I am really curious what direction we go. There are some guys some of us thought would go much higher.

If Elton Brown is on the board here and we pass on him, I'm gonna flip... I was flipping when we drafted Morency instead of Blackstock, as he is a true 3-4 OLB, or Chris Canty, a true 3-4 end, or Elton Brown, a massive guard, called by many the best guard in this draft.

But just like yesterday when we took an RB that isn't carrying the ball 100 times this year, we're probably gonna take a backup QB here... possibly AD McPherson right here in a few picks.

I think we go OL. Maybe Elton Brown or we go WR Mathis or maybe LB in the fourth

arm03c

Certainly hope we go Elton Brown here... you wanna talk about grabbing a starter in round 4, he's the guy. At some point we're probably gonna take another corner, another WR, and an O-Lineman... and a QB wouldn't surprise me because Tony Banks is terrible...

Jason Brown at center could work.

I will say we will draft from Elton Brown, Jason Brown,Jerome Mathis, and Roydell Williams.

Jerome Mathis has a ton of potential...I'm not the biggest Kiper fan, but Kiper had Mathis as a late first rounder at one point...I would've liked to see Jason Brown or Ben Wilkerson, but I am definitely pleased with Mathis...

I like Mathis here, I cant belive he fell to the 4th round. We have another return guy that can streatch the field with a 4.31 40.

Mathis immediately becomes the slot receiver. Gaffney and Bradford get to fight for the other flanker spot. Mathis gives us the ability to stretch the field, something Gaffney and Bradford don't. Johnson can be used on slants and such even more now, where he has excelled by being one of the best yard after catch men in the league. This is a tremendous pick for us and probably the best guy available. Chris Canty in round 5 if he's still around...

hopefully Mathis turns out to be the next Laveranues Coles, without the toe injury of course.

Jerome Mathis (from Scouts, inc.)

Strengths: An absolute blazer. Is one of the fastest players in the entire 2005 draft class. Improved as a route runner and return specialist with more experience. Shows the ability to pluck on the run when he concentrates. Is a vertical threat with the initial burst and top-end speed to consistently get over the top of defensive backs in coverage. Is a huge home run threat after the catch, as well as on reverses. Also a big-time threat as a KOR specialist. Has good vision, smooth hips, good COD skills, initial explosiveness and big-league acceleration. Will win most foot races in the open field.

Weaknesses: Has character concerns. Level of competition is a concern. Lacks ideal size and strength. Will have more trouble getting off the LOS in the NFL. Lacks ideal height as a vertical receiver. Needs to improve his route running skills. Rounds off too many of his routes. Needs to learn to shift his weight better when getting in and out of breaks. Does not show a good ability to find soft spots in zone coverage. Focus and concentration is too inconsistent in terms of catching the ball. Is a below average blocker and will never get much better in that facet.

Overall: Mathis won six state track championships in high school. He was a non-qualifier because of academics in 2001. He finished with 24 receptions for 615 yards and three TD's in 2002, whjile also averaging 20.9 yards per kickoff return on 20 attempts. As a junior in 2003 he became a fulltime starter and finished with 40 receptions for 977 yards and nine TD's. He also returned 17 kickoffs for 343 yards and one punt for 42 yards. As a senior in 2004, Mathis finished with 30 receptions for 884 yards and nine TD's. He also returned 25 kickoffs for 888 yards and five TD's as a senior. Mathis ran track throughout his career at Hampton and was a three-time NCAA track All-American in the 200 meters. Mathis is a track star turned football player. He has some character concerns, lacks ideal size and needs some refinement as a route runner. However, he's one of the fastest prospects in this year's class and he improved each of the last three seasons on the gridiron. Mathis may take more time than most Day 1 prospects to develop but his versatility and speed are enticing. Mathis has the potential to develop into a vertical No. 2 or No. 3 receiver in the NFL and he also has a lot of upside as a KOR specialist at the next level, which is why it's not out of the realm of possibility for Mathis to come off the board as high as the second round.

I like the pick and I would try to take Hawthorne if he is still available in the 5th, it is a steal that late in the draft. Some people had him rated in the 1st round not too long ago.

You are completely off base on that statement. I was talking about Jerome Mathis after watching him in the Gridiron Classic well before the combine. I was amazed at what I saw of him in that game, and really wanted him from that point on.

I'm completely guessing, but I think that because of the level of competition Mathis played against wasn't exactly NFL, or Division I, caliber, we'll have to ease him into the rotation...He doesn't have the best hands, but neither did AJ coming into the league...If he works hard at it like AJ did, then we could have a steal on our hands...Like I said earlier, Kiper had this guy pegged to the Eagles at 31 at one time...

On the field, yes we could use some more nasty, mean guys...We've always been able to pride ourselves on the belief that our team will never get into off-field issues...I'm not so sure of that anymore...Oh well, in Cass we trust...

Did anyone else just see that tape on ESPN? Wow, you wanna talk about a speedy dude! All he's gonna do is run deep routes. If he gets one step, he's gone. So you're gonna have to leave a deep safety for him now, finally giving more room for Johnson to run around. Should be a GREAT pick for David Carr, and if this kid isn't gonna start at least in the slot, we're wasting his talent. Also probably going to be the kick returner and possibly punt returner if Capers doesn't want to use Buchanon there.

arm03c
04-24-2005, 12:14 PM
Someone just mentioned the quality of competition... That last dude he burned on tape was Brian McFadden, 2nd rounder of the Pittsburgh Steelers. McFadden can play and was one of the fastest guys on the Noles defense this past year.... and Mathis ate his lunch. We made a steal here.

He did show his stuff at the Gridiron CLassic. Total package type player, KR, WR, can hurt teams on the Reverse, etc. With a legit 4.28 40, that is speed that cannot be ignored. He just seems to glide when he runs, sort of like Deion Sanders did.

BTW, did the Texans trade the #113 to TEN for the #114 plus picks or something. I saw on the ESPN ticker that HOU was up at #113, then it went to MIN, then it went to TEN, then HOU had #114. What's up?? trade?

Jerome Mathis is a nice pick. Can't wait to see who we pick up in the 5th.

It's getting harder and harder to find good pictures of our picks as we progress in the draft. Looks like I'll have my hands full when we get to the 7th.

I'm not sure about what games you have been watching....but Tony Banks is not terrible. You sound like one of those people that worship Dave Ragone (which by the way what has he done???) Well anyway, I think taking another young quaterback for the third year in a row would be a waste of a pick, and Tony has proven himself over the years. :thumbdown

arm03c

Banks I suppose is a suitable enough quarterback. I'm certainly NOT a Dave Ragone fan... in fact I celebrated when we shipped him to Europe. But Banks is old, and considering that he got beat out by Dave Ragone for the backup job... I don't want to see us draft a QB, but we're probably going to at some point.

After hating the first pick. I think we were able to get good value with the third round pick. From what I have heard and read about this pick I'm like this :woot . This guy isn't a small burner he is 6'0" and a buck eighty-five. Also he comes with a few nice stats........ "Mathis elevated his level of play and was named Performer of the Game in the Gridiron Classic Game with 108 yards of total offense. He is a tremendous athlete with 4.4 speed and a world of confidence. In 2004, Mathis led the country in kickoff returns, averaging 35.5 yards a return, bringing back five for scores. "

About the level of competion. Lets remember that Jerry Rice and Steve McNair came from small schools. I think those guys turned out pretty well. He does come with the one thing you can't teach... SPEED!!
