The Atlantic Coast Conference has extended its northern reach, adding Pittsburgh and Syracuse. Now the question becomes, will the league stop there - or keep growing to 16?

The ACC announced Sunday that its council of presidents unanimously voted to accept those two schools, a move that increases its membership to 14 and sends the Big East scrambling - again - to replace two of its cornerstone programs.

"We are constantly evaluating the competitive landscape to ensure the conference's viability for years to come, and this, I believe, has staying power," ACC Commissioner John Swofford said on a conference call.
"First of all, we are very comfortable with this 14," he added. "The only thing I would add to that is that we are not philosophically opposed to 16. But for now we are very pleased with this 14. We think it is just an excellent group."
The announcement caps a turbulent week of reshuffling for the ACC. It likely will lead to another dramatic shift in college athletics and could mark the next step toward the era of 16-team superconferences.

That will help force Notre Dame's hand into joining the Big 10. Hopefully this means a couple of Big 12 schools can get in there as well, like Missouri or Kansas. The SEC won't be poaching any ACC teams after this, so I would expect them to go for some more Big 12 schools and Big East schools.

I wouldn't be so sure that FSU and Clemson won't leave the ACC. The ACC is going heavy basketball. Maybe they caught wind that one of their big football schools wants to leave.

The ACC just voted unanimously to increase its exit fees from 12-14 million to 20 million for any school that leaves. Nobody is going anywhere in that conference.

I sure hope FSU can find a way to leave the ACC. Its a basketball conference now.

Sounds like UConn is about to bail too... I think Big East is officially dissolving.
