View Full Version : John McClain . . . what a piece of work

This guy is something else.

Link (http://www.chron.com/news/article/McClain-When-Bush-came-to-shove-Texans-took-2173291.php)

. . . . . . .

On the Friday afternoon before the draft, I was doing my regular stint on the radio and saying how I still thought the Texans would draft Bush. During a commercial, I received a text from Casserly saying they had just reached a contract agreement with Williams.

When we returned from the commercial, I said something like, "Well, the more I think about it, considering the Texans were terrible on defense and last in points allowed, I think they should take Williams after all. I'm changing my pick. I'm going with Williams over Bush."

Then I remember Rich Lord, one of the radio show's hosts, saying, "Are you kidding me? After all these months of predicting Bush, you're going with Williams? Geez!"

But at least I got the pick right in my first-round prediction in the Chronicle.

:loser And you wonder why people change the channel when you're on the radio.

(And for Chronicle staff that reads this . . . whoever did the photoshop work on Reggie's arms in that pic . . . needs to be fired. That was ridiculous.)

He said the pick was gonna be about 14 guys. LOL. Also said we would regret passing Toby Gerhert. :clown:

BTW, did you notice that Reggie was gonna be the top pick in 2005? F'ing brilliant.

You don't get that he wants to take credit for something he admitted he didn't do? Ok?

As for the photoshop, of course it's photoshopped. Hell, everything is photoshopped these days, but if you're going to do it, do it realistically, not in a way that you take one look at it and go "WTF is that?"

I'm guessing you guys are saying that someone photoshopped a new set of arms onto Reggie but I don't think that's the case. He might be small but he's pretty jacked and he's been like that since coming out of USC. He just has a massive pump going in that pic

It's not like he's trying to hide it..

I don't really care about McClain really one way or the other... I think he says some good things at times, but he's just a meh to me...

I cant stand to listen to the guy breathe while he talks ..... He's got to keep his sidekick Anna Megan around so her (o)(o)'s keep him relevant .... Hell , they are the only thing keeping her relevant - piss poor journalists.

Im not sure the Chron has a sports journalist I do like anymore ..... That publication is worthless .... accept for a coupon or two.

McLain is good for war stories. He's a walking history book, and I actually enjoy that aspect of his media presence. Sort of like Barry Warner, except Warner is capable of some decent football analysis from time to time (just have to hear past his overwhelmingly large ego, though...at least John comes across as somewhat humble).

McLain's football takes suck. He always seems like a front-runner, and much of his commentary sounds like Captain Obvious stuff.

And Anna Megan is good for (o)(o) candy, but it's when she starts talking that I find something/someone else to listen to. Sweet girl, but not the brightest bulb in the lamp when it comes to football insight. Give me LZ or CP any day of the week. JMO

You are right , McClain does know a lot of "History" . I'll give him that .... he has no real sources with this team .... He was locked in with Buck Fud and Co but this team never seems to have taken to him ..... especially this regime.

No biggie, inside job. happens all the time, put yourself in his shoes what would you do, spill the beans?

I'll admit it right here, I was pulling for Vince Young myself & it wasn't that Bush or Williams where not great prospects either, however to those of us who lived through HWMNBN days as the first overall pick in franchise history it was imperative they needed to move on. I know that's not sound draft logic now, but shows the depth of disparity he instilled among'st all Texan fans, media maybe even teammates & coaches?

Last year the defense sucked about equal in proportion so they fired a Bush & brought in a Son of a Bum to run the defense, not to mention his impact on their draft & free agency. Brilliant!!! Looks like they really got this one right, in this regard I believe McClain has been on the mark all along. Maybe the affliction of ineptitude follows people regardless of their work but then when winning culture occurs suddenly everything is less painful & more palatable :user:

You have to wonder if things would have turned out differently for VY had he been taken by the Texans and working with Kubiak rather than going to .... Hilbilly Holler.
He has all the physical tools to be a real good NFL QB .... but his brain got scrambled. (Or was it already scrambled )

It would have been. VY would have had a much better career here, but in the end he wasn't cerebral enough for us. His athletic ability would have made the bootleg game sick. He just wasn't worthy of the top overall pick. Honestly, had Kubiak been our 1st head coach, HWWSNSO(think thats DC's innitials) would have been a stud. Mario was the best choice, Reggie would have been terrible, and VY could have been good here.

The question (which thankfully will never be answered) is if Kubiak did believe he needed a new QB from day one, and convinced the organization to forego the Carr extension, would he have used the first overall pick on VY or might it have been Leinart (or might it still have been Mario with a FA brought in to play QB)?

Pretty happy with the way it turned out though.

I think VY was too immature when he entered the league and would have been unable to avoid the influences of his hometown.

Dude has all the physical gifts a player needs to succeed in the NFL, but his biggest obstacle has always been between his ears. Sitting on the bench in Philly might do him a world of good in that regard.

Kubiak thought HWWNBM could be an NFL QB - He has the physical ability but not the smarts to live up to the potential. He doesnt process information quickly enough to read defenses or go thru progressions which is why we saw so many short dump offs that final season.

It took Kubiak much less than that season to realize HWWNBM wasnt going to be able to run his offensive system but by that time the decision had already been made.

Thats a true story .... without a link so take it for what its worth.

I'm still a little skeptical about Kubiak's role in keeping Carr, mainly due to the reports we read of potential HC candidates being asked by our owner about keeping him.

Kubiak, desiring the position and having the ego that all coaches likely have, probably thought it was worth a short to work with him. And it made his new boss happy, so what the heck.

Might be the reason for the sixth season, if ya' know what I mean.

I agree. Although, I think the HWWNBN project would've ended much sooner if the 'Copter' didn't break a finger (I think it was a finger). If I remember correctly, the hand model guy was yanked a time or two throughout that season.

Ah, the good ole days....:gun:

McLain was only doing what he always does. He doesn't have a good eye for the game so he makes sure he is told what to think, he's told who is doing well in camp, someone tells him how good or bad Mario played last night, someone has to tell him what is important on the football field and what to look for. He has never supported a pick based on his observational skills or his eye for talent, or his knack for reading the assignments of the players over the course of a game. He finds out what he is supposed to make important, and he runs with it.

Kubiak thought HWWNBM could be an NFL QB

I'm not sure he ever really thought that. More likely he was asked the question 'Can you win with David Carr' by Bob during the interview and knew that his hiring was contingent on the answer being 'yes'. So he told McNair what he wanted to hear and then watched Carr answer the question for him.

As far as McClain, the only thing I wish he would have been right on is when he swore up and down the Texans were going to draft Clay Matthews. Besides that, I think the dude is a joke.

I've been checking out the images in Google's engine after typing "reggie bush J. Meric Getty Images", which is the credit for the picture.

It's weird, because lots of his pics of Bush look edited. If this one is edited, it was done by someone other than the Chronicle, because the image goes back to August (http://mobilepictures.sun-sentinel.com/gallery.php?counter=26&slug=sfl-preseason-football-miami-dolphins-tampa-buccaneers-pictures).

This one is credited to the same photographer:

Not sure I get the McCain hate. I can understand being disenchanted with the lack of substance in his coverage, but some of the vitriol is over the top.

He strikes me as a really, really nice guy. And, yes, that's two reallys.

I ran into him at the very first preseason game back in 2002 and he couldn't have been more willing to engage with the average fan (me).

Oh well. Carry on.

I don't get the hate also.
I don't think it's personal. No one here really knows McClain, as far as I know. It's the job he does. Or doesn't do. Just look at this story. He gets information from Casserly that the Texans are taking Mario. Does he report the information? No. He says on the radio that he's changing his mind about who the Texans are going to pick. Like it's his hunch. Later, ESPN breaks the story about the Texans taking Williams over Bush. Did McClain think Casserly was going to only tell him about the Mario pick?

And that's not the only instance of the national media breaking a story regarding the Texans. Whether it's McClain sitting on stories, too busy watching movies, or going out to eat, he and the Chronic do not get the info on the team out to the fans. Read the Boston Globe or just about any other paper from a NFL city, and you'll see just how poor the coverage is here. When I go online to read the Chronic, I'm looking at Lance or Texans Chick's blogs. That's it. And those are mainly opinion pieces. And when I have read McClain's blog, he's generally condescending to the fans who comment there. For me, the disdain for McClain (on a professional, not personal level) is justified.

Ive met McClain on multiple occasions , you are right , he's a nice guy , easy to talk to. He's like me when Im drunk , he'll talk to anyone. (when Im sober .... dont bug me).

That doesnt make him a good journalist.

His sources arent what they were when the Oilers were in town. He had a much better working relationship with that regime. Part of that is McNair playing it close to the vest , he doesnt give out a whole lot of information. Sources make a sports journalist relevant (or not).

He's lost a lot of credablity with so much speculative writing thats posted as fact.

Part of the problem , for me at least may be his employer ..... the Chron is a sorry excuse for toilet paper much less a news paper. They publish more mistakes than a kindergarden class ..... And Houston has the worst sports coverage in the nation among major cities.

1st: He is symptomatic of the very poor media coverage of the team. As passionate fans of the Texans, it is difficult to deal with the lack of information and coverage.

2nd: He is lazy and doesn't take pride in his work.

The McLame hate is because he sucks rocks as a sports reporter/journalist, as is most everyone on the staff at the Comical. I don't think people hate him as a person.

These guys are nothing more than glorified message board posters, except they really don't have an opinion like a MB poster does, they rather throw crap out there to see what sticks or are just trying to stir the pot to generate hits to their web page. That's what journalism has come to these days.

Can anyone explain to me why our punter is in on kickoffs?LINK (http://blog.chron.com/nfl/2011/09/week-2-matchups-texans-vs-dolphins/)Texans’ special teams vs. Dolphins’ special teams
Joe Marciano’s special teams are coming off their best game since 2009. A tremendous performance against the Colts. Danieal Manning showed why he’s a terrific kickoff returner. Jacoby Jones showed he’s got big-play capability with his 79-yard touchdown on a punt return. Coverages were good. Rookie P Brett Hartmann was exceptional on kickoffs. Neil Rackers is a dependable kicker. They need to keep dictating field position. The Dolphins’ return game is in good hands with Davone Bess and Clyde Gates. K James Carpenter is reliable. P Brandon Fields averaged 51.2 (gross) and 41.3 (net) in their loss to New England. Their coverage teams were mediocre against the Patriots.
