ready to go.

After all these years in the league, how come other than the slant pattern, Jacoby cant run a pattern without rounding it off and running a crisp route and how does he fall asleep in the back of the endzone and not dart and go right back to the corner of the endzone where Matt could have an easy pass to him?

He did run some good routes Barry. We're all involved in getting better. I expect him to get better. Its not just him. Last play- you gotta move and make a play and Matt tried to do that. We had what we wanted, got flushed left, so once flushed, trying to live and make a play. Give them credit, they made the play, they didnt.

It was very easy.

I dont think it was Barry. I think this game is hard. You go out and play hard. Sometimes you make the play, sometimes you dont. Not an excuse. The Raiders made a play, we didnt. It isnt Jacoby's fault.

Why was Allen taking a deep cushion there in 2nd Q?

Right before the half?

Yeah and where he also missed the tackle.

He did give up out few out routes right before the half which was smart to do. We were trying to get the half over and keep them from scoring. You will have softness from that standpoint. We did miss a tackle.

You talked about running under 3 ypc and Schaub less than 50%. What was the problem there? And possibility of Schaub running in on last play? He said no shot because of the safety Branch.

You're right. We didnt run the ball well. Why? Combo of things. Throwing, we're under 50%. We got a lot of pressure yesterday and as I said, when you face what we faced yesterday, it's ok sometimes to throw 50%-55% as long as you're making big plays against the blitz and pressure. We had some big plays throwing the ball. Some big plays but not enough. I look back, we had 14-6 lead, ran what we call a slammer screen to Kevin, caught the blitz, had a chance to go to the house,.guy makes a shoestring tackle. Thats the type of game we were in. We needed to make a couple of those plays and we didnt. Last play, we're working the right side of the field, got a play going on over there, which is exactly what we wanted, the rush flushed him left, and when he went left, the first thing I think Matt thought of is I am going to try and score here. He started downhill and here comes a safety. He gotta make a decision. Do I think he could score? Probably not. He gotta make that decision though. Hes the QB. When he knew he couldnt, he had to do something with the ball-the game is over.

Talk about what Walter and Dreessen did.

Kevin played well. 70+ football plays. PLayed very well. Joel played well. OD/Arian made big plays. We had a lot of big offensive plays and ball movement but needed more points-7/10 more points.. When you get beat, you do good stuff but as a group, not good enough.

Does Barwin move to Mario's spot and his role going forward?

Barwin playing a big role all the time. He's playing well. Thats an option we have. We'll make that decision moving forward. Kinda like offensively, gotta replace Andre with a group, we gotta replace Mario with a group of good linebackers, not just one guy.

Is Jacoby suppose to catch a punt going backwards at the 5 yard line?

If its that guy punting, its ok. This guy hit some 60 yard punts and stuff so.. If he hits a bomb like that, coverage is not there, I dont mind him trying to make a play. I want him to stay aggressive. If they're punting from the 50, which that team doesnt do because that kicker is pretty darn good, then its a different story. All depends on the situation.

What do you mean, "If it's that guy punting, it's ok?". Everything - including your first clause - makes no friggin sense.

So, how about if Andre Johnson is bangin' your wife, Kubes? So, if it's, "...that guy screwing, it's ok.". Because you want him to "stay aggresive?"

Oh well, I just don't see the logic. But, Andre, keep cutting her meat, because, it "All depends on the situation."

I was thinking he said that because of the way his punts tend to bounce back toward the play. I still agree with you, pretty lame response given it goes against rule of thumb 1) don't fair catch inside the 10, and 2) DON'T OVER-THE-SHOULDER FAIR CATCH INSIDE THE TEN!! :D :rake:

I was thinking, 'who the heck told him to do that'? Ball security is pretty much football 101 at this important juncture of the game. Did he do that on his own, or was that the plan? If that was the plan to fake it and put that ball out there in the most important part of the game instead of just tucking it away securely, it was an awful, foolish idea. Another 'smartest guy in the room' cutesypie decision that really drives me to dislike the mentality of the Kubiak regime. They don't think like winners if that is their idea of how to 'close out games'.

I will say it was the best punter in the NFL, maybe of all time. Guess there was a fear of it sticking to the ground and being downed at the 1. I kind of get it.

Jones pretty much made an awful call and instead of the Coach just saying that was a dumbass move, he just aw-shucks it and tries to make his decision look like it's a decent one in the face of the facts and logic. Yes, that could have been an even easier TD for the Raiders than his catch in the first place. You must let this one bounce no matter what. This was a poor decision that we got lucky with.

What he is saying is that Shane Lechler (from Sealy), "that guy", is the best punter in the NFL; however, he at times hits some boomers and he out-kicks his coverage. That was Kube's point. If JJ thinks the punt from Lech sets up bad return coverage by the Raiders, he wanted JJ to be aggressive and try and break one. Against a guy who kicks 40 yard punts, you wouldn't do that.

I still agree with Kubiak on this.. If he's got something to say to the player, he needs to say it to the player. He doesn't need to use the media.

If this is about what we here, then it's that reporter's job to say, "really, you want him to do that??"

I do not expect the HC to critically break down a player in a press conference.

However, that being said, I also don't expect a HC to blow smoke up our collective butts with takes that make him look freakin' stupid.

"He did run some good routes Barry."

"If its that guy punting, its ok."

This stuff just makes you question his credibility. :cutthroat:

Update on Matt?

Matt is just beat up John. Got a chest bruise. Just really banged up. He's fine. Did work today. Hes beat up. He is day to day. Probably give him rest Wednesday like I did last week. All indications he'll be ok. Barber done for season - lisfranc. Manning got lower leg contusion and is day to day. Duane Brown got knee bruise and is day to day. He did work with the team today.

How concerned are you about Matt getting beat up this early?

Played some very physical football games. Yesterday we played a physical team. Our goal was to protect him. Did good job in the first half as long as we stayed on schedule. Took shots in the 2nd half. We need him on the field. Not a break in sight right now. It's a month away so we gotta be smart with him but he is banged up like a lot of guys after 6 weeks.

Talk about importance of this game and what it could mean?

Playing for the lead in the division, gotta be excited about that. Disappointed about the past 2 weeks. Been in 2 tough games and havent gotten it done. Come in here today, make our corrections, gotta juggle some guys around but going to Tennessee to play a huge football game.

Concerns about running game and where you're going from here?

We're not a bad running football team. 7th in the league but our standard is high. We didnt meet the standard the last 2 weeks. It's the group that is my concern. Everybody. We're not doing the little things that put us at the top of the league. Some of the extra things we do work wise. I'm calling on each one of them to look at themselves. We knew it would be tough yesterday but we tried to stay committed and stay on schedule and for the most part we did that. We gotta run the ball better for our football team to be successful. Our guys know that. It gotta get better with everyone.

Arian pointed finger at himself. Thoughts?

Hopefully you got players that feel that way. Players are smart. They know what it takes to win and be successful. Sometimes you gotta be honest with yourself. It wasnt all him. He did a lot of good things but we need him at the top of his game but he also needs a lot of help too. You want guys battlin' like that. I know we got the right guys.

Andre playing this Sunday?

Made a lot of improvement last week. He felt good. We'll increase his work. I have a hard time saying right now. We'll have to wait and see.

What did they do to slow Owen?

Showed him a lot of respect and doubled him in a lot of situations take away the things he does well. Owen played good in the football game. I gotta do everything I can to get him more involved than he was yesterday.

You mentioned Matt and his chest - is his hip ok?

No his hip is very sore. Its hip and his chest. He is very beat up but practiced and did what he would normally do on a Monday.

Ever reach a point where you had to consider Leinart?

No I didnt feel that way. If Matt was that way he would tell me.

What did you think about Derrick Mason?

For a guy who practiced only 2 days, he made a few plays for us. Had a few mistakes we gotta get corrected. Derrick can help us. Tough situation to be put in in the middle of the year. He is very smart and he'll feel better this week, we'll feel better about what he can do.

Why Kareem and why not Jason?

Kareem had not been healthy. We look at both as starters. He had a great week of practice. Kareem is physical, the Ravens were physical. We started Kareem and he played well. We gave up a big play and that wasnt even his play. We didnt play the coverage we were suppose to. Kareem played well. We were playing good D. I would like Jason to play more but Kareem played well for us too.

How much more to difficult is it without Casey and chance he is back this week?

James gives people a lot things to worry about. I miss him from that standpoint. There is a chance this week. He did workout before the game. Right now still day to day.

Discuss the 4th and 1 decision early and was Kevin Walter open there?

What do you mean if he was open?

Seemed like they didnt have coverage on the near side. Was there a misplay by Matt on that or no?

No, we called a run. We were unsuccessful. No excuse. We need to line up and get a yard. My guys gotta know I got confidence in them. I thought we needed that opportunity. I can sit here and say I would do it again. We need to be able to handle that as a football team.

How did Brooks Reed grade out?

Excited about how he played. Wasnt too big for him. He was active in the game. Played solid, can he do better? Yes. He and Connor played every snap. His future is bright and we need it to be.

Dustup after the Lions-49ers game-- thoughts on that?

I had a lot more on my plate. I got no comment.

Thoughts on Jamison?

One of the things I told the team today, it's a crying shame we arent sitting in here winning that game because Timmy is probably POG. I see a young Antonio. He got a ways to go but it is excited to see him. You'll see more of him.

How do you justify getting him more time?

You'd like those D-linemen coming out playing somewhere in the 40s. You dont want those D-linemen playing 60-65 plays. We would like it to be even like that.

Do you feel like if you are able to make crunchtime plays a couple of game, you'll be able to get over the hump and how much harder to get over the hump when you continually dont do it?

Thats part of this league. Every game is close. You dont see many blowouts in the NFL. In crunchtime the past 2 weeks, we were in position to win games and didnt get it done. Its disappointing but thats the position you want to be in. Guys have to step up. It was all three phases yesterday.

When you watch the film, is it physical or mental mistakes?

A little bit of both I would say. Gotta be able to transfer it from practice to the game.

Ultimately though, does it come down to the players as that sign says the in the back to be accountable and make the plays?

It comes down to all of us Barry. We're a team. We're all involved-- success or failure. We gotta stick together and figure out a way to do it.

How much do you think Andre's absence is affecting Matt?

We're getting played different. No doubt about that. But not affecting where Matt goes with the ball. Some of these situations we've been in, I hope the guys arent looking for him because he's not out there. We're in the situation we're in until he gets back and gotta work through it. Two weeks ago, we moved the ball well and didnt score enough points. Yesterday we go toe to toe with a dang good football team and we needed a new hero. Somebody needed to step up and make that play. Until Andre gets back, someone got to assume that responsibility.

Trindon still a possibility or someone else?

He is but problem is when you have injuries, there is a trickle down effect to ST. You have body issues. I would like Trindon to come up and return some kicks and hopefully we can find a roster spot but we got some other issues to deal with.

When you go into a game of this magnitude, do you play it the same of every other game? Do the players understand the importance of winning this game?

I know they understand. You prepare for every game the same. Everything is the same. You prepare for 4 Q's of football. As for importance? They're all important. We knew we had tough games early in the season and this is the next one up.

Glad to hear Kubiak elaborate about Kareem and the coachs reasoning on playing him instead of Allen. And interesting to hear him say that that long pass to Bolden wasn't on KJ, but instead a breakdown by one of the safetys.

The long play to Bolden was on Joseph, Kareem was nowhere near that one. He was talking about the big play to Smith. Even if it was Manning's play, it showed that Kareem has no closing speed, no make up speed. The phrase, if he's even, he's leavin applies to anyone covered by KJ. If he can't keep his player in front of him, the pass rush has got to get there, or he's in trouble.

I never thought that the Bolden play was on Kareem...

I didn't even see Kareem on the long Boldin Catches...

yep, the pass rush can't give a QB that much time. There is a tandem at work, and when a QB is given time, it's just a matter of finding the open man because he will be there. I think this is really where Mario is missed, the pressure of the blindside.

OK sounds like I had the 2 plays confused. Thanks for straightening me out.
But it does seem that KJ lacks that all-important long-speed you'd want your corner to possess,
even though he knocked out a sub 4.5 40 at the Combine in Indy.

I think Kubiak is trying to protect his player.

It's like anytime he gets burned or "appears to get burned" the safety was supposed to be over the top.

I don't understand that. Might as well just assign a safety to Kareem because he obviously can't defend those kind of plays....ever...

It was pretty obvious that Manning screwed up. He's making a habit of it already. It started against the Saints in the preseason.

Joseph just mistimed the other one. Although he probably would have been flagged if Boldin didn't catch it anyway.

The problem with the pass rush was that it was almost all scheme. Wade was able to get guys free at the beginning but it was shored up. Guys weren't coming unblocked in the 2nd half. When it mattered, guys couldn't beat blocks 1 on 1. The Texans miss Mario in the nickle with his hand down, when he did most of his damage.

I think Kubiak was being pretty honest. Heck, Manning is his player too. Why throw one under the bus & not the other. Everything he said, lines up with what I've seen. Kj is more physical than Allen. The Ravens has some big physical receivers. If you think Jackson was bad, I can't imagine how Allen would have done.

He might not have given up that play, might have even got an Int.. but he may have also been manhandled all game & gave up a TD. He was going to get picked on, you can't deny that.

Kj was putting together a quietly good game. There was that PI, which I think was bull & probably don't get called most of the time. Then there was that big play to Smith, & I think there was one more, where he was in good coverage, but Flacco threw a good ball away from the defense.

The kids getting better. I don't know that he'll ever live up to his #1 status, but he'll be a fine #2 CB.

It was Manning's job to HELP but that's still Kareem's man and it still happens every single game he plays. If it was once a month (like Joseph finally giving up a big hit) then it probably wouldn't be as big of a deal.

I honestly believe he would make a quality safety. He's a physical player right? And he needs at least 10 yards of cushion so just go ahead and move him back. Quin is the same type, to slow for CB and his physicality shines at S.

Ugh. I'm just really, really tired of seeing it and talking about it.

Every body gives up cushion. That's just part of the game. Watch other teams, Kj doesn't give up cushion any more than anyone else. What you don't want, is when you see the guy already backing up from that cushion before the ball is snapped.

Dunta was bad about that, Allen is as well.

Kj is a second year player, Joseph is a 6-7 year vet ( I think). I think Kj could have played that much better, whether that was his man or not... Kj didn't give up any scores Sunday, so there's an improvement there. Kj hasn't fallen down this season.. that's improvement there.

How many sacks does Brooks Reed have? If we wanted to, we can tear his game apart & talk all day about how he isn't CMIII. He makes mistakes, he gives up yards, but his overall body of work is good for a rookie.

Same thing goes for Kj. The nature of his position, you're going to see passes completed, even the best CBs get burned (Revis got burned twice that I saw last night).. but you have to take it in context of the game. We didn't lose that game because Flacco exposed a weakness in Kj.

The defense gave up 2 touchdowns, 1 on the QB keeper @ the goal line & the other to Ricky Williams up the middle. Other than that, we held the Ravens to 5 field goals. Kj was part of that.

not if they were playing cover 4 or some other similiar zone (which it looked like as kj looked to be heading straight back while smith ran a slanted vertical)

i agree with other who have noticed mannings other busted coverages already. i cant remember the exact plays but i remember cursing him out another play or 2 during the game. il rewatch the game and see. seems like a guy that guesses and loses a bit

loving the j-joe experience so far so he'll get a pass no bother for that mistimed jump, the manning experience... meh

Idexan, in case you haven't read it yet, I covered that play in the "Kareem Jackson's plights" thread.

If he played the coverage that was called (cover 4) and can still break up that pass or "has time" to hit the receiver soon and hard enough to knock the ball loose, he would have the elite speed (on top of the skills that he possesses) to be drafted at least as high as Patrick Peterson.
The Texans wouldn't have been able to draft him.

Torrey Smith had burned the Rams CB (4.31 speed) repeatedly in man coverage and when he (CB Justin King) had safety help over the top.
For Jackson to make that play (saving his safety - Manning, and in the proccess, saving a TD) shows that he has "enough" speed to play the position.

When the Texans drafted him, they knew what kind of speed he has: about the same as Devin McCourty and Brandon Harris.
McCourty was drafted a few picks after KJ; obviously, the Pats did not have concern about his "lack" of speed.
Justin King, who has 4.31 speed, was drafted in the fourth round.
And no, he didn't recover to man-up on any of those several plays against Torrey Smith.
Speed isn't everything!

I hope that, in time, the fans will come to term, realizing that Jackson has good things to offer and can contibute to the success of the team as a solid overall CB.

That is some good narratives, Rey!
Maybe you ought to try fiction; I see "best sellers" on the horizon.
(I guess you can take a joke, right?!?)

I learned that many of the best fiction writers do a lot of research (some of them have a whole team of researchers) before they write their book.
My sincere opinion is that you can help yourself by looking at the play again to see how much validity each of your scenarios has when matching with everything that went on during the play.

In another word, entertain us as to how you come up with each of those scenarios.

LB's could have been in middle zone. Manning could have been Man to man. Quin may have been the cover 1 guy over the top of the play but either didn't do his job correctly or didn't didn't get the right call.

If Kareem is playing cover 4 he should have reacted to the out route and Manning should have been running with the receiver that caught-dropped the ball.

But besides that, I don't claim to know exactly what happened on any given play. I threw a bunch of stuff out there because I realize that there are many different possible reasons for a bad play happening. It doesn't have to be on one or two guys and sometimes you will just never know unless you are in the locker room with those guys.

What I do know though, is that Kareem is often involved in huge plays being given up and just about never makes big plays for the defense.

ONE and only ONE so far in this 2011 season.
And Kareem Jackson saved the TD!

(Yeah, we all know about the TD pass in the end zone against the Saints.)

not disagreeing that someone else likely screwed up and the te was open but c'mon how do you expect the te to score a 60+ yd td on an intermediate crossing route if we're in cover four?

cover 4 means 4 players playing quarters in the deep zone...that was not what we were looking at. The TE was alone and the Mlb was backpeddling but staring straight into the backfield like a spectator. All the while the TE was crossing while the WR was going deep...nobody in the area of the TE. Go watch the play.

Here is the sequence. Cover2 (the cb's were in man, two s over the top) and Manning steps up to take the free running TE that the MLB lets go with nobody to cover him. Jackson lets his man get past him as Manning tries to p/u the TE running free. Manning goes back to help when the pass is thrown but there are too many busts in coverage and its too late. The te is all alone on the fifty yard line....thats why Manning was compromised.

Manning had surgery today, hope to get him back by the end of the season, could be anywhere beyond 4 weeks.

Troy Nolan will start in Manning's absence, and Brandon Harris is going to back him up.

Expects both Andre and James Casey to return to practice this week, AJ worked out today and said everything went well.

No reason to concern about the lack of Demeco on the field, said that the Titans kept them in nickel and dime most of the game. Really impressed with Cushing's play.

Lots of other stuff.
