Do people even use paper sacks anymore??

I have seen some stores that still have paper, but it is definitely not what it used to be. The good news for Saints fans who want to rock the throwback look is those in the picture are wearing the paper lawn bags, which are still sold at most places with a lawn center.

I dunno... I grew up a Braves fan AND Saints fan in the 80s. Not much winning, but there's a certain nostalgia remembering those days before the bandwagons got full.

And seeing these throwback uniforms:

http://nbchardballtalk.files.wordpress.com/2010/11/braves-blue-uniforms.jpg?w=320

was pretty sweet, even if it was a nod to the bygone days of Braves suckage.

Indeed it does, although that's part of what makes being a Saints fan so much sweeter these days: remembering where the franchise has come from and seeing where it finally has gotten. I was a child of the eighties so I never really got to experience the really bad years, but I was there when we played a "home" game against the bears in Tiger Stadium... I'm sure Vince remembers that too :vincepalm: ... Point being, we are proud of our history, even if the history isn't proud. Bandwagoners cheered when Hartley's kick went through in OT, the Old schoolers cried.

I'll share the story. Back in 1980 the Saints hit the absolute low point in their history. The team only won one game that season. About half of the way into the year "Buddy D" Diliberto, a well known New Orleans' sportscaster, was so fed up with ownership's lack of commitment to putting talent on the field that he campaigned for a boycott. He quickly discovered that this was not going to happen because of the fan's love of the team, win or lose. Therefore, he began asking fans to show up wearing a paper bag over their heads as a means of protest if they insisted on attending the games. Several fans complied toward the end of the 1980 season and more carried the protest into 1981. Management must have been listening to a point because they let Coach Dick Nolan go and hired Bum Phillips at the beginning of that season.

The wearing of bags was not widespread amongst Saints fans during this protest, but they were the ones that made it into the media. Occasionally bags would appear later, but 1981 was the "year of the bag". While Saints fans are associated with bag wearing, bags began be worn by fans of different team in the NFL and other sports in the coming years.

Most fans today seem to think that the Saints fans were ashamed of their team. That couldn't be further from the truth. The fans loved the Saints so much that they wanted to embarrass management while still being able to see "their" Saints.

By the way, Buddy D once stated that he would wear a dress on Bourbon Street if the Saints ever made it to the Super Bowl. He died before he ever got to pay off that bet. However, former Saints' great QB Bobby Hebert paid the bet for him. The week before the Super Bowl Hebert and thousands of New Orleans men paraded down Bourbon in their wives' and girlfriends' finest fashions. I would have been their myself if I could have made it.

I hope this helps clear up the mystery of the bags.

Word to the wise....Any of you guys making the trip this weekend: Better "cup check" any alleged woman you meet in that Bourbon St. bar before taking her back to the hotel room....also, once you see Tropical Isle (the one of the left side if coming from Canal) it's time to turn around. All you have to do is look in the parking lots and parking garages at the Lake Charles casinos and see all the Texas license plates to prove that point correct.

I get the feeling every time the idea for legalizing casinos in Texas comes up for discussion, there are Louisiana casino owners paying some cash to the Texas politicians to make sure it never happens.

Haha, nice one, but no. Some of these throwbacks are atrocious looking to me. I didn't mind it in the 50th anniversary season, but c'mon, this is just getting old. I want to see the teams in their colors, not some bland colors that have nothing to do with the current franchise. This is football, not a fashion show.

I see more black and gold than I see brown and yellow.

but that's just me...

And you're free to hate on the Saints - it makes no difference to me. But how that turns black to brown and gold to yellow just doesn't make sense to me.

LSU is purple and gold, officially, but to me the unis are yellow.

So this is a much clearer case of yellow claiming gold. And, by comparison, the Saints don't look at that yellow.

Hangover piss yellow isn't yellow. Kind of like an Orca isn't a whale but everybody still calls them that. Anyway I think of the city as kind of a hangover piss yellow and brown kind of drabby, skank town. (no, not talking about the people) :D

Good story by the way Guido.

Thanks, gwallaia. I know the Saints history isn't that hallowed in the realms of the NFL, but it is still special to me having lived it all. From the opening kickoff in team history being run back for a TD by John Gilliam to the Porter pick six off Manning in the Super Bowl. From the Dome Patrol and the first playoff game ever in 1987 to the first playoff win ever in 2000. It's had its highs and plenty of lows, but I wouldn't trade it for anything.

Don't be jealous. Just cuz your team isn't old enough to have throw backs, doesn't mean you should hate on ours! :nolisten:

Speaking of throw backs, you need to throw your azz back to the Aints boards!
Second, you're getting really annoying. Don't come on our board and tell us what to do and how to think/act.:vincepalm: STHUA.

You're going to call my comments moronic and you're here advising men to "cup-check" their "women." Wow, and vagina smack-talk- priceless.:vincepalm:

lol, when you edited that you erased the "first"....so that "second" is hanging out there by itself. Good job champ.

Wow, even more annoying than I thought. If you must go there, you don't need to have a "First", to follow with a "second." Since you get your thrills from being an edit-cop, you only prove that you have no life. STFUA.

I was rooting for the Saints after Katrina and thought y'all had some good teams over the years, particularly some of those Jim Mora teams with the terrific linebackers they had. I think the team will be a serious Super Bowl contender for a few more years, too. Your story was really interesting and not something I ever heard, or read about before. Thanks.

Having said that,

Sunday prediction: 31 Texans - 17 Saints.

Rep your way!

Expertly detailed, Guido. Thank you for sharing the information.

By the way, it has been nice having you two Saints fans on here (you and SaintRusty) because you're engaging in real football talk and pretty much everyone else here is doing likewise with you two. Oh, I need to toss in RazorOye as a good one too, but he feels like a Texans fan because he's here so much! I almost forgot about Razor being a Saints fan. My bad.

Anyways, thanks again Guido.

Because that is the path that we as fans took to where we are now. It helps to remember the past to have greater appreciation of the present and future.

oh i agree, never "forget" the past, but that dont mean i'd wanna talk about our relive it. We as a Franchise have had our Downs, hell almost all 10 years haha but there are certain things we KNOW not to talk about on this board. We need to have a texans Swear jar ;)
